Reader KyleC had an idea for a poll, and I thought it would be interesting to see how many "family" people we have on the site.

How about a category, Married (Children grown and gone). Effectively it is like Married (No Children) but it is different.

And, my children use PocketPCs... at least my oldest do. There are now 5 of us in this household that are regular users! Maybe we should post family photos (only if they have a PDA in their hands!)

Oh, and some people call me crazy, some call me productive, I just call it 'big.' I have 6 children. Only the three oldest have a Pocket PC (along with my wife and I)

WOW - I always thought most people here would be a lot younger and single, was I ever wrong. I am happy to see that there are a lot more Turbo Geeks on this site like me! :P - I really dig these polls.

What are you talking about? You're either married or you're not, and you've either got smaller human beings who you consider "children" in your life or you don't. What's so hard about that?

Note that married with child(ren) does not necessarily mean older. I am 23 and we are expecting our second child this summer. No offense to any of you who enjoy the title older, I just wanted to clarify since I do not consider myself old (but who does I guess ;-) ).

Yeah... I'm 30 with no wife and kids...

Do I sense another poll soon asking for age?

What about same-sex partnerships (not that there's anything wrong with that...)? In Vermont, you can be married, outside of Vermont, you're not.

Same-sex couples are not legally allowed to marry. Saying that someone who has been with a same-sex partner for years is just not-married is insensitive. To also infer that since we do not fit-in to your servey that we are not "families" is also unfair. As I have always thought of Pocket PC Thoughts as an all-inclusive site I would have thought that polls would also be.

Now that I'm done being a minority whiner, I do think the results are interesting. :)

Same-sex couples are not legally allowed to marry.

This is an unfortunate truth currently. I think, though, that same-sex couples that would be married if it were "allowed" should just vote "married", as that is the intention. I don't think same-sex couples were specifically excluded, but polling on sexual orientation would probably make people much more sensitive than the one about income.

I think people should go with the spirit of the poll even if the wording isn't exact for them.

Jason, yes it is very simple. You didn't ask, are you married or single. You asked, are you married or not married. So, it is unfair to assume you have a narrow minded view of the world. Instead I will assume you like to conduct surveys with a very narrow focus. Perhaps the next survey could be, are you 32 years old or not 32 years old? :)

I am not married. If you were interested in the fact that I am as close to married as the law will allow, you should have asked a different question. I've stopped trying to fit my family into the options provided.

I apologize for giving you a hard time. As always I am sure you meant well. I love your site. It is the best of the net. I don't even have a Pocket PC right now and I still visit it more than once a day. Keep up the hard work, surveys included.

I'm one of the Pocket PC Thoughts readers legally allowed to marry a woman and did. (And I'm not sure why I'm sharing this but with the above I felt inclined to share what I normally wouldn't think to share.)

Jason, yes it is very simple. You didn't ask, are you married or single. You asked, are you married or not married.

I think it would actually have been more narrow-minded to say "single" than "not married"... To me, that sounds like leaving out same-sex couples as well as heterosexual couples who are living together. With the current wording, you can choose to say "we're basically married, just not in the eyes of the law", and go with the "married" option, or you can choose to say that you are not married, strictly speaking, and vote that way. But if the two options are married or single, couples living together but not married don't fit into either category. So it's kinda a choice of two imperfect options vs. no options in that situation...

It's also very difficult to write completely politically correct anything that won't offend or exclude *somebody*. I think this survey is basically okay on that front. Just my view, of course.

JonnoB

Marriage is a legally defined union between a man and a woman (at least in California). You can call same-sex relationships, heterosexual relationships (live together, etc), and other relationships (think anything possible here) as something else. If the survey was inclusive of all possible combinations of how people live there lives, there may be many (too many) choices. I think Jason asked a simple question that for the most part, fits the majority and is fairly common question to ask... you are married or not, have children or not.

One thing for sure, Pocket PC users come from many different walks of life.

This week we plan to go to an annual Winter Festival gathering. There, those who choose to, will view the traditional holiday foliage and sing songs indicative to their own socio-political and religious feelings of association.
My significant life partner and I will bring various food stuffs catering to the dietary needs of all attending. As each person feels ready, they will be welcome to sit or stand and consume these and other items including a variety of vegetarian, non-dairy, kosher, and other culturally and dietary concious items that are both healthy and with taste.

HOLY SH#&!!!!!!!
I'm making my self sick with this politically correct BS I'm making up.

Get a freakin' grip people. Just because we have different ways of saying or doing things, doesn't mean that others are wrong.

To hell with political correctness. PC is simply censorship light. If that's what you want, China and other communist and socialist countries will welcome you with open arms.

Enough of my soapbox.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Given that this is not a courtroom, I think same-sex couples can call their relationships a marriage if they so choose. Besides, if you want people to vote according to their local laws, that could skew the results. What about same-sex couples from countries/states that recognize such unions? They are permitted to vote "married", but people in other areas are not?

I may be misunderstanding, but I think the point of the poll was to determine more the quantity of people in a household, potentially for cross-referencing with the results from the household income poll. If this is the case, then certainly it doesn't matter for the purposes of the poll whether the marriage is legally valid.

I have no idea the intention of the poll. But I don't have the energy (or the will) to debate the political, religious, and social impact of 'marriage.' Perhaps this is one of those topics we should let die now. I am thinking too much about social issues and not enough about what I want out of my PDA. 8O

I think the POLL was just to have fun ;) Anyway, Jason, I'de pay you big bucks to get a database that crosslists al the POLL information with user dbase information. That baby would be like some kind of golden egg for marketeers ;-)

My eyes are rolling back in my head so far I can see my grey matter bubbling and frothing from reading this thread....bleh.

Political correctness can ruin anything it touches - honestly, it never occurred to me for a second when I created this (and likely not to KyleC either when he proposed the questions) that people could possibly have a problem with the question.

I didn't mean to offend anyone with the question, but just like the "country" question, some of you are over-sensitive and apparently go looking for people to skewer when they "do it wrong".

Thread locked, poll closed. No more polls on "personal" matters since it seems I can't seem to do them "right". :?
