Somehow, a user from pdaphonehome named shackrat has attained one of these phones. Apparently he ordered one through his Verizon corporate rep, so they must be available in small numbers right now. I've been in contact with Samsung's PR department, and I was dearly hoping to get a unit for review before it hit the streets, but it looks like that won't happen now. :| I'll keep trying and maybe I'll get my hands on one before everyone else on the planet does... <br /><br />"This is the part where I'm left speachless [sic]. I really don't mean to make anyone drool or anything, but once you get your hands on one I strongly think you'll be impressed too. The phone function works well and there is no lag when manually dialing a number (i.e. Kyocera 7135 with about a 1.5 second lag from hitting a number until it shows on screen). The reception (keep in mind I'm not programmed or activated yet) is on par with my old v60c. Where the i700 really shines is in the voice dialing application; Voice Signal. It does not come pre-installed and will need to installed preferably in main memory for speed reasons. It is worth sacrificing precious main memory (the amount I don't yet know) because it is an app that you will use everyday. You can voice dial ANY contact in your address book simply by tapping the Voice Signal icon (or mapping it to a hardware button) saying "Name Dial" and then the contact name when prompted. The voice recognision [sic] is very quick, with only about a 1.5 second delay between speaking a name and recognision [sic]. If a contact has more than one phone number Voice Signal will ask you which one you wish to call (home, work, mobile, etc.). All in all, it is a very slick and useful application. For those more difficult to pronounce names there is the ability to train the system on a case by case basis. You can also dial by number using voice dial by speaking "Number Dial" at the prompt and speaking the number at a normal speed. You can also launch any installed application with this software but I haven't dug too far into that yet..."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/i700.jpg" />

I was happy when mine came with two batterys a slim and extended one. I can really say that this will take the place of my 128mb spaceneedle :) It is a well designed , solid feeling device. even the cradle has nice features... a cutout so you can remove the SD card without having to remove the device, an extra slot for the other battery to charge.... and the cradle has the devie at about 45 degree angle so it easy read.. nice..... i really like mine :P

Gotcha. Sorry about the hand injury. I tried the demo from Fonix last year and thought it was "OK". I may download the current release and try it again. Thanks!

I like mine too! I think we have the distinction of being some of the first people outside of Verizon Wireless to be lucky enough to get one. Now that I have activated it and spent a few hours using it I can honestly say it is built very well. The audio quality is good when in a private call and the speakerphone is loud enough yet good at reducing background noise enough that it works well in my truck.

Now to install my 256mb SD! :-P

Oh by the way, great site too! I'd be happy to post some of the pictures I took if there's demand.

Its funny but I got the call from my companies Verizon Rep today about the I700. He told me to contact the local stores who were clueless and unhelpful. After a couple calls and a quick fax my I700 was ordered and should arrive Monday if they made the shipping cutoff otherwise Tuesday.

The pricing is simple: $599 w/ 2YR Contract or $629 with a 1YR Contrract (go for the 1YR Contract you won't regret it later).

As for the data plans and voice plans. Yes you can stack your family share plan and a data plan together. Others have had issue with Verizon on this, but it was no hassle on my end. I got Voice Mail, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Call ID, and 3 Way Conference Call to boot.

I took the unlimited data/email plan on the Express Network for $44.99 which is about $10 more than the 5MB plan. So you might as well go for it.

Hope this helps everyone out. It was also nice to see that the official date is May 19th posted on the internet since Verizon CS has no clue to the date and the stores don't know it exists (in some places).

I recently switched from Verizon to ATT because they didn't offer a BT phone. I had my sights set on an unlocked P800, but really didn't have the 500-600 dollars just laying around. So I settled for a Nokia 3650. It's a great phone...Symbian is a decent OS. I just use a BT CF card with my Axim and surf when I want to. Plus I actually use the camera, and the email/IM features on the phone. It's cool to be able to email from my phone or transfer a picture to my ppc without wires. And it only set me back $150.

I'm thinking about ditching my t68i for a Nokia 3650, but tell me is it really worth it :?:

I wonder if this phone is the combination we all (well almost all....some) want in a pda/ phone combo :?:

The 3650 is a phone with some PDA functions. It came down to money for me. The P800 on the other hand, is a PDA that also works as a phone. It all depends on what you want and how much you want to spend...

I have both... the only down fall to the 3650 is that it will only work with a nokia bt headset.. so if you have sony ericsson headsets it wont work... maybe you should hold off for the SE T610.....

As for the "it is a data call ... you have to connect..." isn't it safe to say that the connection process is painless and relatively quick? I use the 1xRTT network with my iPaq 5450 (Sierra Wireless AirCard 555) and it's as simple as pushing one "button" on screen and away we go! You don't enter passwords and the like, so it's not a time consuming process.

Here are some answers to your questions based on my first 24 hours of use.

1. PXA250 @ 300MHz (w/control panel CPU speed control)
2. 64MB
3. Yes, a nice leather case with a plastic cradle for holding the i700 securely.
4. Yes, although some features may be missing. AIM for PocketPC works great.
5. I'm looking into that at the moment.

So far I am still impressed with this toy, er, I mean tool. ;-) Battery life has been good so far, with the standard battery it's a little better than you can get out of an iPAQ 1910 (my previous PPC). I can't wait to try the extended battery!

The major difference with the aircard 555 and the i700 is there is no watcher program running.... like the Thera (Sucky implentation... IMHO) but yes.. if the app is connection aware like IE or Activesync, it will just connect ... no password etc...

I did not see anyone post this question yet. Can the I700 be used as a hand held phone or do you need a earbud?
Also, on the phone scoop web page, their specs said that it included GpsOne in the hardare. Are they correct? GpsOne is for emergency tracking, but I hope it can be used for GPS navigation as well.
One more while I am at it, when SD WiFi cards come out, is it going to be in an awkward location if the antenna sticks out of the side?

Good point, I believe that I have not mentioned that yet. Yes you can use it as a handheld phone, a speakerphone, or with the included ear buds. The leather case that it comes with has 2 small holes, one for the privacy speaker and one for the microphone. The speakerphone speaker is on the back of the unit while the privacy speaker and mic are on the front. With the phone in the case it is a bit bulky (I'm used to a v60) to hold as a phone but the audio quality is very good.

It's also worth noting that the unit has an external antenna connection which is helpful if you desire to use a mobile antenna.

I have been on the phone today with more Verizon reps than I can count, and try as they may, they cannot find anywhere in their system that this phone as available!

Talked to a Corporate Account rep, and he said the system shows the accessories available, but not the phone itself!

They are dumbfounded when I tell them that people already have the phone. They don't understand how.

Neither do I!

I called Verizon, and the guy on the phone told me the same thing. His computer showed accessories for the I-700 but nothing at all as for the ppc phone itself.

He said the official release date was May 19th, and to check back on that day.

I just ordered one from Verizon, here's what I did:

-Call the Verizon Inside Sales Department - (888) 466 4646
-BS your way through the menus or just hit 0 until you get to a representative. This takes a while, I waited 10 minutes or so before a representative picked up.
-Tell them you want to buy a Samsung I700
-It's $599 w/ 2yr. contract, $629 w/ 1 yr. contract, and $729 w/o contract

I talked to two representatives and both of them had no trouble locating the phone.
I actually ordered the phone from 'Ryan'
Ryan explained to me what was going on. He said the order was a little complicated because they had to order the phones directly from Samsung before shipping to us. He said that the order required coordination from 3 seperate departments. Also interesting was that he reserved a serial number for me because he said the phones were in short supply and reserving the serial number guaranteed me a phone. I'm supposed to be getting the phone on Thursday, so I have my fingers crossed.

It's amazing how many different answers you can get when calling the same number!
I have tried what Berylium said (three different times now), and the common answer is "No, we don't have that, we cannot get it right now, and don't know how people are getting it!"

It's not like I'm in that big of a rush to get the i700 (okay - so I am excited! ), but it still cracks me up as to how inconsistent the message delivered can be!

Welcome to the big ol' world of misinformation, corporate leaks, inside connections and all that fun stuff! Mix it together, bake at 350 and you get confusion cake!

05-28-2003, 08:16 PM
The i700 comes with a wireless sync CD. The way it works is this. You install the software on your home/office computer and it runs constantly in the background. You also install the software on your i700. You then subscribe to one of Verizon's new $45/month all-you-can-eat internet access plans that are designed for the wireless sync option. The software enables you to do wireless syncs (duh) but it does so through a wireless vpn. Now, I haven't taken the time to get mine up and running yet since it needs some special configuration because I'm behind a router/firewall, but everything I've read points to the ability to run Terminal Services and other services through this VPN connection.
