Don Ellingsworth recently went to Disney's EPCOT Center and saw an interesting kiosk. It was an iPAQ. It had some sort of software so patrons could use the touch screen in a wine/food booth.

I'm going to WDW next week, so I'll be on the lookout for these things. :damn mouse: I understand that all of WDW is covered by a WiFi network, but I don't have any portable equipment to try while I'm there. Knowing WDW, it's probably got some weird id and encryption on it anyway. :?

On a similar note, when I was at Universal Studios Orlando in September, 2001 (that's right, I flew the week after 9/11  ), they were using iPaq's as 'restaurant pagers' to let people know when their tables were ready. You could browse some Universal Studios type information while you waited, but otherwise it may as well have been a coaster.

That is the sorriest looking Kiosk I have EVER seen.

And what's with the roll of tape and two slices of pie. Is this a bake sale or something?

Yes, if I'm correct in assuming that the photo was taken during the annual Food & Wine Festival. Disney makes extensive use of iPaqs as portable, wireless point-of-sale terminals. This is so that they can use cash registers in places that don't normally have cash registers.

EPCOT is where all of the countries are represented. I guess some smaller countries cannot afford nice fancy kiosks like Dell has in the mall, so, some plywood, white paint, an iPAQ and red duct tape and viola! Kiosk!

Sorry I could not reply to this post sooner, but I was having account issues...

In any case, I think I might have been misleading in when I submitted this photo. The pocket pc is actually being used by the Disney employees as some sort of cash register during the annual Food & Wine Festival. However, I don't think it was wireless as I was running netstumbler on my own Pocket PC and did not find any networks in that area. I did however find two open networks near the "globe".

If they are not broadcasting SSID, you won't see them with Ministumbler...
