View Full Version : Yahoo Without Avantgo

<a href="http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/">http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/</a><br /><br />You can put Yahoo on your device with a Mobile Favorite pointing to <a href="http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/">http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/</a> without going through Avantgo. The Yahoo Avantgo channel is about useless as it often forgets who you are and when you go to get your information, you are staring at default settings that are worthless to most.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2003/20030120-yahoo.gif" /><br /><br />I believe this is meant for cell phones but works perfectly on the Pocket PC screen. Even of you don't sync it, it is a good URL to have in your Mobile Favorites. I am deleting my regular My Yahoo links on my Pocket PC. They are quite painful over GPRS, even with images turned off.

I've been using this for a while and it works great. I'm still unable to configure pocket outlook for sending my Yahoo mail, even though I can receive mail. I use the same settings as Outlook on my desktop, including outgoing mail needs authentication.

Interesting point, I can receive mail, but not if there is mail in the outbox to be sent. However, when in the cradle with all the same settings I can send email from Yahoo via Active Sync and my computer.

Perhaps the pocket outlook is not up to date, but I have EUU3 for my Casio E-200.

Any ideas would be appreciated--especially if someone has it working.

Just tried this out and looks good...BUT...

How do I set the Mobile Favourites to go more than 3 links deep. When I try to change that setting it will default to 3. That means I can't actually read the e-mails.

Any ideas?

How do I sync Mobile Favorite to Storage Card? Thank you.

Yea, I've been using this for quite some time now. It's a great site. EVMO is also a great site for finding PPC formatted sites.

I'm afraid I haven't used it for email, just news, movies, and weather...

The problem with the AvantGo Version caused by a Yahoo security issue. They require that users periodicly re-enter their user name and password info.

I would suggest non-wireless users complain to Yahoo directly.

Definitely - it isn't an Avantgo issue. It is Yahoo and forgetting cookies. This worked great 2-3 years ago, then they changed something on the Yahoo server. After 6 months of "yeah, we know, we made some changes and we still need to fix that cookie issue on the Avantgo channel" I just removed it.

this is front page news? ;) i've been using this address for at least 6 months. i figured most PPC'ers knew about this otherwise i would have spread the word myself. since Yahoo took about free POP email access this has been the only way for me to check mail.

urologyhealth - do you pay Yahoo for POP access? it's not free anymore. as long as you subscribe to one of their plans with POP access Pocket Outlook should work. it does for me (i eventually broke down and shelled out the $$ to yahoo)

I've never used Mobile Favorites and would like to try what Ed/Kati are suggesting but I'm having trouble with the process. Here is what I am doing:

> Open Internet Explorer and click on Mobile Favorites icon at bottom of screen (next to Home icon).
> Select the Add/Delete option at bottom of screen. This is where confusion begins.
> Select Add option below the list of Mobile Favorites. Avantgo.com is already in the Name field. I can type over this but when I try to complete the URL address it will not let me edit.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? Thanx.

Yes, I pay for POP mail to yahoo.

shawnc, you have to browse to the page that you want to add, before adding it.

There's another way to add Favorites items like I described here (http://www.geocities.com/grieg_winter/fav/index.html). I actually uses the address http://mobile.yahoo.com/home which redirects to the same address mentioned.

By the way, according to Yahoo!, the page is designed for mobile devices, not just mobile phones.

I wouldn't call it "News", but I'd definitely call it a "Tip". When I posted about it on a thread in response to someone needing weather info, there were a number of "Hey, I didn't know you could do that" comments.

Personally, I'd like to see more tips on this level - ways to get the most out of PPC. Sure, a number of users, particularly long-time ones, may already know, but it's still helpful for a good number of people.

The only time Yahoo settings work as advised by MURPH is when my unit is in the cradle connected to my desktop which is connecting via Verizon DSL.

Once, I try Verizon dial-up I can receive, but not send and can't receive if there is mail in outbox???

Weird.

I agree. Tips are good, even if repeated occasionally or already known to the masses of veterans.

BTW, the only reason I still use the AvantGo is I've been too lazy to try any web caching apps that retrieve news online and stores it for later reading. The direct Yahoo! URL is great if you're always connected to the net, but alas I am not.

Ed and kati42,

Thanks for the tip on the mobile version.

I would be interested in a list of successful PPC/Mobile websites, if someone could start it some time.

I'm sure the list of sites would increase with our many readers.

Txs again.

But by using Mobile Favorites and making them offline readable, it *does* retrieve news for offline viewing. Unless you mean newsgroups.

I don't know why you have to go through that wap site while it would be easier to go to yahoo's mobile site and access your account that way. The correct URL has been posted here and in several sites a long time ago.

http://home.mobile.yahoo.com/

Here is the correct URL.

Does anyone know how to access Wired's AvantGo-formatted content? I can't find any Pocket IE friendly pages but I presume they're there somewhere for AvantGo to cache.

Normal pages are usable but complain "about upgrading your browser". (Roll on PIE 5.5 in PocketPC 2003!)

[UPDATE: found it at http://www.wired.com/news/avantgo/ when I got there via EVMO.]

Yup, I never bothered looking into Mobile Favorites. I always figured it was just favorites links you can mark from your PC and those links would replicate to the PPC (which isn't all that revolutionary). I never realized that it would replicate offline content as well.

Personally, I'd like to see more tips on this level - ways to get the most out of PPC. Sure, a number of users, particularly long-time ones, may already know, but it's still helpful for a good number of people.
I'd love to see more tips as well. It would be great if we started collecting these tips and then put them on a static page somewhere... would be especially helpful for newbies.

gwinter,

Thanx for taking the time to help out. I have a couple of questions. How do you "browse" to the page that you want to add without a wireless connection? Do I have to browse on my desktop and then somehow add it? I know this seems like a stupid question (at least it feels kind of stupid having to ask it), but clarification would be helpful.

The link you provided indicates that I have to hack the registry. I have read that phrase many times on this site but for a non-techie this sounds a little scary. Is there any other way.

Thanx again.

Interesting - I hadn't seen it. I just came across the WAP thing accidentally, myself. Do you know if it makes any difference which site you use? It seems like the site you gave has me automatically logged in using my regular browser cookies, while the WAP site does not. Since I'm not using it for email, I almost prefer without the cookies, just in case the cookie expires or someone else logs into Y! on my machine. No surprises.

If you wish to browse from the PPC, you can do it while it is connected in the cradle or by a cable to a desktop with both ActiveSync and a net connection.

The technique that was initially described is done via the desktop using IE, and the PDA does not have to be connected at the time. It's basically just adding some info to be synchronized at your next sync.

My mistake, I overlooked this  . But kati42 is right, you can use the ActiveSync pass-through feature.

Point taken. My opinion is that "hacking" the registry is worth it only if you'd like to have those colourful little icons. There still is another way to add Favorites item. Just make a shortcut on your desktop that point to the webpage, then copy this shortcut into the folder /Windows/Favorites on your PPC (I'm not sure of exact folder name, but it's inside /Windows/). Any shortcut that you put into the folder will show up in Favorites in PIE.

If you guys liked that Yahoo! tip, maybe you'll like this even more. This way you don't have to sign in everytime. "http://pg1.yahoo.com/raw?dp=login&src=home&login=XXXXX&passwd=PPPPPP"
your login name goes where the x's are and your password goes where the p's are. Please let me know if this works out for everyone.

Actually it doesn't matter... no matter where you start, it will lead you to this site. And even if yo enter the wap site... it will still retain your cookies once you enter your information into this site's user name and password fields.

Unless, what you're experiencing is the WAP site redirecting you to a different URL everytime, then new cookies will have to be issued to you and you will anly end up being automatically logged in if you happen to be redirected to a URL which yo have already entered your User Name and password in.
