i have heard a rumor, that compaq has extended the warranty of the 3800 series iPAQ to 2 year. I didnīt think it was real, but then i check my warranty using my serial number... and it was real, my warranty has suddenly become longer (15 months to 24) !!

You can check here:

Of course, I am looking at the Compaq USA site:

http://wwss1pro.compaq.com/support/warranty_upgrades/product_specific_warranty.asp

I have a 1-year Warranty (actually, it's sorta 13 months...)

I don't know if your warranty has been extended, but I do know your free phone tech support has been eliminated. That's right. Hewlett 'Paqard' has assimilated it. ':robot:' I bought a Compaq Presario laptop a year and a half ago to replace my HPos before the merger. I haven't needed any tech support, but my cousin needed some for his 38xx and the phone tech was not allowed to tell him how to fix the problem unless he paid $$ for the call. The guy was apologetic and hinted where he could find answers online before the call was cut off by an automatic timer.

Glad I bought an Axim.
Neener, neener. :razzing:

About that Axim:

I have had some of the worst tech support ever from Dell. They have a tech support facility in India, and nothing of course against Indian people in general, but these people are so incompetent it's laughable. Not to mention that their accent makes it really hard to hear over the phone...

I'm still glad I bought a Hewlett Paqard. :D

HP/Compaq seems to do the same thing, AFAICT. One of the three times I sent my 3870 back, I talked to someone who clearly sounded like he was outsourced from the Indian subcontinent. He was clueless too. :(

It's worth saying the other 2 times I had reasonably competent people, and my 3870 eventually got fixed and works fine now.

In short: tech support is steadily worsening across the industry. I don't think our few anecdotes are enough to conclude who's better one way or the other.

You're probably right that tech support is getting worse. Still, in the two times I've had to call HP/Compaq, I've gotten very good support from them, so you never know...

Checked mine and it is up to February 2004.

Wohoo - no extra carepaqs to purchase to extend my warranty!

Yeah, I've certainly had mixed results calling into HP myself. Some of my best and worst experiences have been with HP. Their lower end support *can* be terrible, but their escalated customer support has gone through unbelievable lengths to satisfy me as a customer.

Agreed. It's definitely running parallel to the downturn in the economy. It's real difficult for companies to assess exactly how much impact (or ROI) good customer service has compared to mediocre/bad customer service. When economies get tough, the top folks in a company tend to get short-sighted and want to only focus on initiatives that will show benefit in the immediate quarter; thus, long-term investments such as good customer service tends to get shoved aside.

I took some time and contact HP/Compaq about this, according to the lady I talkted too (remember this is tech support we are talking about) who said that as far as she knows the warranty in Canada and the U.S. of A. is one year only unless you by one of the Carepaq warranties.

I then double checked this with my HP/Compaq Rep. ( I work in the retail computer sector) and he believes that the two year warranty applies to the U.K. only...

But like I said this all comes from the HP/Compaq tech and "Rah Rah" teams... So take it for what it's worth.
