I use PocketBackup from http://www.spritesoftware.com and have had no problems with it so far

second on Sprite's Pocket Backup. This is the only backup solution that fixes the inbox issue and dup start menu item issues. Likewise, it's 50% faster then the built-in backup feature and can by compressed and encrypted. Other features include sceduled backups and low battery backups so that you don't lose any data.

What are the Inbox and Duplicate Start Menu Item issues?

I've seen duplicates in the Menus settings applet, but I'm not sure if that's what that second issue refers to.

you are correct, using the built in backup app you will end up with duplicate icons. When you hard reset a device certain icons (calendar, inbox, etc..) are put into the start menu by default. Some users move those to the programs folder instead of the start menu. The built in backup app will put all your icons back that you had before the hard rest, but if you had moved calendar to programs, now you will have calendar in programs and on the start menu. It's kind of hard to explain but that's basically the issue. Sprite software fixes this issue so that you don't end up with dups, just one in the location that you wanted it.

now for the inbox issue.....

There is a flaw in the OS when you have additional services (accounts) setup in inbox. After a restore, the backup will recreate the services but all email coming into these additional services (for example a pop account) will actually appear in the activesync folders. You will still receive email but it won't show up in the proper group of folders. Likewise, I believe it won't allow you to delete them either. The workaround from MS is to delete the additional service and recreate it (and soft reset). Then magically all the emails show up in the correct folders again. Sprite software has fixed this issue so that during the restore the email goes back into the correct folders.

Keep in mind that Ipaq 3900/5000 series devices already have Sprite's backup utility built in. HP/Compaq bout the license to put the software into their devices. They renamed it to Ipaq Backup but it's the same software.
