I recently installed the VNC software on my pocketpc device. I am
able to connect to my desktop pc from my pocketpc's VNC viewer when
at home on my wireless lan network. What I like to do is to be able
to view my desktop when I'm outside my home using my pocketpc and
cell phone combo to dialup and get on the net and be able to view my
desktop over a dialup. I understand that this is possible but have
not yet been able to get this to work. My desktop pc is win XP home
edition connected to a high speed broadband modem through a D-link
router. I am told that I need to open/forward port 5800. How do I do
this? has anyone been able to do this instead of using Gotomypc or
terminal services client on the pocketpc which requires win XP pro
edition.

Where did you get the Pocket VNC? I have been looking for this, but no luck so far.

I have an SMC router, not a D-Link, and I can open a port using the router's adminstrator options. It has options for handling special applications and ports.

I tried to find screen shots of the D-Link admin screens on their Web site, but I couldn't. Have you tried calling D-Link's tech support?

You need to forward/open TCP Port 5900...

Dude!

It supports right-click!

In the screenshot on the site, they show File Explorer open in the background and I see why now. You have to have some other program open which will allow you to bring up an input panel since the VNC Viewer does not trigger one to pop up. Unless you have a keyboard to attach to your Pocket PC, there is no other way to input a hostname. (Though once you've done it once, it shows up in the listbox.)

Also, as with previous PPC VNC Viewers, performance is horrible even over a wireless LAN connection. I still use the Terminal Services Client whenever possible. (Of course, most of the time I need to remotely access a system, I have my notebook nearby. Still, it's nice to see that somebody implemented a PPC VNC Viewer with the ability to send a right-click.

mayart, the bandwidth of a phone isnt enough for a useable connection, not to mention if your limited on megs per month, it would eat them up in no time.

saying that, it should be no different connecting over your phone as it would be connecting to your computer's ip from any other remote dialup.

I currently use vnc to controle a divx movie box in the living room. its a mini atx case with not keyboard/mouse, only a wireless usb device. saddly the preformance is pretty bad. :/
