Hi,

First I managed to get the Microsoft Media player to stop working, so I did a hard reset and reinstalled all my software.. no luck!. Tried again and this time it seemed to work...

Now a couple of days later I find that the Media Player works but WORD and EXCEL, VOICE RECORDER, NOTES, etc are all missing in action!!!!!!

Either I'm very unlucky or one of the programs has corrupted a file.. is there a way of finding out if a ROM file/dll has been replaced by a RAM file/dll of the same name which is of older vintage?

I never had these problems with my old iPaq 3650 - although as I didn't like to use the CF sleeve there wasn't much that would fit in the RAM...

Thoughts.

Do you have Pocket Plus installed? I have heard that causes a problem with WMP on the Axim. No clue on your other software. does tapping on pexcel.exe in \windows\ work?

Haven't had a problem with programs like Word, WMP, etc. not working and I would think that a hard reset would clear any problems you're having. Only problems I've had are hardware related, d-pad and missing ROM storage area, which have both been fixed with the replacement unit. I don't think it's possible to overwrite one of the ROM files by accident, the OS wouldn't even let me move the Bliss theme to my SD card.

But the probs with pocket plus and the axim have nothing to do with the issues mentioned above. The pocket plus issues were related to the today add-in not displaying correct readings.

The issue of WMP breaking has happened to me twice. In my case it was due to the installation of another app breaking WMP. The 2 apps I've seen that break it is OzBar and Pocket Casino. They both install fine and work, but they break WMP 8.5.

Sounds like the apps breaking is related to the above issue. The only way to really tell which app is breaking things is to do a hard reset and after each install of additional software check these other apps. Since getting my Siemens SX56 I've had to do this with each app to make sure it works without breaking the OS.

My bad. Had to do with NIC settings. http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=61290&highlight=sure#61290

Just for Sh*ts and Giggles....

Hey PJE, do you have pocket plus installed? if so, try turning off the "close button" feature of it and see if your apps work again.

If I select pxl.exe in the \windows\ directory it gets as far as drawing the scroll bars with the pie chart wait icon which is not animating, and then the machine hangs...

...and YES the last piece of software I installed was the Pocket Plus demo...

...I also tried the Ozbar demo prior to frying WMP the first time!

Things are starting to fall into place. But unless an uninstall fixes it I'll have to hard reset and reinstall everything :(

Does anyone know how to save my Reader authorization so I don't continue to use up my allowable authorizations? I plan to do a full backup after the cold boot and Microsoft Reader authorization process so I have a known start point which will keep a single authorization.

PJE

PS. Anyone interested in a HP-48GX program stay away from the ZVC Pocket HP-48GX on Handango amongst others. It is merely a company trying to sell the free GNU Emu48CE for $12.50. I'm trying to get a refund at the moment. (Ed a warning on the front page would be nice - it's never nice when people are being taken for a ride). The Pocket HP 15C program on the other hand is EXCELLENT!

I uninstalled Pocket Plus (I was only using it for the repeating alarms as I own full copies of MultiIE2 and Battery Pack 2003 and use WisBar). And everything is now back to normal.

What a relief, as all my apps are on two PCs and are installed in three places on my device.

I know how to restore a Reader activation. In fact, I even posted it yesterday in a thread that you posted to. Do you have automatic follow-up notifications turned off?

Anyway, check out can anyone activate MS reader? (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6586&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=9).

I guess you didn't need my Reader activation tip then. :-) Anyway, you might copy those files just in case.

But now I'm confused about your situation. Why would you have applications installed in three places on your device? Do you have them in RAM, Flash ROM and a storage card, or RAM and two storage cards? If so, I'm curious why.

I had indeed installed programmes in the RAM, Built-In Storage and also a couple of games on a CF card. The main issue is that I've been using two PCs to do this and so all the install files are split between them. I'll have to get myself organized and move them to my main PC...

Ahhhh, I see the light. When you said "...all my apps are on two PCs and are installed in three places on my device", I thought you meant you installed all of your applications in three places (in other words, you had three copies of each application on your device).

Now I realize you just meant that you installed various applications in one of three places. That certainly makes a lot more sense. :-) In fact, I have applications installed in four places on my iPAQ 3870 -- RAM, the iPAQ File Store, a CF card (Pocket CoPilot GPS) and an SD card.

I have all of my installation programs (for my PC and Pocket PC) on an 80 GB external Firewire hard disk, in subdirectories named for the class of the program (Games, Productivity, Multimedia, etc.), so those are pretty well organized. Large hard disks rock. :-)

I came to use my Axim this morning and the problem has reoccurred...

I'm thinking it's something to do with the reading of the My Document directory...

I'm not sure if I installed the Tillanosoft tGetFile.dll and whether this is the issue.

Thoughts anyone?

I don't think tGetFile.dll was intended for PPC2k2 devices. Can you uninstall it?

I don't think it was installed - I was just considering installing it.

I think after saving my MS Reader activation data (thanks Steve for the info) I'm going to cold boot and start again. I'm going to start with my main apps and do full backups at each stage. Then if I experience problems I can move back to the point where the problem started and skip the problem app.

Well, keep us posted, I'd like to know which app it turns out to be when you figure it out

Good luck!

Hi All,

It seems my pain has been purely self inflicted - and I've been blaming everything that moved....

It seems that the software in the Axim doesn't like the number of files on the 256MB CF card. I have a Mazingo account and had loaded 1000's of html files into Mazingo and MazingoDVP direcories on the CF Card. When a program started that looked for files on the machine it would pitch a fit at these directories and either go into a near infinate loop or look like it was locked up - when the program 'locked up' it could be simply restarted by pulling out the CF card!.

Does anyone know whether these directories can be exluded from file searches? I would still like a 'My Documents' folder on this device, which would hold a few movies/MP3s etc... The Mazingo App still handled all these files OK. It was the other programs that started to struggle.

Thoughts.

If you have a "My Documents" folder on the CF card, make sure the file: ignore_my_docs is not present (at the root of the CF card). If it is there delete it. Sync Mazingo to a folder that is not in "My Documents".

Try that...

Thanks Steve, that seems to have fixed it... Although I've only now got 2 applications installed :(

I'm getting to be quite expert at reloading software.

Thanks Ed.

At the time you wrote the article I had a iPaq 3650 which I was using without CF so the information was filed in my mental round storage canister...

I think when I got similar effects from two sources I assumed they had the same (or similar) cause! Not so.

Thanks for everyone's input. Hopefully I can get on and enjoy my Axim without my wife thinking of it as the other woman due to the amount of time I was spending on it...
