That depends on what you mean by "free." There is a vast difference between "free" and "pirated." MemoWare (http://www.memoware.com/) and Fictionwise (http://www.fictionwise.com/) both have a nice collection of (legally) free e-books in a variety of formats. Palm Digital Media (http://www.palmdigitalmedia.com/) has a small selection of free e-books (http://www.palmdigitalmedia.com/free.cgi) for its excellent Palm Reader software, but many of their commercial titles are very high quality, and most are reasonably-priced. (Although I've seen quite a few recently for nearly $20, which I feel is totally absurd.)

Happy reading!

free (and legitimately free) ebooks here at MS (http://www.mslit.com/default.asp?mjr=FRE).

In the "Contents" section of the forum there is a good set of comments about the MS E-Reader from Ed Hansberry, the Site Administrator and Ken Mattern, of ESSPC http://esspc-ebooks.com/default.htm. There are many books available at his site. Most are out of copyright books. He asks for a minimal donation. I love reading with the PPC. Someday I hope college textbooks will be available for the E-Reader.

How do you know if you have an illegal ebook??? I searched for Stephen King on Kazaa and tons of books came up, are all of these books illegal copies?

Did you do a search in the forums for "free books"? I'm guessing no, because you probably would have found this free E-book thread (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6150) from last month. :-)

I have refused to use Kazaa and similar services. This is partly because of the copyright issue, and also because they put spyware and adware on your system. This greatly increases the amount of spam that you receive.

Generally speaking, if you obtain something using a file sharing service such as Kazaa, it's pirated. That's not universally true, but I feel safe in saying that 99% of content that is traded that way is pirated.

How everyone overlooks some of the largest and legal libraries availble.....they may not have King and Chabon, but they contain some of the best books in the world.

There are tons of legal open source ebooks availble at guttenburg press: http://gutenberg.net/ (including many college required text's) and many other ebook sites in .txt, html, .pdb, .lit, and .prc format. A fave of mine is www.Blackmask.com, they have complete collections of "The Shadow", "Doc Savage", and "The Avenger" original pulps in a choice of formats.
