You should be fine. The 3900 uses a standard LCD backlight, as far as I can tell. Not sure what its rated life is, though.

Has anyone here ever heard of a PDA backlight dieing? I haven't...

I would think the touchscreen would die long before the backlight...

Did you ahve a carePaq? Did the replace the entire unit or just the screen? Can you repace just the backlight or say hack it to put in a brighter one (on like the 3800 series)?

Yes, many Casio E-200 backlights fail. Although to address your question, the fluorescent tube itself is probably fine; part of the control circuitry burned out in the E-200. I had it happen to two of my E-200s, but others have gone through more than that. A backlight-related issue was the primary reason I got rid of my fourth E-200 and now have a Toshiba e740. :)

So it can happen, but it's uncommon. A friend leaves his iPAQ 3950 on full bright in the cradle just about all day and has had no problems. I'm sure this will cause the backlight to fail earlier, but he'll probably replace the Pocket PC before that happens.

Yeah, I my 3850 has had its backlight on in the cradle, full brightness every single night for a year. Then, it sees about 2 hours of use on various settings through the day.
