Hello, I'm looking to purchase a PCMCIA sleeve for an IPAQ. I don't want the newer "plus" one but rather the older version. If you are selling one, either reply to this thread or send me a private message with your price offer. By the way, I'm in NY state.

Have an original PC Expansion pack with the battery. Hardly used. Sell for $80. Email [email protected]

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you want a PC Card Plus sleeve? The removable battery seems like a big plus. The list prices were the same, too.

For two reasons really. First of all, I need a PCMCIA sleeve to use a PCMCIA card hooked up to a hard drive (http://www.tjotala.com/hardware/storagebrick/default.htm) for my car, so I can listen to MP3s. Since this will always be in my car, it will be powered by a cigarette lighter plug and the removable battery is of no importance. The second, and more important reason, is that I would like to place the iPAQ/sleeve into a Arkon car mount (http://www.arkon.com/expansionsleeve.html) which does not work with the plus pack. ("NOTE: Does NOT work with expansion pack plus or cover pack sleeves.") Hopefully that explains it.

Yeah, that about covers it. :-)

If you do set this up, let us know how it works. I'd be worried that a hard drive in a car would be subject to crashing fairly easily. Unless you have a lot of MP3s that you want to use, you might consider one of those cheaper 1 GB cards.

In fact, I have most of my MP3s on a 512 MB CF card (a few are on my 256 MB SD card). To play them, I use a cassette adapter to hook my iPAQ 3870 into my car stereo. When I play MP3s, I'm also usually using my Pocket CoPilot GPS sleeve, which came with a windshield mount. It's very cool having the GPS giving me directions while listening to MP3s. :-)

Sure, I'll post how things work out. I thought about the hard drive being subject to movement but I thought about it and I think if I pad it nicely, I can prevent most of that. Of course, you never know so it's worth a shot. Also, I'm a pretty big music fan 8) and the idea that I can have all my MP3s with me (over 2300 right now--about 10.3 GB) at once is wonderful. I didn't pay $90 for the PCMCIA HD kit either, I found one on Ebay for $30. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3401410653&category=3710) I decided to get a 20 GB IBM 40GN HD, which I ordered yesterday. Now about the only thing I still need is the PCMCIA sleeve and a cigarette lighter plug.

The second stage of this project, was also to add GPS capabilities. I'm looking at getting the Holux GM-210 GPS mouse along with Tomtom Navigator. (http://www.haid-services.de/pd-513183199.htm?defaultVariants=search0_EQ_Wählen Sie Ihren PDA_AND_{EOL}&categoryId=1) But that part of the project will have to wait until this summer though, when I have more time. I already have a Garmin GPS-12 and a cable to connect to my iPAQ 3800, but the GPS has to be manually powered on and is not very good for hooking up to a PDA for navigation, so I think a dedicated GPS mouse would do much better.

Finally, instead of using a cassette adapter and degrade your sound, :) use a auxilary input adapter IF your car stereo supports a CD-changer. (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-eQnI9WPdbyT/cgi-bin/prodsearch.asp?s=0&g=50900&est=&search=aux+input+adapter) You will get much better sound quality and if you have a amp/subwoofer hooked up, you'll get the full car sound effect.

Yeah, but, unfortunately, my Mustang doesn't have a CD changer or an Aux input that I know of.

Also, the better sound quality presumes that the headphone jack on an iPAQ supports better audio quality than a cassette. Have you seen any audio measurements on it? It would be nice to see at least the power, frequency range and THD for the iPAQ (or any other Pocket PC).
