I have just bought a second hand iPAQ 3850 and I am extremely impressed with it so far.
I have upgraded the rom to version 1.2 (the latest I think?) but what else should I install on this wonderful little pc?

Any advice will be appreciated :D

I think Pocket Informant or Agenda Fusion would be a good start. They replace the PIM apps.

what ever else depends on personal prefs..

After Pocket Informant 4.0 my most used application is eWallet by http://iliumsoft.com. I use it to keep passwords, bank accounts, software license information, etc close at hand. There are other Wallet Programs out there: FlexWallet and CodeWallet are two that come to mind.

FlexWallet has received rave reviews from others on this forum. FlexWallet was on sale last week for something like $5.00, but I see the price is back up to $19.99. :( They've discounted the price a couple of times since January, maybe it will happen again.

Enjoy your new toy. :)

Cheers.

I would highly recommend the following:

SBP Pocketplus
Winampaq (for Mp3's)
Taskplus (puts your tasks on your today screen rather than just a count)

Those are three of my faves, but I'm sure there are millions of others...

Pocket Informant and Code Wallet are probably my two most used apps. I use Vehicle Manager by Two Peaks quite a bit too. Any program by Two Peaks is pretty good.

Once you get used to your PPC, I would recommend WisBar. Also, Sprite Software has a new version of their Backup program that is looking really good. It's in Beta right now. Have fun!

Snails (http://www.snailsgame.com/) for some entertainment...
tdLaunch (http://www.nakka.com/soft/ptools/) to display programs on your Today screen.
Calendar+ (http://www.mohairsofa.com/main.aspx?page=7&article=26) to better display your appointments on the Today screen.
TaskPlus (http://gkokot.free.fr/ipaqp02a.htm) to display the actual tasks, and not just the number of them, on your Today screen.
Pocket Explorer (http://www.citadeldevelopment.com/products/pocketexplorer.asp) for a better file explorer than what came with your PPC.
NoteM (http://www.geocities.com/zavorine/wince/mp3.htm) for recording MP3 files... much better than the default Notes recording.
PDAMill Viewer (http://www.pdamill.com/) is a decent image viewer. Note that you can use the hardware buttons to control brightness and image size...

Those are basically the programs I use on a regular basis. Enjoy!

I'd say it depends on what you want to use your PPC for.

For time and contact management - Pocket Informant

If you need a good email system - @mail

If you need to carry documents from different sources and be able to view them on you Ipaq - Repligo

If you want to transfer Word documents from your PC and be able to edit them and transfer them back again - Textmaker.

If you want to listen to music and watch movies in various formats - PocketMVP (free!!!)

If you want to enhance your Today screen and get information - Battery Pack and Journal Bar.

As you see, without knowing what you want to achieve, it's hard to suggest what's right.

A lot of good software here, but I feel one is missing: You gotta have WisBar! It helps you managing your running programs (unlike Palm, PPC's don't really close programs, they just get 'minimized' - so they run in the background until your memory fills up and your PPC gets r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w.

Wisbar shows you all running programs as small icons on the top bar (next to your start button), and you can jump to any program by hitting the icon. It also allows you to customize this bar, adds a 'home' button to get to your Today Screen, shows time/date, and gives you the choice to close or minimize any programs etc. And it's free! Try it out!

Just as the Palm, the buildt in PIM sucks. When I had my Palm V I was a happy Datebk user. For PIM replacements on PPC my money (literally :) ) is on Pocket Informant. I feel the latest 4 version is really good. The support forum for PI also deserves a mention. Great P2P support, and the developer often pops by, answers questions and listen to suggestions - very helpful!

The buildt in File Explorer also sucks, so I got Resco File Explorer. It looks and works just like your file explorer for Windows. I have the 2002 version, but the new 2003 should be even better. Among other things, it handles zipped files easily.

I use all these programs a lot - every day. My PPC would be crap without them!

Thomas.

Actually, for file explorers, there's a new up-and-comer. Check out Advanced Explorer (http://www.angelfire.com/realm3/alphabeta/)... it has most of the features of Resco (but not all, mind you). I really like it so far. And it's free.

Wow. You guys definitely forgot some must-have apps.
1. Flexwallet is an amazing app. Never tried Ewallet, but I can tell you this program is excellent

2. So I guess everyone forgot about that handy dandy little app called PQView. Excellent for image viewing, and other pics. Very handy.

3. Pocket Hack Master. I'm sure your Ipaq is rather slow...eh? I'd advise you to get Pocket Hack Master, and over-clock it. It makes a huge difference, and is extremely useful.

4. Not sure about your IR, but TV Remote Controller also has sweet reviews.

5. Dood! Get Snood! Snood..well, I dont have to mention how amazing this game is.

6. Metallion.

7. Diamond Mine-Excellent game where you move stuff around. Very...ermmm, addicitive.

I see that FlexWallet is on sale again this weekend. Take a look here (http://www.handango.com/brainstore/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=51X125X1443EFB5B5B28CDX8AB643CX9&platformId=2&productType=2&catalog=0&sectionId=0&productId=50259) for the details.

FlexWallet - great program for your passwords and at a nice price!

TreNotes - Excellent organizational tool that allows for links to your other files.

SpreadCE - Loads up fast on my PPC and works with CSV files that I download directly onto my storage card.

If you ever go on hols with friends and need to sort out the accounts, MoneyBox (http://www.geocities.com/caitcif) is very handy. It is a lot more clever than it looks. Check out the user guide for an example.

CityTime (CodeCity) if you work with people in other time zones and want to avoid waking them up in the middle of the night...
PalmReader - so you can buy and read -ebooks (the reader is free, the books are not).

I need to look at YOUR recommended file explorer to see what it offers but I am a confirmed Total Commander user (now in version 5.51 for Windows) and he now offers Total Commander for PocketPC v1.11. (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm) for FREE!

It WAS FREE, NOW it costs $ 10.
It does appear to be very powerful, in fact it has similar functions to the TOTALLY FREEWARE Total Commander for Pocket PC v1.11 (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm)! 8O

I'm hooked on the speed and small data transfer of web clippings, so I'll be bringing them with me using this (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=6645). And I still know a lot of Palm users, so I'll be able to IR with them with that (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=402). And because I'm the kind of tweak that did the icon hack to my Kyocera 6035's phone screen, I just have to have a cluttered today screen using the other thing (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=2781).

Ah, true, but www.webattack.com still has the old version of Advanced Explorer for free on their Pocket PC download pages!! Check it out here (http://www.webattack.com/get/pocketpc/advexplorerfree.html). This version of Advanced Explorer looks and feels like the old Resco Explorer, and that's a good thing :D !

Total Commander has a great file explorer for Windows, but I don't like the UI of their PPC version. Advanced Explorer is the king of PPC freeware explorers for me!

Does somebody still have Advanced Explorer somewhere, because webattack.com has the page up but clicking the download button leads to an error page.
