View Full Version : How Often Do You Have Your Pocket PC With You?

Fresh off the shocking <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=99860#99860">news</a> that Jason doesn't carry his Pocket PC around the house all day long, I thought it would be cool to ask everyone the same basic question. Poll time!<br /><br />As for me, I tend to float between the not at home/not asleep options, but generally I'm closer to the latter. On weekdays I usually put it in my pocket while dressing, and there it stays. If I sleep in late on weekends, then it might sit on my desk for a while.<br /><br /><i>(BTW: if you don't see the Vote button, use the little scrollbar to the right of the poll options - it should be under the last option. Sorry for the inconvenience. As always, if you want to just view the results hit the Discuss link.)</i>

When I'm at home, it sits in the cradle.

When I'm not at home, it sits in my front pants pocket.

It is next to me at home.......... reminding me to leave........
It is in my pocket away from home....... reminding me of everything......
I have become a little dependent I think......

My Pocket PC is wherever I am... :D

Or maybe I am wherever my Pocket PC is! :worried:

levitating a PPC:

tied up buttered side toast on the back of the unit, and a kitten on the front side. The natural force should balance each other and cause everything including the PPC to levitate.

Oh yeah?! I put mine in a zip lock baggie and take it into the shower with me! Beat that!

:) just kidding.. that's the only place I don't take it. Taking it into the bathroom is okay though 'cause you still need that Nevo software to change the channel on the TV.

I really did take mine into the tub with me once. Very relaxing.

If there was a way to plug it into me I would.

My wife maintains my calender and tasks on it. I hear it has contacts or something also. How boring.

For now it has its own backpack (http://mysite.verizon.net/res02afy/ipaq_crap.jpg) which is always with me. When not in the backpack, it is in my hand or in the pocket of my robe. The stylus (http://mysite.verizon.net/res02afy/stylus.jpg) always hangs around my neck. It sits with me at the dinner table. My kids don't seem to mind... they usually ask to do something with it like watch cartoons in WMP (from the DirecTV streaming from my main PC which I can change channels with using PocketIE and a serial control utility (http://www.pcmx.net/dtvcon/) running on the PC), or color on it using KidColor (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=4047&associateid=9), or play snails (http://www.snailsgame.com/) against me using the other iPAQ. I'm usuaully on AIM with it, and checking my favorites on TV Browser (http://www.pimcity.com/ptvbrowser/overview.htm) and listening to streaming MP3s on GSPlayer (http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA032810/gsp.htm) and controlling the winamp shoutcast with IRemote (http://mcmajeres.com/).

When the robots come, I will be on their side.

I wouldn't dare get my iPAQ near water (without an Otterbox (http://www.armorbyotter.com/index2.cfm)!), but it's with me everywhere else!

My wife thinks I'm nuts for having my Pocket PC at the bedside, but think about it - when do people have the most thoughts and ideas? When they are lying in bed! (I know, some people think a lot on the pot, but that's a little personal!)

What amazes me is seeing co-workers who will leave their device cradled at their desk at times when I personally think they should have it with them (i.e. lunch meeting, etc). OR, when out of town with co-workers, they will leave it in their hotel room when we are out for dinner or some other function!
I don't get it! It's a pocket device (or close to it!). What's the purpose of having one if you don't have it with you whenever possible?!!!!

That's my analytical excuse!!!

Ummm, Actually I carry two Pocket PCs with me at all times - save the shower. With me in my office right now I have two Dells, Two Jornadas, a 568 and a 567 and an iPAQ 3650. At home I have a Jornada 548 and an old Palmx @migo. Oh yes, I also have ten floating (well flying) around Iraq somewhere.

Originally Microsoft wanted to name the Pocket PC the American Express Card - but that name was alerady taken

How about a thunderstorm? 8O A thunderstorm+iPAQ+Rugged Case+an idiot to do it (AKA: Me)= The scariest thing I have ever done. Yet I am still alive which is what matters. I am serius, I would consider having my device implanted to my left arm but then it would get awkard with 2 player games.

Hey, thanks for linking this! I've been looking for a basic drawing program for my Pocket PC but didn't want to shell out any more money for software. This fits the bill nicely.

With those requirements you might also download PowerToys 3.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/handheldpc/downloads/pluspack/pluspack.asp) for HPC and tell it just to install the Paint program. It won't install it directly to your PPC, but it will place the .cab file in your Programs/Microsoft ActiveSync folder. Copy that to your PPC and run it and it will install a MS Paint like program. It doesn't quite fit right so you have to use the menus more than the buttons, but it works. I like using it for simple stuff. The KidColor app is more to let the kids play with the iPAQ without letting them reconfigure it unexpectedly.

Well, it's 10 now, counting my vote. If I need to go really light, my phone can do contacts/calendar/to do/e-mail/picture taking. If I need features, I grab my Tablet PC. The various PDAs just fall in between the cracks at this point as either too big or feature poor. 8O

If it weren't for my Pocket PC, I would have absolutely NO idea of where I'm supposed to be and when I'm supposed to be there (even though there never seems to be a shortage of people telling me where to go). That's why even a small glitch in Outlook synching can throw me into a tailspin.

Apparently won't work on the 5455... received the following error:
Setup does not recognize the HPC CPU type, or the HPC Explorer has not been run yet.

Wow. I would think that a Pocket PC would be the PERFECT middle ground for you. Besides, where did you find a case large enough to clip that Tablet PC to your belt?

Hey! I thought the E-Vest had a slot for tablets, too...in the back or something.

"Tonight on Jenny Jones - Men Who Have Drastic Surgery to Bond With Their Pocket PCs..."

I'm with Brad - without my Pocket PCs I would never know what I'm supposed to be doing, where I'm supposed to be going, who I am, what my wife's name is, what day it is, who the Prime Minister/US President is (consulting the screen I see that the answers are: doing the washing, the kitchen, ermm... pass, Mrs Purvis, today, Mrs Thatcher and Jimmy Carter - see? - without my Pocket PCs I wouldn't know ANY of that...).

That's just the thing though. I don't need middle ground. Either I need PIM functions and basic e-mail, which the phone can handle, or I want everything.

And yuck, belt clips! I can't bring myself to wear a phone on my belt, let alone anything bigger. Totally ruins the sleek clothing lines.

My bad. I linked the wrong version. That one was for Windows CE 1.0 . Try the 3.0 one (http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/handheldpc/downloads/pluspack/pluspack.asp)...

I have to agree with this. I had a difficult time convincing my boss to buy me a PPC last year. Once convinced, he bought one for himself. Last week he complained to me that his PPC wasn't working. I went to his office, blew the dust off his Jornada 568, and found that he had somehow disconnected the power to his cradle and the backup battery had run down. At least he had a nice, clean device.

I really wish he had saved the $ he spent on his Jornada and given it to me for software/accessories. :?

Cheers.

Being that mine is a phone as well (WooHoo T-Mobile); it's on me at all times! I also use it extensively at the hospital and to be honest I don't know what I'd do without it. I don't have to worry about two devices going off at once and I always know where my phone is. With my Vaja case I feel that I do have the best Pocket PC on the market today; albeit the lacks it does contain.

Have to agree. Maybe someone should demote Jason's status from 'Site Admin' down to 'PPC DemiGod' :D He's on vacation, I'm sure he wouldn't notice...I mean I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

Levitating my Pocket PC is easy:

I toss it in the air. At the precise moment when the force of gravity overcomes the original acceleration I provided in my toss - the Pocket PC is levitating (though for the very briefest quantum of time. :| )

As for the vote: I couldn't pick one. I carry my Pocket PC almost all the time - except for social situations. I figure that on a first date it's never a good idea to expose one's gadgets. :shocked!: (Doesn't that normally wait until the third date? :way to go: )

I still can't get paint to install. I have a 5455. It says it will install when the right device is connected.

I have tried to copy the file and that didn't work either.

Any suggestions?
