Just purchased Axim 5 from Dell after having used iPAQ handheld (Pocket PC 2000) for years. I interview people for a living, and rely on the recording functionality of the Pocket PC. iPAQ allowed me to record endlessly using Notes program recorder while saving to my storage card (1 GB hard drive in expansion slot). When configuring Axim to store Note files, I direct it to store to files at "CF Card if available," (exactly how I configured the iPAQ) which of course is available. However, the blasted Axim refuses to recognize the CF Card, and stores the recording in main memory. After 10 minutes of recording, I blow out my main memory, and the recording action stops.

What's up with that? I don't necessarily want to purchase additional software to do what I assumed I could do all along (record interviews of 3 hours) when I upgraded to the Axim 5. Are there any solutions out there? Thanks for your help.

Fungo Squiggly:

I have an Axim and my choices for storage are "Storage card 1 (if available)" and "Main memory." When I choose to save to storage card 1, my recording is stored in the Axim's built-in storage. I don't see any way to select either my SD or CF card.

Aye, there's the rub. It's not doing what it says it should be doing. Surely, somebody takes issue with that? OR has anybody figured out how to get it to work the way we THINK it should work? OR has MicroSoft erred in reconfiguring Pocket PC 2002 from Pocket PC 2000  ? Or has the Evil Empire intended this, in order that I must now purchase their newly released off the shelf recording program  ? Or am I a git for expecting something to work like I think it should work 8O ?

To put it another way, (1) I don't think "main memory" is a "storage card if available" when I have either or both a storage card / cf card / hard drive in the cf card slot and an SD card in the SD card slot, and (2) if my iPAQ could do it with Pocket PC 2000, why won't my Axim do it with Pocket PC 2002?

Off topic. If you want to be making 30 minute voice recordings, you would do well to look into Zavorine's NoteM product:

Thanks Sunnyone and Sullivanpt for your replies. Upon review, I realized I probably should have posted this in the Dell discussion area; I have duplicated my request there. There might be more comprehensive discussion over there as well. Sullivanpt: I'll check out your link -- thanks!

Sullivanpt or anybody:

Is there another location to download the MP3 recorder spoken of, other than
http://www.zavorine.com/wince?

This location's bandwidth is already consumed. Thanks.

See this thread: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6334

Not exactly your issue, but close. The fix may work for you...

Well, I reviewed the thread, and it confirms I AM a git. Most of it went right over my teenytiny head. Which means I am not competent to go into any registries anywhere and change seating assignments (except at my own wedding, I suppose).

And NoteM

Produces a much higher quality recording

Lets you select default storage location (Including CF and SD Cards)

Recordings take up less space

Just assign NoteM to your record button and then , when in NoteM go to tools, options buttons, and check disable all

Hey all --
Thanks for the tips and pointers. I've finally got NoteM, and it looks like it will give me about 2 1/2 hours of recording time. Now for the field trial...
