Hey, I opened up my axim x5 basic and took some photos. I also described the various chip inscriptions. Check it out.

Oh! That's just plain morbid!

Any insights to the d-pad and why it's had so many problems?

I just gotta know,,,,,,, were you able to put it back togeather successfully ? And did it still work ????? And if so maybe you should consider starting your own Axim repair business since Dell has stated THEY WILL NOT REPAIR BROKEN AXIMs !!!!!!!

That sounds really odd coming from Dell... Does that also cover malfunctions that happen within the first year?

Where did you get this information?

Ekkie:

Sorry , guess I should have give a little more detail. From a official response from Rollie The Dell moderator of the Dell technical support board. If Axim malfunctions during warranty period Dell will REPLACE the device , not repair it. No problem there. But if you happen to drop your Axim and break it (Screen , case or whatever) and it's not a warranty problem you have to buy a new Axim. Dell offers no repair or replacement part service for the Axim.........

Terry,

It's too early to be conclusive. By definition every Axim unit will be in warranty for most of this year. It's possible Dell hasn't set up a spare parts program/repair mechanism just yet.

Well, that is good and bad. Of course if you have an issue you caused, you can forget about a simple repair. Those have typically been somewhat expensive. Relative to the cost of the PPC, though, not outrageous.

The good side, is if you have a manufacturer problem, you'll be getting a new unit, not a refurb (someone else's problem).

Interesting, since after the first 30 days supposedly they DO replace your unit with a refurbished one if there's something wrong.

Well, this all started on the Dell board with a post from someone who had broken the screen on his Axim and was told by Dell, well sorry we do not fix them. I wrote Rollie R (Dell board moderator ) and got reply confirming no repair , no parts. OK, in the case of a broken screen I can maybe understand that at price Dell is selling Axim at might not be cost effective to pay 2-300$ to replace screen. But what if you lose one of the littlew rubber feet on the back or your Axim and want to replace it ??? What if the cover over the backup battery is lost ????? What if the little scroll thingie breaks ????? You buy a new Axim to get replacement part ??????

Speaking of rubber feet...one of mine fell off today (on my Axim, of course). Should I send it back :D

Okay, it has the MediaQ 1132 chip. Which has USB host functionality... so why can't we use the Axim as a USB host? GRR! That's unfortunate. That, and the fact it only supports 1-bit SD... not 4-bit. Not to mention it slows down everything because nobody optimizes for MediaQ...

My suggestion, if you are not happy with the unit send it back to dell.
Other than that, the i/o path is 1 bit wide, the memory bus is 4 bits.

There will always be something better out there, I researched this purchase better than when I purchsed the ipaq, and realized the limitations of the sd slot. I purcheased it anyway, I know exactly what I want from my pocket pc NOW, and those are the decisions I based my purchase on.

Good luck
