I find it frustrating though that none of the three major digital wallet vendors (Ilium, DeveloperOne, Two Peaks) offer import/export functionality to move from one product to another. How far would Microsoft Money have gotten if it weren't able to import Quicken data? I chatted with one of the above vendors about this issue, and he said the problem was that there was no formal arrangement for the data - the import would work for some cards, and not for other. We need an eWallet standard for storing data! It's hard to move away from one digital wallet to try out another one if you have to hand-code all your data again... 8O <br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/ewpkss1a.gif" /> <br /><br />"Now you can have all your important information in a format that's secure, easy to access, centralized and portable wherever you want it! Collect and keep all your important info, including:<br /><br />• New detail fields for important extra info <br />• Icons and card colors now on all handhelds<br />• New AutoPass feature fills in usernames and passwords on web pages for you (Windows PC only) <br />• More live URLs <br />• Live phone numbers (if you have a phone-enabled handheld) "

I have been looking for/trying out some of the wallet programs that are available and I agree that it is very time consuming to input all my existing data then move on to the next application.

One question that I have about all these wallet apps. How hard is it really to break into the data? What type of encryption is used other than my password protecting the file. If were to lose my pocket pc (god forbid), could someone after a little time get access to all my personal information. Of course I use the crappy M$ password, but I am sure that can be broken also.

I hope one day I will be able to make a purchase or pay for anything with my pocket pc. (I can dream, can't I?)

I've been using 3.0 for the last week or so and it's pretty solid. I don't see too many differences between 3.0 and the previous version, but I'm only using it for basic functions such as storing my passwords and account numbers. As for backing up the data, I simply syncing it to my desktop (pro version required for that, I think) and I'm all set. It will also backup fine using an application like PocketBackup from Sprite. The "wallet" is just a file that is stored in your my documents folder. It back sup like everything else.

You hit it on the head. I don't want to reinput my data again. The program that I used for storing passwords etc when i was on palm had a feature to export it as a note with commas delimiting it. I could then pull it right into excel to make edits faster. Since moving to PPC, I have been using that same spreadsheet as a password protected sheet. I am not quite satisified with the security of this, but I have about 200 entries and don't particularly feel like reentering them all.

One vendor simply needs to export data to an xml standard, and support import of xml files. Every other vendor could follow.

The question I have is that by doing this they make it easier for customers to switch to another product. Why would they want to?

Jason -- that's why you start out with the best to begin with and upgrade to each new version as they come out! EWallet from Ilium is the best (and no, I'm not related to them in any way shape or form, other than I buy software from them.)

I'm a CodeWallet Pro user right now, but I really want to switch to FlexWallet - the UI is just plain beautiful! The password screen uses BIG buttons, something I've wanted CodeWallet to have for a long time. And it takes you into the wallet after you enter the code - CodeWallet forces you to click the wee OK button. :?

I have used e-wallet since version 1 for the HPC (back in the days of my Sharp Mobilon 4500) and I use it every day for a LOT of information.

My single complaint about this program (and I'm pretty sure it applies to the others) is that you cannot have mulitple levels of folders with items in them.

I started out keeping all this information in Outline format (on my Sharp Zaurus ZR-5800 :o ) and am really disappointed that no one has developed a solution that allows multiple levels of hierarchy in the tree.

I spoke with Ilium about this a year or so ago and they said it was on their wish list and would likely be in the next release but I guess it is more complex than it appears.

First, I would like to thank those responsible for the givaways. I was one of those lucky enough to win a free version of Ewallet. I was using an older version of Ewallet, but didn't want to pay to upgrade so I was very happy to be selected.

It is more convenient for entering data, with more (and better organized) fields. I also like the new icon view better than the tree view. Still, I use it like my real wallet: i.e. I keep it closed and not much goes in or out. I have used it a few times over the past week or so, but to be honest, I didn't gain much with the upgrade. I use a Casio E-125 and don't have wireless capability, so many of the features like the live url's don't do me much good. Probably a good investment for high-end end users though.

I also agree with Jason that reentering data every time you try a new product is tiresome, but from a security standpoint it seems reasonable to have a different wallet file format than your competitors. That way, even if someone found an easy way to crack the encryption for one piece of software, the others would still be secure. Having a standard import/export format would probably be more secure and more workable.

Do any of the ewallet vendors offer just a simple list form, like a basic ListPro list, but with encryption? I don't want to format everything like a card, and I don't necessarily want the numbers displayed in big letters. I prefer a basic list of records - that way, most of the time the numbers I need are visible on the list selection screen and I don't even have to open a card.

Thanks,

RickK

I was one of the lucky winners to win a copy of eWallet 3.0. At first I had a problem with the software but I downloaded a new copy and everything works fine. I like the autopass feature it very useful when you need to connect to web sites with username and passwords. This is a great piece of software...

I use pro so i can enter the data on my desktop and it syncs with the PPC, smart.

ewallet is by far my fav bit of software. uses 128bit RC4 encryption so all pretty secure and its got my life in it. so i make sure I back it up.

Damn fine app, and when new versions come out its happy to read the file from the previous version.

I use flex-wallet pro, but I'm not sure how much longer I will use it. It handles synchronization on the file level, meaning you will lose data if you update data on your desktop and on your PPC because one of the files will overright the other one. No merging nothing.

And I agree about the import/export thing. A simple, flat XML structure of &lt;record name="" field="" field="" /> would do fine. Since we're talking about PPCs over Palms and we're supposed to be able to do more with PPCs, an export feature would be good should someone or some smart vendor ever build a utility that lets you run reports on the data kept in your wallet.

I'm thinking about trying Mobi-Password for its desktop browser integration. Or building my own based on MS .NET CF and SQL Server PPC.

You want HanDBase 3.0. Its encryption is field based, so you could have the credit card name, expiration date and other things visible but encrypt the number. Of course, you have to create the database. www.ddhsoftware.com - or there may be a banner ad at the top of this forum. I've been using it almost 2 years now - fantastic product.

I've tried to use each of the wallet programs but I found myself transcribing data out of Outlook into these programs. Way too time consuming. I also found that their format was not flexible enough. I have contact information for my clients that include network configurations along with credit card information and security codes. I need to have this information in one area and synced back to the desktop. Which for me meant syncing with Outlook. I don't want to open another program in order to pull client data. I should be able to do this right from the contact window in outlook.

Well guess what I can and I can share the encrypted data with other people. Well as long as they use PGP and I have their Public Key. PGP has a CE version of their software that allows me to encrypt any editable text on the Pocket PC with the push of a button. It is a two step process to encrypt or decrypt text within the "Notes" tab in a contact but now I have the ultimate in encryption. All my data is encrypted in AES256. You have your choice of Algorithms locally for conventional encryption (IDEA, AES128, AES192, AES256, CAST5 and TripleDES). If you purchase the desktop version (which I did) you can encrypt and decrypt your data within Outlook. Send and receive encrypted emails. It goes on and on...

This is the flexiblity I needed.

The Note card in eWallet allows plain text entry. You can have pages of info so if you just want a list I'd use that.

Yup, they're all like that. Luckily, it has never been an issue for me because I'm the only one accessing my wallet - when I'm out with my Pocket PC, I use it, get home, sync.
