Now that I have a spare PPC laying around, (iPAQ 38XX), I was thinking of playing around with an alternate OS. I was wanting to get some suggestions and opinions on some options. The only choices I'm familiar with is, well, Familiar and Opie. Any thoughts??? :scatter:

First of all, OPIE is not an OS. It's a GUI that runs on top of Familiar. It's very similar to qt/e, which is used on the Zaurus handhelds, except it is more optimized. There are other GUIs available for Familiar and Intimate, such as: gpe, X, and a couple others mentioned on handhelds.org. As far as alternate Operating Systems go, for now there really is only Linux and QNX.
So far, there only two distrobutions available for Linux (on PocketPCs): Familiar, and Intimate.

Familiar can be found here: http://familiar.handhelds.org/
Intimate (based off of debian): http://intimate.handhelds.org/
GPE: http://gpe.handhelds.org/
OPIE: http://opie.handhelds.org/
QNX (ipaq 36xx/37xx only, at least thats what the site says): http://207.198.90.123/ipaq_bsp/toc.html

Sorry about that... I worded my statement wrong... I meant to say that I'm only familiar with Familiar running Opie... that the only configuration that I've gotten to play around with (on someone else's PPC).

Don't go there, I found the whole experiance to be less than satisfying. But if you have nothing better to do....why not, just make sure you have a wireless card or a nic that's is supported.

Well, the thing is, if you're going to install linux on your ipaq, you need to be familiar with linux for the most part. But if you ever come across a problem or need help on something go onto handhelds.org's irc channel and they'll help you out.

Info. on dualbooting can be found here: http://www.handhelds.org/handhelds-faq/dualboot.html

Note: You may want to look on the site for more/updated information on this. A great way to find out how you can do dualbooting is ask one of the handhelds.org techs on their irc channel, about it. They are very helpful.

And some info. on restoring WinCE:

(this link also provides you with a link on how to backup your system before installing linux)

Hope that helped! :)
