You hold down either the inner or outer two buttons (inner i think but I could be wrong) that are located to the left and right of hte d-pad. Then, take the stylus and push and hold in the reset button at the bottom till you see teh screen kinda fade away...

If you have the permament pim thing checked, your contacts and stuff will restore themselves. If you don't, they will be erased along with everything else not in the iPaq File Store.

Yup. Think of a hard-reset as restoring your iPaq software to "brand new" condition, with no owner information / software / etc.

If you have your PIM information synched with Outlook, I wouldn't worry about losing it on your PPC. It'll resynch once you connect to ActiveStink.

Keep in mind that those programs you installed previously are still registered on your desktop/laptop that you used to install your programs. So all you have to do is invoke the "Add / Remove Programs" option and select which programs you'd like to install.

Forgot to mention that data stored in the File Store or in removable media such as SD cards will still be there. Of course if you installed any programs on these, there's no guarantee they will work without a re-install since many programs install DLLs into the Windows directory and such.

Oh and BTW, the hard-reset is performed with the OUTER buttons combined with the reset button (not the INNER buttons).

On my iPAQ 3870, it's the outer buttons (Calendar and iTask). I just confirmed this (by looking in my iPAQ 3800 Reference, not empirically :-)). While holding the buttons, push the reset button and wait for 5 seconds.

Steve

P.S. Interestingly, the reference also mentions sliding the On/Off door at the bottom of the iPAQ. I think they left the instructions in for the 3100/3600/3700 series iPAQs. :?
