Does anyone know if it is possible to run active sync over an AdHoc connection?

I have a Sony laptop with built in 802.11b, and a 5455. I have successfully established an AdHoc (peer-to-peer) connection between the two units ... but I am having some trouble getting active sync to see the machine on the other end. Before I go further trying to make it work I was wondering if it was even possible.

Thanks
Drew

Yes, it's possible. I didn't have to do anything special to get ActiveSync to work. Once the ad-hoc connection was in place, everything was fine.

One word of note though, just because you have a signal between the two machines with a network icon showing the connection as active, DOESN'T necessarily mean you have a successfully functioning ad-hoc connection (I know it sounds strange).

Quick question before I go on: have you been able to map your laptop drives onto your PPC? If not, try to do so and let me know.

when I am setting up the adhoc connection what do I choose for the IP setting? first time around I left it at DHCP, second time around I just picked a static address to use. What should it be set to?

For ad-hoc, I have mine set at DHCP. Hardcoding the IP settings doesn't work for me. I also recommend you disable any WEP encryption you have running initially (this removes another variable of "what could go wrong"). Don't mess with encryption until you have a confirmed ad-hoc connection.

Another note, peer-to-peer networking is always a pain in that both machines need to be recycled to first establish the connection and once the connection has been established, you can't allow the connection to break or else you'll need to recycle both again. By breakage, I mean anything that can even momentarily break the signal (e.g. you turn off / reset your PPC, your two devices wander out of range of eachother, your laptop freezes, you reboot your laptop, etc.).

If you start fiddling with settings that require you to take out your WiFi and put it back in, just recycle both machines... you'll be doing this often until you can finally establish a confirmed connection. For me, the best way to confirm a connection is to try to map to a PC drive from your PPC (again, too many variables with ActiveSync... confirm your connection first).

Finally, I have never been able to surf the Internet using ad-hoc networking... only file-sharing and ActiveSync.

Oh, and on my configuration manager settings, I have my settings set to INTERNET, INTERNET, WORK. I keep it there at all times for both my ad-hoc and my regular WiFi setup.

Let me know if you don't know how to share & map your laptop drives (may not be obvious if you've never done networking before).
