View Full Version : What Apps do you use most on your PPC?

I think Ed's page that shows the different apps he has on his Ipaq is really interesting, especially for someone like me just getting started with PPC. (My Axim is on the Fedex truck and should be here anytime now!)

What are the apps that everyone uses on a daily basis?

I know that I'm going to install Pocket Informant and @mail (already have the trial versions ready to go). Also Repligo so I can carry a lot of PDF and other files that I need for work. Textmaker seems to be the only wordprocessor that is really compatible with MS Word.

Please post what are your favorite and most useful programs.

I'll be curious to see what other people have to say, but here's the stuff I use daily on mine:

PockeStreets
Magic Button
Palm Reader
Microsoft Money
StopTime
cerdisp (Remote display on my PC)
Apps for my wireless (vxUtil, ceipconfig & winc)

Then there is always a game or two, but they are low priority for me.

Wow, you guys have a lot of stuff.

So far, after charging my Axim, I have installed the trials of:

PI4
@mail
Repligo
Textmaker

So far everything is going really well, Active Sync was able to move all my Outlook folders into @mail and my 2,500 Outlook contacts are happily living in PI4. I've also converted some multipage PDF files into Repligo.

I'm tempted to download a bunch more applications, but I suppose I should learn how to use some of these first ones.

I appreciate your responses. Over the next week or show I'm going to check out the different programs you are all using.

I've just got my 3970 back after a power problem was fixed. They'd warned me to do a backup first (duh!), but they've upgraded the ROM - so I need to do a fresh install. It was interesting what apps made the cut for reinstallation.

Well I see a difference between apps and utilities that area always on (like WisBar) or assist in your usage (such as FITALY)...

I have a LOT of utilities that I rely upon and only a small handful of applications. Here's the list for my PPC...

Utilities:
-Magic Button (the BEST task switcher bar none! free!)
-UpTime (today screen plug-in... also free... tells you how much you've used your PPC since last charge)
-Launcher (today screen plug-in... also free... launch any program from Today screen)
-CityTime (today screen plug-in... tells me time in 4 time zones...)
-GPRS Monitor (taskbar and today screen plug-in... gives you summary of GPRS usage... plus quick access to power and brightness features)
-Resco File Explorer (the best file explorer available)
-PowerAndReset Tools (two quick shortcuts to either turn off or restart the PPC... save wear and tear on your hardware buttons)
-FITALY (screen input... undoubtedly the fastest method of input without resorting to external keyboard...)
-JS KeyXTension (screen input... regular keyboard layout except that each key can be remapped to a different value... I use this to input Thai characters)
-NiceStart (if you use the PPC password functionality, this will provide "skinnability" onto that screen)

Programs:
-ListPro (the single most important application that I have)
-PocketMVP (the most important entertainment application that I have... play DivX videos and OGG audio files)
-AgendaFusion (PIM tool... I switch between AgendaFusion and PocketInformant on seemingly a monthly basis)
-FlexWallet (keep all your critical personal data secure)
-HPC Notes (if you maintain notes in Outlook, this is a must)
-Repligo (essential if you want to instantly convert documents into your PPC)

In terms of built-in apps, I use Excel quite frequently to assist in my language studies.

OK, so here's what I have so far:

Pocket Informant - This is great, especially after using address book on the Palm for years.

@mail - Also first class. I haven't got to set it up with my work network yet, but I sync it with Outlook on my office PC and I can take half my life with me.

Repligo - I have a lot of PDF files, price lists etc, this app is great for viewing them on the go.

TextMaker - Have not really used this so far, just round tripped a few Word documents to see if the claims are true. So far so good!

Battery Bar - Love this

Journal Bar - Love this too. Had a problem if I put the Axim in it's cradle with 802.11b card in place. Couldn't get web pages to open via the wireless afterwards. Figuared out it's better to remove the card before placing the Ax in cradle so as not to confuse it.

Monopoly + Scrabble. I'll only keep one of these, I don't want to pay $30.00 for each. They are both good, although I might be sick of both of them before I've used up the trial games.

I also found some cool themes, a patriotic one, a Stonehenge one and an erotic one (sorry ladies).

I've also ordered, not yet arrived, 256 MB SD card (from Dell) and screen protectors (from PPC Techs).

Once I get the SD card I'll start getting into some music. Then when I've paid the credit card bills from all the other stuff, I want to get a 1meg CF card for movies.

My first impressions of the Axim are that it is bloody great!!! I can't believe I didn't get one months ago.

You know Ed, when I bought the Axim I expected it would be a bit better than my old Vx with a nice color screen. Wow was I wrong, I'm blown away by the things I can do with this. The fact that the Axim is a super value (and getting better still) is a bonus.

It was all the nice folks here who inspired me to make the change to PPC. Thanks Guys!!

I'm surprised nobody's listed Crypt Quest. I think it's awesome. Also rarely listed but incredibly handy is the Journal Bar. To be able to keep up to date with current news, sports, stock market, weather, and to to be able to find out local movie times is incredible. I no longer use Avantgo because of it.

The apps that I use most/make having a PPC worthwhile in and of themselves.

Pocket Informant 4 - a better PIM than desktop Outlook
TextMaker - used now MORE than desktop Word - somehow I just find it easier and more flexible!
Calligrapher - I reckon I get about 98% accuracy currently - my writing is appalling (I'm dyspraxic) - but Calligrapher copes brilliantly with and renders my squiggly mess readable (when a keyboard is needed - Fitaly everytime!)
Conversions in Hand - buying from Handango, news stories on Pocket PC sites etc. means currency conversion. I refer to this program several times a week to do pounds to Kg, feet to metres etc.
DEXPlor! - the perfect file explorer/registry editor/zip program - Resco isn't fit to tie the shoelaces of this brilliant, fast and capable program
Laridian BibleReader - I haven't felt the need to open a paper Bible in months (adding the CEV translation would make it perfect) - never again will I need to spend hours hunting for the verse where someone is described as a donkeys gonads
TomTom Navigator - used almost daily - I have the geographical comprehension of a lobotomised pigeon - so TomTom finds everywhere for me...
Thunderhawk - real internet browsing in bed without the weight of the laptop!
Tube London - never enter the capitol without it!
Spb GPRS Monitor - keeps me in budget out and about
PocketMVP - I was scathing about PocketDivX in the past (buggy and irritating) - but in its latest incarnation it is, quite frankly, brilliant!
Pocket Hack Master - I resisted for ages - but it makes such a difference!

There are other programs I have installed that I should use or intend to use (e.g. FlexWallet) but don't seem to get round to; and programs that are guilty pleasures (Pocket Pop, Age of Empires, Monopoly) - but the above are programs I could never do without, the pinnacles of practical Pocket PC perfection... :)

Ed, Jason, marlof - someone - we need a poll (OK - we don't NEED it, but I'm curious) - How many third party progs do you have installed? <10; 11-20; 21-30; 31-40; 41-50; 51-60; 61-70; 70+...

And to think that I was under the impression that there were not many software titles available for PPC.

It's stunning the amount of stuff you guys have accumulated.

Also rarely listed but incredibly handy is the Journal Bar. To be able to keep up to date with current news, sports, stock market, weather, and to to be able to find out local movie times is incredible. I no longer use Avantgo because of it.

I really like Journal Bar as well. Now that I got so I can update it both through my desktop and from my WiFi card, it's working really well. It's great to get updates on both US and UK news and sports. I think the low graphics version of bbc.com is a great news site to use with PIE.

One thing I need to do is find out how to change the PPC news to come from PPCT rather than Brighthand. Because Brighthand isn't updated very often I've been looking at the same news about the Silver Slider and the V37 for nearly three days now!

just a small tip

if you have your appz stored in a directory with the latest versions on your desktop PC as i do, just use this DOS command "dir /ad /b /s >list.txt" to list em up quikly so you dont have to type em

This will create a file called list.txt with all the sub directories of the folder you are in.

Monopoly + Scrabble. I'll only keep one of these, I don't want to pay $30.00 for each. They are both good, although I might be sick of both of them before I've used up the trial games.

If you buy Scrabble you get a $10 discount on Monopoly. I went ahead and got both and I'm glad I did. They're great for playing alone or playing against a friend. I was out for coffee with a friend the other night and it was great to be able to just whip out the Pocket PC and play a game of Scrabble.

I would be completely lost without HanDBase from DDH Software**.

I use it for:
finances
contact management
expenses
area codes
cities/states
time zones
ebook list
movies list
sermon notes
borrowed/lent items
passwords
e-wallet
contract timer
task list
shopping list
home inventory list
..and a bunch of lists of miscellaneous things.

Hey, why bother buying a bunch of commercial software if I can do it with HanDBase!!

Other than that I use:
GSPlayer (great FREE MP3 & OGG player)
OliveTree Bible reader
Palm Reader
Resco pic viewer
Resco file explorer
Pocket Divx
Wis Bar

**Full disclosure: I do contract work for DDH Software. Still... :D

Lets do this again but everyone only gets to list 3...:)

Why?

Most used:

Streamliner
iSilo
MS Reader
Cubicle Chaos/Solitaire.

I'm actually looking for a replacement to Streamliner...its been acting a bit buggy and the support is not good.

Cubicle Chaos (which is now available for free from MS's Pocket PC download site) is fast becoming a serious addiction.

Nothing startling, but here's what I use so far:
[snip]
Fonix iSpeak

How do you like Fonix iSpeak??

Sorry for the delay, out of touch. I like iSpeak. I have a longish commute twice a day, and I use it to read my email. By connecting the headphone jack to the aux input on my car stereo I can get through quite a bit and it passes the time as well. The voice quality is good to very good, and there are several voices from which to choose (male and female). iSpeak does a good job of interpreting acronyms and other unusual words.

AvantGo (upgraded to 8 megs, baybeee!)

PCalc (must have for Weight Watchers!)
PocketMVP

MyScript
Fitaly
Calligrapher
Block Recognizer (in that order)

Less frequently used:
TripTracker
PocketUniverse
PoweroffARM
CalorieKing
Acrobat Reader
DigDug (MS game)
PHM Regedit

PocketBoingo

I have just registered

Pocket Informant
Quick Agenda
Fitaly

I started off browsing the archives here to find an app that would display a sensible week view for the diary, as the one that comes as standard is near useless. Pocket Informant does that, and of course loads more too.

Then I discovered Quick Agenda which means I can have the next few days' appointments on my Today screen. Again, this is something that starts to make my XDA *really* useful. When the demo expired I immediatley started missing appointments

Finally I was looking for some way to modify the "block recogniser" as I had endless trouble with it decising that I wanted special characters, not normal letters. I had used Graffiti before, and was quite happy to carry on using that sort of system. Then I discovered Fitaly. It does take some learning, but there's no way I'd go back to scrawling now!

What I *really* want now is something that will make using my XDA as aphone as simple as my old Nokia. Looking up phone numbers without using a stylus is a real pain. Whatever the shortcomings though, I just love having my phone and PDA combined.

To add some not yet duplicated:

PocketDict (freeware 9MB dictionary)
CIA 2002 FactBook (15MB free world atlas)
Just downloaded PocketDict - it looks great!
So does the CIA FactBook 2002 (with flags & maps), but I was wondering which version of the CIA FactBook you're using? I found several on www.memoware.com, but they all seem optimized for Palm. So I was hoping for some input as to which one works best on my PPC, before downloading the 25 MB file  Thanks.

OK, I might as well post the programs I use daily:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Applications I use daily:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pocket Informant 4.?
IMO, the best PIM replacement. And you need a PIM replacement - I don't understand how people can use the buildt in Calendar/Contacts.
Repligo
I've pretty much stopped using Acrobat Reader after I got Repligo. Also great for viewing Word doc's (doesn't massacre the textformatting like PocketWord), and PowerPoint files.
Tomeraider
Great reference work reader. Very fast! Try the full Webster's encyclopedia (13 MB), or the Wikipedia encyclopedia (103 MB 8O ). Both free.
eWallet
Came with my old iPaq. When I sold my 3850, I kept eWallet and still use it for my 1915.
MySportTraining
Training log. It feels good to see the month view fill up with training sessions, and it's easy to keep track of progression, both in the gym, and cardiovascular.
VBirthday 3 Gold
All of a sudden I'm the golden boy in the family - the one who always remembers birthdays! "Of course I remembered your birthday" I could keep them in my calendar, but I like having them separate.
iRa
A very fast picture viewer from Rasoft. Still in beta, so it's still free! If you like icon editing or create skins for Icbar, check out their Pixello icon/graphics editor. It's very good!
Skyscape
Medical Reference Reader. The books are expensive - but definitively worth it! They are the best! If you're in the medical profession, you have to try these. I've got Dorland's Medical Dictionary and 5MCC.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To keep this running as smoothly as possible, and for managing my PPC, I use:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Icbar
Icbar/Wisbar are the best task switchers, and I couldn't manage my PPC without it!
TauBetaPi Advanced Explorer
The old freeware version - it's now gone shareware :( . Looks and feels like the old Resco File Explorer, which is a good thing! I'm considering upgrading to Resco File Explorer 2003...
PocketTweak
Great freeware app, with a bunch of system tweaks. Most importantly: Making the scrollbars thinner! I really don't understand why MS made the scrollbars so wide, taking up so much screen real estate  But this baby fixes all that - without the need for me to go into the registry :D
PocketBlinds
Do you think the PPC UI looks ugly? Disappointed over PPC 2003 for keeping with the Windows 3.11 look? Download PocketBlinds! It uses minimal resources, but skins your UI - both bars and all buttons!

On my Today Screen I've just downloaded Owner X info which displays a picture of me, and more owner info 8) . I'm also trying out QuickTasks and QuickAgenda at the moment, and they might get to stay!

And something called Soft reset.... :(
That's a great app, too. I use it all the time

I almost did a double take and then realized that this thread was many moons ago and recently revived. So, is the Axim still on the fedex truck? I hope not.

I was confused for a few seconds as well.

I'm pleased to report that the Axim arrived right on time and has been a great success. :D It's working so well that I've not yet been tempted by any of the WM2003 devices.
My little daughter now has an e355 so we have become a two PPC family.

I actually ordered the upgrade when Dell first advertised it and even got a shipping note and invoice for it once. Nothing ever arrived and I wasn't charged so I just didn't get around to ordering again.

I kind of thought that there would be a great new device just around the corner so I just waited. And waited. All my apps are working really well so I'll continue to stick with PPC2002.

Thought it might be interesting to revisit this 9 months later. What do I still use and what has gone the way of the dodo?

First, what I use every day:

Pocket Informant (first app I launch after a reset, never gets turned off). - Still the killer app for me.
Flex Wallet - Still there, but I don't use it daily.
ListPro - Still used daily.
Pocket Money - Still used daily.
Resco File Explorer - Still used pretty much daily.
Diamond Mine (very addicting!) - Don't play at all anymore (don't know why really...).
NiceStart - Still there.
WisBar - Gone.
FITALY - Still the input method of choice.
@mail - Not right now, but looking forward to WebIS Mail 2.

And the rest (use varies from once every day or so to rarely):

Fitaly Letris - Haven't played in months, but it's still installed.
Multi IE - Promoted to daily use now.
NetFront - Not installed anymore.
Pocket Notepad - Still there, but doesn't get used much.
Registry Editor - Still there. Used when needed.
Scarybear My Settings - Still there and running.
Scarybear StatusTicker - Still there and running. Since it's a today plugin, I guess it's used daily.
Launcher - I use this daily now.
ThemeMaster - I use this hourly. :-)
Pocket Streets - Don't use this anymore. Mostly because my travel has cut down to places I know fairly well now.
Pocket TV Browser - Use this daily now.
TextMaker - Not installed.
Resco Picture Viewer - Use this a lot more now that there are picture to show off. 8)
Resco Zipper - Not installed.
TripTracker - Still there.
WorldMate - Not installed anymore.
Monopoly - Still there, but I don't play nearly as much as I used to.
Scrabble - Not installed anymore.
Pocket Chess - Still there, but haven't played in months.
Yahtzee - Not installed anymore.

Now for the new apps I've added since:
PI Today - Finally the today plugin I've been waiting for!
ClearVue - came with my 2215 and I use it mostly for attachment viewing
iPAQ Backup - came with my 2215. I backup daily now.
GigaTask - After many trials and tests, I settled on this as my task switcher.
Nevo - came with my 2215. Very high cool-factor.
RepliGo - Love this viewer!
StopTime - mostly used as an alarm clock when I travel.

As a relatively new PPC user, i went about finding programs based alot on the recommendations from this very thread. I figure I'll add my own list:

Agenda Fusion : First thing I bought. It has all of the features that I was looking for in a Palm app and never really found. Even tried Datebk and wasn't happy with the clutter on the screen. That being said, PI looks very good as well...but I'm happy with Fusion.

Listpro : Still using the demo on this one but will probably buy it. I was having problems coming up with uses for it initially...but now things are just presenting themselves left and right.

Battery Pack : Another simple program that really makes my 1945 so much more useable.

Codewallet : Does exactly what it is supposed to do. I have tons of little numbers and passwords that I use everyday. Until now, I've kept a little cheat sheet in my real wallet. This is so much better, and more secure.

maybe I'll add some more as I find them.

This is a great thread!!!

Okay, This is only about 40% of the stuff crammed on my PPC, but it's the stuff I use either every single day, or at the very least, 5 times a week.

APPS:

uBook (I think the best all around reader)
Airscanner Anti-Virus
AvantGo
GXMark (benchmarks-i like better then SPB BM)
Plus! Sync & Go
Pocket Streets '04
Pocket Weather
Pocket Music
ACDSee Mobile
Cleaner+ (the best cleaner, and I've tried 'em all)
Pocket Biorhythm
Sprite Back-up

UTILITIES: (Today page, & running behind the scenes)

Handy Menu
SideX
MS Voice Command
Pocket Candy
X-Scale Control (Overclocking; I like this better than P Hack Master)
Battery Bar
Journal Bar
Status Ticker
Rhino Stats
Pocket IE Plus (shrinks web pages to fit the screen)

My Favorite Games: (or at keast the ones that get the most play time)

7 Colors
Bookworm
Filler
Insaniquarium
Lemmings
Pocket Billiards
Runes
Seven Seas
Koule
Traffic Jam
Yacht

I'm running a Toshiba e-755. 96 megs ram, 256 meg SD card, 128 meg CF card, Wi-Fi, Belkin case, external USB Keyboard cable, and thumboard for travelling.
