Hi everybody...
A min ago I downloaded Divx in my Axim...with thoughts of being able to watch DVD films as some people do....If I don't remember wrong, somebody here succeeded to compress "Minority Report" down to 160 mb...

However I downloaded "matrix Reloaded teaser" from pocketmatrix but Divx couldn't show it good...freezed scenes and blurry rectangulars...I made me feel bad

Moreover I wanted to delete this .avi file from my documents....but couldn't do that...says "Access is denied...Make sure your mobile device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type"

Help me please...

Thankx...
Barkin

You might find that Divx is minimised rather than closed and still has the file open. The "X" in the top right doesn't actually close an application - a curious PPC quirk.

Many application will close apps properly but the easiest way to sort this out for now would be a soft-reset. (Don't worry about losing what you've installed - it's much like a reboot on a PC.)

Thanks Fred...

Instead of soft reset, I reopen Divx and didn't close from X but from File then Exit...After that I could delete the file...

Do you have any idea about playing video?....which software is better?...my Axim is 400 mhz version so I think it should show videos smoothly...shouldn't it?

I use PocketTV to play MPEG1 files on my Jornada 568. Chosing the encoding settings to get optimal playback required a bit of thought but I get reasonable quality full screen (320x240 hlding the device sideways) and an average movie in 500MB or so. Here (http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd/)'s a good place to start.

It's certainly not that simple. I mean, it depends on what bitrate you use, what sound quality, what size, and even what program. Pocket TV Enterprise will get you another 3-4 fps. Like any other time working with encoding video, the answer is trial and error until you find what works for you personally. Or if you don't want to, then go to places that serve up ready made videos like pocketmovies.net.

You're not going to get full landscape 320x240, 500 bit, mp3 sound, and still have 24 fps. It'll take some give and take in different areas. Also, try starting off by using the default windows encoding and player. It runs pretty smoothly and has a good file size.

Come on, give a real link to PocketMovies (http://pocketmovies.net). Who wants to copy and paste? :-) But thanks for the reference nonetheless.

There's also PocketRocketFX (http://www.pocketrocketfx.com) for content, if you don't mind giving your E-mail address to get links to movies via E-mail.

you should get the new Pocket MVP version....it will handle the Divx 5 codec and should improve playing of Divx files. The older version (still called Pocket Divx) will give you choppy and blocky playback.

Why be picky? None of these players are that large, get them all that way you will be prepared for anything

I have Pocket TV for MPEG 1 movies, PocketMVP for AVIs, and of course everyone has Windows Media Player. That way if I come across a video or movie, either on the web or via another PPC user, I'm prepared :)

Just my opinion, but why not?

I agree. MPEG1 movies are the most available. You can download a ton of great custom flicks from the PocketMovies site mentioned by Pony99CA and Rirath. PocketMVP is not the app to run MPEG1 flicks, but they do great with MPEG4 AVI clips (as well as MP3 and OGG audio), which IMO can't be beat if you want to customize your own videos (including DVDs). I rarely use Windows Media Player for anything, but it's already installed in your PPC so it's always an option.

I followed the instructions from www.pocketmatrix.com and ripped Spiderman in a Divx 4.12 AVI file. The movie is around 2 hours and took up 200MB on my CF card. It's slightly blocky, but no skipped frames or choppy playback. The file was 320x176 with mono sound. I basically just followed the instructions. Has anyone tried it with stereo sound? The FAQ says that the playback may not be as good. BTW, I am using Pocket Divx Player.

There is a thread in another forum that discusses these movies with stereo sound that takes up about the same amount of space.

Also, if I rip a DVD using the Divx 5 codec, should this play with no problems using Pocket MVP? I would assume this would give me higher quality (or at least smaller file size) since the compression should be better.

Pocket MVP has no problems playing files encoded with the most recent version of Divx - I just ripped Blade Runner using the DivX 5 codec, and it works great! The limitation is that WMP cannot play anything encoded with a codec newer than 4.12.

Surgical Snack, thanks for the quick response.

Are you encoding the files with mono sound or stereo sound? If stereo sound, what MP3 format at you using? And if stereo, are there any problems playing it on the PPC?

I ask all these questions because I am running a PIII450 machine at home and it takes about 10 hours total to do both the 1st pass and 2nd pass encoding using VirtualDub.

No problem. I live here, thus the quick response. To answer your question, I encode using mono audio. I'm writing this from my Axim at Starbucks, so I don't have access to VirtualDub, but I THINK I encode at 33 mhz. Basically, I just followed the instructions at pocketmatrix/guides. I think I read that there's no point to recording in stereo, but I may be wrong. :)

Hmm, I must be doing something wrong. I just tried encoding a few frames using the Divx 5.02 codec with mono audio, and the video looks terrible compared to Divx 4.12 codec!

Are there some settings I need to set in VirtualDub to get this to work right? Or is there something I need to set on Pocket MVP on my PPC?

Nevermind my previous post.....I was still using PocketDivx...duh....

Brilliant, simply brilliant. :bday:
