View Full Version : An Easy Way to Keep Up With Conversations

The single strongest element of this site is you, the community. The discussions we have on the site are great, but due to the volume of news that we're constantly adding to the site, it's hard to keep up with conversations once they go off the front page. Some of you new users might not know about this little hyperlink at the bottom of every discussion page:<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/watchthreads.gif" /><br /><br />If you're logged into the site, you can click on that "Watch this topic for replies", and that discussion thread will be flagged. What does that mean? Well, every time someone responds to that thread, you'll get an email message telling you there's been an update. Don't worry - it won't hammer you with 10 messages an hour. It only sends one message until you come back and check the thread, then it resets and waits for another update. It's a very nice system, one common to many forums, and it helps me keep up on discussions that I want to watch without having to go into the forums and manually check on them.

Doh!

And here I thought that was only for topics that I posted to. :oops:

Just makes PPCT.com even better in my book. :way to go:

Actually, you are automatically subscribed to threads when you post to them. :D

..if the user turns on this option. If you want this option (you may get a lot of email this way) go into PREFERENCES for your account (top right, under the banner) and look under the options. :way to go:

Hmmmm. I can't seem to find the option that says "Watch all of Brad's topics because he's so smart and witty."

I don't see the four buttons shows underneath the "Watch this topic" picture in Jason's post. How do I get those? :wink:

I actually use this feature a lot, but sometimes not all the check marks show in the "options" bar (like sttach signature, stc.) so I have to post & edit so they show up. Any ideas? :?

Sucking up will get you no increased odds of winning any contests. :lol:

A great little feature.

Does anyone know of a forums system that looks good on pocketpc? Or is it worth it etc

I'd guess they are for admins only...
They look like (in order)
* Delete this thread
* Move this thread
* Lock this thread
* ????

Don't quote me on any of this...just a guess. :)

The last is "split this topic and move all of the OT garbage to the Hall of Flame and Shame." :lol:

Going to the phpBB website (http://www.phpbb.com/features.php#moderation) under "Moderation Features" it states four features:

Mass delete/move/lock/unlock of posts
Given that the first three match the corrosponding buttons, it is reasonable to assume that the fourth one is to unlock the thread. Am I right or what? 8)

By the way, there is a bug on that site: when you click "Moderation Features" from the list on the left, you go to:
http://www.phpbb.com/features.php#members not
http://www.phpbb.com/features.php#moderation

I had to go into the source code and figure out what it was supposed to be. :?

It's actually for splitting off posts for moving them into another forum....like HOFS. :wink:

So how do you 'unlock' the thread if there is only a lock button?

It's state-dependant. It's a smart button. :wink:

It changes to "unlock" if the thread is locked.

If you're curious as to the ins-and-outs of phpBB, you should check out the phpBB homepage (www.phpbb.com).

p.s. Update: ah... Jason's too quick for me! Not fair! ;)

I just did the 'admin' demo, and I'm kind of scared at the godlike power you have over us. 8O

Heh. Most people don't realize how lightly we actually moderate around here. ;)

When I first joined as an admin, though, I could feel the same thing. It felt like I was tiptoeing around the extra user interface features.

Do you guys 'prune'? In other words, do you delete old forums? I've tried to access old forums in the past to find them... missing. :?

Nope. You can find posts from Feb 2001 when we first launched the forums. I think "pruning" drastically lowers the value of any online community - you're taking away knowledge that has accumulated over time, which is a bad thing IMO.

Or 2002 for those of us not following the Canadian calendar. :lol:
