The phone is manufactured by HTC, maker of the the first Smartphone, known as Orange SPV. The new Smartphone 2002 will be called "SMART Amazing Phone", and has had the code name "HTC Tanager" during its development stages. They could have kept the code name, in my opinion. The two phones are similar but according to people who have used both generally say that the hardware has been improved and is easier to use.<br /><br />"HTC Tanager". The official name of the worlds second commercially introduced Smartphone 2002 is "SMART Amazing Phone". The Smart Amazing Phone is comparable to the recently announced Orange SPVx as well as the Smartphone which will be introduced later this year by T-Mobile. Therefore these pictures might be even more interesting to see. Overall, the second Windows Powered Smartphone from HTC is nicer shaped than the first one - the "HTC Canary". While the Canary has a 4 ways D-Pad plus action button, the Tanager uses a small 5 way joystick. Overall, the Canary and the Tanager are completely the same phones except the buttons are larger on the Tanager and it use also a different (some people say better) screen."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/tanager_01.jpg" />

I love my Tanager... but, alas, I don't have that camera, yet. I have replaced my PPC PE because of it.

I have been waiting for the MS smartphone to be released in the USA. Why don't they add bluetooth support to it right off the bat ? It seems incomplete without it, in my opinion. I would prefer bluetooth to the camera option.

I agree. A new kid on the block needs to do what everyone else does... and then some.

The Phone is officially named Tanager by HTC. The carriers then are given the choice to name their own device.

In this case, SMART Communications of the Philippines banked on their name which coincidentally is also the name of the platform. So they put the two together and named their own offering SMART Amazing Phone. The Tanager which is also the basis for Orange's second phone will be named SPVx... T-Mobile has the option to name their Tanager too.

You can see the official name of the phone at the label at the back when you remove the battery. You will see that it is clearly labeled Tanager.

Anyway, SMART Communications of the Philippines is the second carrier in the world to offer the Smartphone 2002 platform. This was launched last February 14, 2003.

Some French hackers figured out how to unlock the original SPV phone (SIM unlock). So you can just buy one on eBay or possibly from Orange, run the unlock program and have an unlocked SPV. Then you get a free sim card from T-Mobile (with service contract) and you can use it just fine in the US. I should know more this week when my unlocked SPV shows up (a real Orange unlocked SPV actually).

Well, I guess that's possible... but from what I've seen, they have been tweaking the devices to work specifically with a particular network in terms of services. You do get mroe functionality if you get a phone which is originally from the intended carrier.]

This may not be too important but things like WAP Portals or SAT (STK) services are also some things to consider...

For some things like multimedia SMS messages but for general GSM/GPRS connectivity it supposedly is the same. I'd love to get an MS SmartPhone here in the US from a US carrier but no one offers them.

That's what I meant... :D If they'r not important to you then a phone from a different carrier would be fine. BUt from what I've heard that the latest ROM release includes a software lock (for signed apps) which is harder to break.
