Good lord! How can one man have SO many systems?

Our house has four PCs, one laptop, and way too many Pocket PCs. ;-)

Jason, I like PPCs as much as the next guy, but.....FOUR Toshiba's? :?:

Microsoft donated them to my church - I'm just getting ready to roll them out there and train the staff to use them. That's not quite normal for me. ;-)

By the way, that Shuttle system looks SWEET!

It sits, sadly neglected for the most part. The problem is that it's still crammed full of parts from vendors who lent/gave me them for the book, and I still haven't returned them. So I have this psychological aversion to using it because it's not my "real" PC - I have to get over that someday soon, return the parts, buy replacement ones, and use it as my real computer. See how messed up I am?

Hey Jason, I have the exact same bookshelf as you do. Its the Billy bookshelf from Ikea, right? Ah, good 'ol Ikea.

Ikea bookshelf, Ikea wall shelves, Ikea desk, Ikea chair (on the right), and behind my workstation (not in the photo) I have two more Ikea bookshelves and several chairs. Ikea rules. 8)

....Tight, clean, calm -

They won't let me have bright colors....or sharp pointy objects. Has something to do with my unstable mental condition.

Killer monitor too - that thing looks huge!

That is my new baby...the Dell 1800FP (OEM Samsung 182T) which has replaced my old piece of crap Sony G400. Picture quality is INCREDIBLE, and it is AWESOME for gaming (no ghosting, or pixel jitter)...and that's in ANALOG mode. I just need to upgrade my OEM video card to either an ATI 9500 or NVidia Ti 4200/440 (can't decide which).

What's the lampshade thingie though?

That's my vanity mirror. I use it to check my make-up. :P

palmfactory.com?? Foo, say it isn't so...

I also own the Pocketfactory domain as well.

Here is my "workarea" as it looked over Christmas break when I was back home in Germany. Right now I'm in college in the United States and my work area is no more than the left-most laptop (Dell Inspiron 8200) with a switch and WAP and lot of books. I don't have a camera here, so maybe I could borrow one and take some photos of my dorm-room work area later.

Anyway, the room is a little messy--but compared to other photos, I'm not so sure anymore. BTW, the girl in the chair is my sister.

Yep! That's an old 300 MHz PCV-240 Vaio. :D While it's already over five years old, it's been updated so many times that it still runs Win XP nicely enough to have the rest of the family use it to check e-mail, surf the web, and just type up word documents.

I'm more frightened by people who discuss Star Trek lore as if it were real. I once visited a ST newsgroup where posters were discussing the number of ships in Starfleet, which class of Battlecruiser had more firepower, and how long the theoretical shelf-life is for Dilithium Crystals. I shudder to think these loonies have voting power! :?

Here's my home office, minus my wonderful IBM ThinkPad, which I'm not using right now. I must say, I can't profess to having the latest/greatest, although I got a great deal on a P4 2.53GHz at Christmas. However, my claim to fame is my 24" (yes, 24") 16x10 aspect ratio Compaq monitor (Sony Trinitron tube). This thing is 4.5 yrs old and still rocks. I run it at 1920x1200, although I have to bump it back to 1280x800 to run NFS-Porsche Unleashed.

Did I mention that NFS-Porsche Unleashed absolutely ROCKS on a 24" screen? With my boxing-day special Microsoft wheel for $20, it's driver's heaven.

And that other stuff? My keybard, Bowflex, bass amp and 14-channel mixer, most of which I don't have nearly enough time to play with.

Both Vaio and iBook are pretty cool. The Vaio is a year old, 1.7 P4, 256 mb RAM (I know, I know....), 80 GB HD. It has one problem: when it goes unused, it starts stuttering. http://janak.net/ppct/my-office-2.jpg

You'll notice in the second picture that we have more than 1 person in our office who's a PPCT fan. :D

Our (standard-sized) office contains a assortment of equipment, including but not limited to: 6 computers
7 monitors (3 flatpanels)
3 laptops, and a bunch elsewhere
2 printers
Fridge
Speakers on the wall for great stereo sound, plus 4 desktop sets of digital speakers
Polycom speakerphone, Siemens 2.4GHz cordless phones
Two Logitech MX700 mice, one a gift by an amazing benefactor
OC3 connection to the Internet, plus a ORiNOCO AP-1000 access point
Most every single Microsoft product known to man
38 posters and signs of various sizes
Halogen lamps, controlled by X-10
8 power strips, maxed out (yes, we've tripped the building circuit-breaker and had to call the Facilities folks)
2 bottles of wine (don't ask)
and, last but not least, 6 Pocket PCs, including 2 Pocket PC Phone Editions, 3 iPaqs, and 1 Toshiba e740 Top that. ;) Unfortunately, not everything can be included in two photographs.

Anyone want to guess which desk is mine? You might be surprised...

I don't know if we'll ever be able to move out. 8O

I think I have to explain some people the concept of stereo. It's about sound that comes from two different directions, giving depth to the sound. There is no need in getting two of everything, and some backups just in case.... ;)

Of course there is! I currently have 12 speakers running off my single comp, controlled by 3 soundcards and two receivers. All play audio from any source in the room... TV, comp, game consoles, whatever. I also have another 5 speakers waiting to be hooked up if ever one should fail. (4 satellites, 4 stereo, 2 centers, 2 subs) (plus 2 backup satellites, 2 backup stereo, and a backup center)

And using three soundcards allows the speakers to be split between sources... the Audigy can be playing Winamp while the Live plays a DVD and the 3rd card can play something else on headphones or the spare speaker set. By the way, if anyone knows how to make multiple sound cards play the same source at once, please PM me.

Makes for some realistic games, DVDs, and Dance Dance Revolution sessions.

Both Vaio and iBook are pretty cool. The Vaio is a year old, 1.7 P4, 256 mb RAM (I know, I know....), 80 GB HD.Still need to check the RAM or the moronic XP install that came with it for flaky drivers. Probably time to reinstall from scratch. But I've been planning to do that for a year.... :D

I've always loved the design of SONY desktop PCs but I'm just a bit gun shy of their driver support. For that reason I'm pretty much a Dell guy, although from what I've heard Dell is slipping in that area. And Dell offers some incredible deals on accessories like the 18" LCD I just bought. But who knows, maybe my next system will be Sony. The new tower design is killer! I like it better than the G4 PowerMac. 8O

My system is rather like yours...1.7ghz P4, 768MB RAM (that's what you need my friend) and 60gig HD (7200 RPM). My video card is a generic OEM Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 32MB with no DVI connector (yeah, that's the next item on my shopping list). And, like you, my XP install is WAY past its expiration date. It has the ripe oder of registry rot and orphan file bloat.

It has one problem: when it goes unused, it starts stuttering.

Hmm...my system sometimes makes a clicking sound that comes and goes with the wind. Don't know what it is.

The iBook is amazing. I want the same lamp thingy you're having, so the iBook doesn't get lonely.

I love Apple products. OSX is incredibly innovative, so much that in many ways it makes XP look like leftover oatmeal. But the achilles heal of the whole platform (Apple's dirty little secret) is that the hardware architecture (RISC; PowerPC) just doesn't have the horsepower to run OSX is resolute manner. XP is a 1000x faster, even on my old 1.7gig rig. If Jobs would swallow his pride, and his ego, by migrating to Wintel hardware, OSX would kick some serious arse (for you British lot). The G4 iMac is great, but I really think I would be better off with an iBook like you. I don't use it that much except for when I'm in a Mac mood.

Amen to that. I held off on switching to LCDs due certain gaming and fast motion video issues which are inherent in LCDs. But even in ANALOG mode this LCD has proven to be worth its weight in gold. Best of all, unlike CRTs, LCDs don't suffer Geometry distortions which drove me CRAZY on every CRT I've owned!

Like you, I will NEVER go back to a CRT. I only wish I had made the switch sooner.

This is a great thread...

I'm a geek and all, but I have to ask, why do you need more than say...one maybe two monitors?

I'm a programmer... source code on the monitor on the left, design windows on the middle monitor, and email on the right. The display on the far left is a TV monitor I use when editing video and to keep up on the news.

You can say that again, I just checked the prices and Apple has dropped the prices quite a bit. Hmm...A dual G4 1.42gig with two 20" Apple monitors......

they did drop the prices to $1999 - still too high for my budget. For something similar, but a little bit cheaper check these: http://www.formac.com/p_bin/

First off, you should all know that I am a very anal-retentive person by nature. Not to the point that everything must be in exactly the "correct" spot, but I must have things neat and tidy.

I'm staying with a friend and his wife for about three months (actually, there's only about one more month to go) and have set up a work space in their basement next to all of his computing equipment. I will do him the courtesy of not showing photos of his desks. My setup at home is a bit more elaborate, but as I am not home now, I can't show you that.

In the first photo, you will notice that I've gone to great lengths to hide cables and wires from view and to get them off the floor under the desk. I hate my feet bumping into power strips and getting tangled up in cords, so they are all meticulosuly attached to the back of the desk with Velcro straps, and come down to the UPS on the floor to the right of the desk in a single, neat bundle. :) The lone wire on the floor under the desk goes to a telephone mounted on the wall on the other end of the basement. (Grrr...) ;)

http://www.beauvais1.com/images/desk_front_view.jpg

Yes, the desk is pretty much always like that; I didn't ask the cleaning fairy to make a house call prior to the photo. The notebook is a Dell Latitude L400. The Pocket PC is, of course, an HP iPAQ h5455. The right speaker is sitting on top of the notebook's external DVD ROM/CD-RW drive. The receiver for the cordless mouse is mounted on the inside of the right desk leg. (It's the blue thing that you can just barely see -- the upper-right corner of the mouse pad is "pointing" at it in the photo.) All printing is done to network printers elsewhere in the basement.

To the right of the desk, you can see my friend's Win2K Server (the full tower) and his video capture/DVD recording box (the little Gateway machine). The VCR on my desk is attached to the video machine because he is currently converting several tapes to DVD. His main workstation is not visible in this photo. (Hell, it's barely visible in real life under all the crap.) ;)

http://www.beauvais1.com/images/desk_side_view.jpg

This image is just a closer view of the desk from a different angle. Tucked away behind the LCD is a spindle of CD-Rs. Easy to reach, but out of sight. :)

Dave, you win the "cleanest desk" award. I only reach that level about 4-5 times a year. I like to keep my desk clean, but I'm usually too busy to keep it that clean. Most impressive -- I applaud the neatness, and the prominence of your iPaq. :)

Here's where I work.
I got both of those screens running of my C840 laptop currently. My old comp is being sent down from home so I can put linux on it just for fun :)
BTW, that screen is a professional Viewsonic capable of 1920x1440, with a DP of .21. It cost me $800, but it is sooooooo sweet. Use them for video editing and 3D graphics in Maya.
And Unreal II and Doom III when i get the chance :)
Also notice the bluetooth mouse...works incredibly, except it won't let me sync over bluetooth!!! AHH!!! Damn Microsoft.....
http://people.vanderbilt.edu/~george.sibble/DSC00033sm.JPG
And this is what really takes up half of my room......Dolby Digital decoder, SACD player and w JBL 412s with a 200 watt built in amp in each. And yes, they receive DD from my laptop....great for DVDs and waking up my entire dorm. And yes, they do take up half of my damn room.
And the teddy bears are my gf's....she's hot so I am willing to put up with them

Hey Foo Fighter, I really like that desk you have in your picture. What furniture company is that by?

It's made by a company called Fornier (which I believe is no longer in business). I purchased it from Office Depot about 5 years ago. This thing is built like a tank (which is a quality I was looking for), the desktop is twice the normal thickness of a typical laminate desktop (you can drive a car on it and won't bend or buckle) and each end is supported by quad hallow steel pipes with shelves in between for my printer, scanner, and subwoofer. Needless to say, it serves its task extremely well.

Hey, GSibble...is that one of my themes on your iPaq? I seem to remember making one very much like it.

I honestly couldn't tell you. I got it off pocketpcthemes.com and the author is someone named AfroCreame. You can go to this link to check it out:

http://www.pocketpcthemes.com/preview.asp?ID=3882

About the theme: I hate MACs, but I love OSX. It runs rock solid and is so expandable since its built on a UNIX shell. Moreover, I just love the look of it. I have my IPaq running that pretty apple theme, and then Wisbar with a OSX theme that I created myself. You can get it from here

http://www.pelmarinc.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=3e5644af06b05b2b;act=ST;f=5;t=416

Honestly, I have people compliment me on the theme/wisbar combination all the time. I also have an OSX theme on my XP machine so they all match. Its pretty cute.

On another note, how come no one has asked me about my speakers??? They are the biggest ones so far in this thread and the SACD player I run off them makes the music sooooo incredible. They are the coolest things I own!!! Oh well, I guess no one here is an audiophile.... :(

Foo Fighter

Yep, I made one identical to this on Pocketthemes.

About the theme: I hate MACs, but I love OSX. It runs rock solid and is so expandable since its built on a UNIX shell. Moreover, I just love the look of it.

OSX is incredible, but Macs are sorely underpowered. My 700mhz G4 iMac is, at times, almost as slow as my old vintage PII 350. And the 1ghz PowerMac we have at work is a dog. My stomach turns every time I hear a Mac evangelist clamor on about the "Megahertz myth" and how Macs are actually faster than PCs.

By the way, you do know there is an excellent freeware app that creates the OSX Dock in XP, don't you? I use on my XP box and it runs incredibly well, and works EXACTLY like OSX's dock. :)

On another note, how come no one has asked me about my speakers??? They are the biggest ones so far in this thread and the SACD player I run off them makes the music sooooo incredible. They are the coolest things I own!!! Oh well, I guess no one here is an audiophile.... :(

Yes, I am somewhat of a PC audiophile myself. You're speakers kick some serious chin. One of the speaker system I've been drooling over are these cool looking satellites: http://www.harman-multimedia.com/shop_detail.html?cart=HK1_104584116849988&sku=CREATURE&id1=2

Unfortunately, I don't believe they offer true thumping power I crave. It's that whole Style over Substance thing, which is a shame because they look really cool.

GSibble
02-21-2003, 04:43 PM

This is my home built AMD 1800+, 608mb with 80Gb HD main desktop with a 19" monitor, running XP-Pro. Also my old P166, 64mb with 2Gb HD which has Mandrake 9.0 at the moment, but sometimes has good old BeOS on it.
Also my pride and joy, the Sony SR77 laptop and my JVC digital camcorder. Hiding in shame in the corner is my old Orange visor. I am waiting to upgrade to a PPC or a PalmOS5 device. Also this is all connected to my Netgear hub, which goes though the loft into my fathers study where another hub and the internet router connect my mothers PC and all of us to our 600K internet connection.
http://www.lonesniper.com/pocketpcthoughts02.jpg
The big slack of black boxes, is my CD player, Amp and old VCR. This is all connected to my PC with cables under the floor boards so I get great sound with the huge speakers by my desk, great for watching all those Divx movies, and also TV on my PC.
All the CD's are redundant now as I burn them all to MP3 and my collection of childhood action figures are just dust magnets. Must find someone to clean them for me, or buy them off me :)

I'd be more than happy to give them a good home. That Nick Fury poster also. He's no Punisher, but how can anyone forget the Howling Commandos and SHIELD. Make mine Marvel!

Hello people, this is my work space at home, when
I'm watching TV I'm always doing some stuff, it doesn't make me
tired or get me to hate my job. I actually enjoy being here. For
some people this doesn't work because they need concentration or
blah blah excuses. But for others, it's the best way to work. Some
of my friends also have a similar kind of set up. I hope they share
their work space with you fox's. ciao take care.

Hey Steve, you're going to leave a permanent dent in the carpet with that stack of PCs. :P

Ha, I put a second monitor on the desk and the wife flipped! She wants the whole mess relocated (read: out of her sight). Now I just have to figure out where to hide it!!!

I'll take pictures of the craters in the carpet!!!

Steve

Homecare Tip - Put an Ice cube on the dents and watch 'em magically vamoose. :D

Andy,

What, you don't get enough EMF exposure, you gotta put your wifi router on top of your monitor? 8O

my collection of childhood action figures are just dust magnets. Must find someone to clean them for me, or buy them off me :)

If you saw the post of my room earlier back, you would know that I could definitely give them a good home. I don't collect much unboxed stuff, but depending on what you are looking to get for them, I might be interested. Could you post or pm a closer up pic of what you have?

That was one of the recommended places to put it believe it or not. To tell you the truth, it normally sits attached to the side of my desk but I couldn't get it in the shot. Besides, I had a head cold so thought that would cure it.... :D

My 5 year old daughter likes to decorate my work area.

My favourite piece of workplace technology is my footrest - a section of maple tree trunk chopped in half.

Here's the new computer desk I just put in my bedroom this week. Much more effecient design for a computer than some executive desk built in the 50's.

Another Wal Mart desk like me an Rirath's, SWEET!

It's the $99 neck killer!

$99?! I only paid $39 at the President's Day sale at Staples. I don't mind the angle of the monitor thus far, but its certainly making me want to start looking at flat screens which will fit in that space.

Yes, that is a big stack of AOL/Earthlink CDs on the upper part there. I've got it made if i ever need free internet access.

I use em as coasters.

To paraphrase your signature line....

You can't expect to reach enlightenment without the use of at least three CRT/TFT/[Your choice] monitors

(Besides, it saves turning the lights on. You'd have to get up and move to do that.)

There have been many questions about dual monitors, so I thought I would take a stab at answering them. If you are a true multi-tasker, then you probably have this setup already. I was little skeptical at first, but when I decided my 17 inch monitor was not cutting it anymore, I decided to go with duals, instead of buying a 22 or 24 inch monitor. So, premise one...it can be more cost effective.

Looking back, I can't even begin to imagine life without them. I know that may sound dramatic, but there is something very great about being able to work/monitor completely different things at the same time without having to readjust pane sizes etc. For instance, I personally use one monitor for the following: In photoshop, I alter an image one one screen while keeping the original on the other, or I also use the same setup for coding on one screen and previewing that code on the other. I know you can just use Alt+Tab to flip between screens...but believe me, life on this side is so much better.

Oh, and since someone previously asked how to configure such a system: there are several ways, but the most commonly used methods are:
1. to buy a video card with dual heads which supports two monitors, or
2. buy an add on PCI video card that will support dual monitors and use your existing AGP as your primary card. This latter method is much cheaper than buying a card with dual heads, but if you buy a PCI card that is comparably much lower in quality (compared to your AGP) then you will suffer from great images on one monitor with crappy images on the other.

I had a dual setup at work once upon a time. Ran into some programs that just DID NOT like using the 2nd or 3rd monitor. So I wimped out and went back to 1 monitor.

Ok Kaber and GoldKey I will PM you a link to some larger pics. But I must tell everyone that I don't really wanna get rid of them...i just don't want to clean them :D

Take a look at the dust on Mr LaForge. I think he would be court marshalled for turning up on the bridge like that.

Also for any other Nick Fury fan's here is the poster in full. I had to do it on an angle because of the flash glare. The Nick Fury V SHIELD mini series was the best!!
