Check out how compact it is... and it has a removable dialpad!<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/parekh/news/20030421-Legend-PPCPE.jpg" /><br /><br />According to the above link from Soroban Geeks (:google: translation from French to English <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fakiba.sorobangeeks.com%2Fnews_2307.html&langpair=fr%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools">here</a>), it will have 64MB of RAM, 32MB of ROM, and a 3.5" screen. As to what standard it will have, it's not clear; since China has both CDMA and GSM standards, it's possible that there will be models for each. Of course, we're probably not likely to see it here in the US, but I've already <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6715">ranted on that</a>. ;)

NICE!
Me Likey.
Is there a D-Pad hidden anywhere?
:?:

Sorry, just saw the site. There isn't. It would seem fairly little additional size to add one similar to the Ipaq 5xxx series..... (No bie security, granted).

Look at the second picture on the website -- I don't think so -- although it looks like it has a jog-dial on the left side of the phone.

Ahh, the virtual keypad...
...arguably one of SonyEricsson's most innovative features on the P800.
Would it be very hard for a third-party manufacturer to make one for an existing Pocket PC Phone? This is a great way to use a PPCPE like a regular phone without getting the fingerprints on the screen.
It would be a neat feature for the virtual keypad to also act as a full-sized screen protector when not in use as well.

Possibly the scroll wheel is similar to one of the more advanced Sony versions which can move forward, back and in as well as scroll... Here's hoping.

As regards the size. If they can keep control over the thickness this would be a VERY nice device.

Obviously it would also need Bluetooth, be based on PocketPC 2003 Phone edition, and run a 400MHz XScale 255 with full speed bus...

Funny how no one has commented on the lack of *any* (far as I can see) hard buttons for apps. The XDA got creamed by many folks for having *only 2* hard app buttons (and some interesting software was developed as a workaround as a result).

Now THAT'S what I'm looking for!!! If it has Bluetooth and an SD Slot, I'm sold.

I agree, I would definately prefer a smaller device with the LCD covering the maximum percentage of the front of the device and a well designed scroll wheel to a d-pad.

From power down moving the scroll wheel (a resonable distance) should start up the device and display a configurable application list (Clie style) on the screen...

The neonode (http://www.neonode.com/) uses a simpler touchscreen for gestures, which would be a very nice addition to PocketPC 2003...

WOW 8O

Excellent idea from SE P800 Keypad, I would love to try it out... I hope it comes with built in BT!

From googling around I came across this site

http://big5.xinhuanet.com/gate/big5/news.xinhuanet.com/it/2003-04/18/content_838779.htm

No idea what the chinese says. Babelfish translation (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr?tt=url&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbig5.xinhuanet.com%2Fgate%2Fbig5%2Fnews.xinhuanet.com%2Fit%2F2003-04%2F18%2Fcontent_838779.htm&lp=zh_en) just talks about concubines and prostitutes and heavenly stems

What I can make out though is that it has SD, but does not seem to have BT. Also does not say anything about it being SDIO or not :( Also its Pocketpc2002, but I suppose this is upgradable.

This may not be THE Phone we have all been waiting for, but its getting close....

According to the article, the website price (MSRP?) for this device is $7000 RMB which is ~$850 USD.

Oh, yes it does have a SD slot (not known if it is SDIO) and no, it does not have BT (or at least there is no mention of one).

Look at the second picture on the website -- I don't think so -- although it looks like it has a jog-dial on the left side of the phone.

The photos didn't show the back of the dialing pad, though. Wouldn't it be cool to have the directional pad and application buttons on the back of the removable dialing pad? It wouldn't be good for gaming, but it should be fine for casual use.

I tried this device out at Cebit Germany last month, but it had run out of power.

The feel is very nice, but the lid is NOT removeable, the dials are not "push through" like on the Sony Erichson device mentioned.

The size is great and fits well in your pocket and the screen is reasonably well protected.

The representative had TWO devices with him that had a built in phone. The problem, he told me, was that the chinese do not like antennas, so they made a device without one, that ironically was exactly as much taller as the antenna is long.
I personnally like the antenna because it makes getting out the stylus easier.
I have some pictures I took of both devices and I will upload them tomorrow if I get the time.

From what I see here (http://big5.xinhuanet.com/gate/big5/news.xinhuanet.com/it/2003-04/18/content_838779.htm), the lid IS removable. One can clearly see on the left image the device without the lid and a different hinge cover. Probably there's a switch or something to move to release that lid.

Smart concept. Bad design. I didn’t like the color, the buttons, how the leather case can fit?, maybe it looks old fashion... Maybe I’m asking for too much! :D

Gorgeous

Pop the antenae off and sell it as a standard PPC. It looks like it would be shorter than a 1910. That is nice. The whole thing looks nice. Hope it makes it to the US and soon.

See this is why I'm not a fan of the smartphone. Something like this gives you the functionality of the Pocket PC while still being relatively small. The question remains where can I sell my left kidney to get the money to get one of these suckers.

i agree, the "smartphone" is just a cellphone with an operating system from MS.

but this thing is amazing.

i would buy take up a loan to buy it this instant if it had bluetooth. i really wonder, why it is so hard to implement bluetooth into devices such as this one.

anyone know if this thing will reach us in europe anytime soon?

I think it's more shortsightedness than anything. And it's very frustrating for me too. :?
