Ericsson and AT&T Wireless today completed the first WCDMA/UMTS call
in a live network environment in the Americas. With initial packet
data speeds up to 384 kbps, the call demonstrates true 3G
capabilities, which include quick downloads of such
bandwidth-demanding applications as E-mail with attachments and
streaming audio and video.

There is that "up to" caveat again. I'd be happy to see half that 384kbs in real world delivery.

Gotta love press releases, eh? :)

So far, at least in the US, the big hope is cdma2000 1xEV-DO. Field tests show a blazing 2.4Mbps speed. In reality the current estimates are about 384kbps sustained, which in my opinion would be awesome. Still going to take 2-5 years to see that come though, in my opinion...
