View Full Version : 5455 slow ?

While I love my 1910 I have sorely missed connecting to my wireless home network. Decided to put a 5455 through it's paces at Best Buy (they know me and always unlock them for testing). Folks I have to tell ya that it seemed slow. Certainly it was slower then my 1910 at just about everything. Thinking that perhaps the slowdown was due to the bio-reader and/or the wi-fi turned on, I made sure all were turned off. Still slow. Soft reset. Still slow. Since it had some garbage files on it and missing images on PIE I talked them into doing a hard reset. Even after that it was still noticeably slower then my 1910. What the heck is up with this series?

Apparently, there were some speed issues with the DM_k.exe program in Startup; from what I've heard, the ROM update mostly resolves these.

Would you happen to know what file/service is being started with this executable? If I move it out of Startup will the unit still function properly?

The file is in the startup folder. Removing it is not longer necesary. HP released a ROM update that corrects this problem, among other things.

The file controls the Expansion Pack Applet. You can remove it from Startup and only activate it if you plan on connecting an Expansion Pack. The new ROM Update is supposed to take care of this issue, but that may not be accessible to you using the Best Buy demo model.

Or you could simply just try this by removing the dm_k.exe file More Infohttp://www.pocketpclounge.com/viewtopic.php?t=6 or Overclocking the processor with some aftermarket software. More info here http://www.pocketpclounge.com/viewtopic.php?t=8. Peace

Ummm I shouldn't have to OC a 400mhz processor to be faster then a 200mhz processor  I will try moving the exe to a different folder and see what happens. As this is at Best Buy I can't do too much.

Removing "that" file works wonders. Since I don't need the CF sleeve anymore because I bought a 512 SD card it didn't make any difference when I removed it.

But, I finally broke down and did the ROM upgrade and it works even better. Just don't replace the Windows files when you reinstall your older 3rd party programs! I did and had to reinstall the ROM update a second time.

Moving that file did help the performance, but it still seems slighty slower then my 1910. Think I'll wait to grab a unit that uses the more efficient XScale processor with the wider memory bus.
