View Full Version : PDA memory, why so little?

I've been wondering. With all the increases in storage cards (CF, SD, et.) why are PDA's still in the 64MB range?

It would seem to me that the PDA manufacturers could simple embed a 256MB or 512MB memory card right in the PDA. Would it consume more power? Sure. If we're willing to pay for more RAM, I'de bet we're willing to live with a slightly thicker battery/PDA. The cards are all so thin, I don't think they would add all that much to the thickness.

I just don't understand why we are choosing amoung 32, 48, & 64MB PDA's?

Any thoughts :?:

this is the PocketPC 2002 addressing limit.
The future Pocket PC OS may support more memory.

PPC RAM is expensive. If you look at the HP1910 and V35, they're both $300 devices and they both share one thing in common, they both drastically cut corners on memory in order to lower costs.

There are services that will install extra RAM memory for you, but yes, those who have done this do report less battery performance.

Not to mention the fact that your average corporate exec (hi end pda target market like HP 5455) isn't gonna be carrying around 100 MP3's with him to work...

I second that...rebember that unlike me (spoiled highschooler) most ppc users are business men who use Pocket Informant...not media player

Let me expand on this a bit: unlike flash memory, internal Pocket PC memory is nonvolatile low-power SDRAM. It's much faster than flash. However, it's also much more expensive to put into compact packaging.

speaking of businessman, my father uses his 5450 to play most of his beatles album on the way to work, and i think he got more than 100 songs in it, to be frank he uses windows media more than pocket informant, at least that what he show me....
