Is PXA255 really all that ?

Is increasing the speed of memory bus from 100 mhz to 200 mhz justifies the price difference :?:

what price difference? :?:

Intel is simply replacing the PXA250 with the PXA255, so there should be no price difference. :D

price difference between .. say, e750 and e740 ?

Read the stupid Intel Press Conference people.. they said no price difference..

Quit your "concurring"

Most of that difference would be the transflective screen, the extra ROM space (or I think it was ROM...), and just the fact that it's a new Pocket PC as opposed to one several months old.

there is a difference

memory bus has been doubled... voltage lowered.. resulting in faster processors with less battery consumption

according to the PocketTV team testament.. over at brighthand forums :

"With a PXA255 properly configured at 332 MHz, we observed performances higher than what we get with a PXA250 overclocked at 472 MHz, with PocketTV used as a benchmark (i.e. a lot of CPU calculations and read/write memory accesses).

In other words, if manufacturers configure the new processor correctly, the new devices that will be using 300 MHz PXA255 should be about 20% faster than the current 400 MHz Xscale devices, with a better battery time.

This means that high quality fullscreen 320x240 video can be played at 24 fps together with high quality stereo audio."

Can you replace the processor, so that a PXA255 can be put in an older PXA250 device?

Supposedly Dell has already started putting them in their Axim X5. Can anyone confirm this? I think it would be kind of strange because won't everyone trade in their "defective" Axims to get the new processor?

In addition, Pocket PC Techs is supposed to be determining whether they can upgrade the processor for you.....at a price.

Thats cool, does anyone know anything about the new dell's (axim X7??)
Coz if thats got a 255 and its thinner that the X5, with the dell prices I think i'll have to have one :D

I've heard that it's not possible to replace the PXA250 with the PXA255 in models that were manufactured with the old processor due to encryption or something, but I can't find where I read it (I think it was on Thoughts, but I've searched without success)

Technically, you could replace the cpu if you wanted to physically remove the old chip and surface mount solider the new cpu in. Not an easy process. However, if PocketPC Techs does do an upgrade for a reasonable price, I will first wait out to see what PPC 2k3 and the real performace of the chips end up being. However, at the Dell prices it may be cheaper to get something like an X7 than to do an upgrade.

New Dell Axims now ship with the 255

So how do you know they are shipping with the 255s and when did that start? I just received my Axim last week and it says it has the 250!

Just looked at the website and nothing is displayed there. I can't call Dell due to me being overseas, and am really curious about this...

And back to the original question... is there really a difference...? And what is all this talk about bus speed? Anyone know where we can find that information out?

:?:  :?:

I also would love to know if that AXIM X7 rumor is true.

Wish list for X7:
3.8" screen (or 4"), bigger battery capacity, thinner form factor, 64 megs of RAM, 64 megs of NAND flash memory, GPRS card inside

Hmm .. Christmas came early this year.

It was in a press release about two weeks ago.

Damn.
I should have submitted it.
Im suscribed to lots of press offices(im a videogame journalist), things like Virtual press office and stuff wich send me hunderds of press releases wich I skim over to see if annything that particalurly intrests me is included.
I assumed that news would be posted here because Axim news generaly reaches this site quickly.
If I remember correctly it was a press release about the px255 chip with a list of companies who already started including it in shipping products.

I'm part of a team developing a fairly heavy duty embedded VC++ application, and we have noticed about a 25% performance improvement with the 255 over the 250. The 255 is what we expected the 250 SHOULD have been in the first place.

This is just a rant, but the 250 was the biggest hoax ever put out by Intel. My company waited for the XScale to come out, so we'd get a faster device than we could with the StrongArm processor inside. It turned out that our app ran only 5% faster with the 250, than it did on our StrongArm device. We later found out that the 250 had a cache problem, so the cache had to be (permanently) disabled! I suspect/know that the performance boost we got with the 255, was because they finally fixed the cache. Yeah the bus speed helped too, but I bet the cache helped more.

Remember how disappointed people were when the XScale first came out, and it was barely beating the performance of the StrongArm? Well I think Intel expected alot better performance, but they had that cache problem, which they covered up, and fed everyone a line of bull about why the new chip wasn't any faster...

Until you upgrade the ROM, the new Axims do not actually SAY that they have the PXA255s. If you got any time in the past month it should have it. It is reffered to as PXA250 from the control panel, and if you go to My>Documents>Sysinfo>sysinfo.txt it says PXA250 C1

The PXA250 C1 is the same thing as PXA255. When you upgrade your ROM from Dell's site it renames it to the official name.

Among the new processor, the Toshiba e750 also fixes a number of bugs that e740 users were plagued with. Wait a while until the prices go down, as it is definitely a solid Pocket PC.
