<a href="http://www.handy-fashions.com/e-cap.html">http://www.handy-fashions.com/e-cap.html</a><br /><br />Okay, you all know how much I like my <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2342">Scott eVEST™ </a> with all its pockets, and I've even mentioned how I might like to own a pair of the <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3451">Levi Mobile Dockers</a> pants with their built-in radiation shield. However, when a reader pointed out this latest form of high-tech clothing, even I had to shrug in disbelief.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/adrian/mobilehat.jpg" /><br /><br />Handy-Fashions.com is selling (among other items) their new MobileCap. The purpose of this "attractive" piece of clothing is to supposedly shield the mobile phone user's noggin from any radiation emitted from the phone. Even though researchers have yet to prove any harmful effects from mobile phone radiation, Handy-Fashions touts the MobileCap as "the perfect link between up to date fashion and highly effective microwave protection." And, in case you're interested, they also sell a waistcoat (vest) and scarf which also incorporate real silver shielding. <br /><br />Sorry, but in my mind, these items go a bit beyond simply geekiness.<br /><br />And, while we're at it, let's be clear on some of the terminology I use when describing these kinds of technologies:<br /><br />Nerd: Someone who creates technologies, useful and not-so-useful, just for technology's sake<br />Geek: Someone who loves and embraces useful and not-so-useful technologies, "just because he/she can"<br />Dork: Someone who is so technophobic that he/she can't tell a useful technology from a hole in the ground<br /><br />So, I have two questions:<br />• Would you ever consider wearing one of these MobileCaps?<br />• Are my definitions correct?

I'm only buying one if it also shields me from alien thought control.

Now THAT'S deep. If a dork wears a MobileCap in the woods and nobody is there to see him, is he still a dork?

I would hope anyone who wears THAT hat would only do it in the privacy of their own home or they deserve whatever they get.

Does Wearing This Make Me Look Like a Dork?

Short Answer: Yes!
Long Answer: Yes, and not in that "but one could argue (insert something non-hat) makes you look like a dork too" sorta way.

By time you think you need one of these, wouldn't it have already affected your mind?

St63: those are lcd shuttered 3D goggles? Just a little obvious anywhere than a theatre.

I think this must be one of those hoax useless Japanese inventions they showed once on the tube. For example they had a toilet plunger with a handle that you could attach to the ceiling of the train for a person to hold on to, or a roll of toilet paper attached to your hat so you could wipe your nose etc... and countless others. I bet you, someone made a bet that he could sell these at Comdex to a dork posing as a geek and make a pile of money. I propose that anyone wearing this contraption, even for demonstration purposes, should be lynched publicly, sentenced to listen to my mother’s friend Alice talk for hours about absolutely nothing in her soprano voice and be given a Palm and told to peck I AM A DORK until the memory is full.

And, while we're at it, let's be clear on some of the terminology I use when describing these kinds of technologies:

Nerd: Someone who creates technologies, useful and not-so-useful, just for technology's sake
Geek: Someone who loves and embraces useful and not-so-useful technologies, "just because he/she can"
Dork: Someone who is so technophobic that he/she can't tell a useful technology from a hole in the ground

So, I have two questions:
• Would you ever consider wearing one of these MobileCaps?
• Are my definitions correct?
No, I wouldn't consider wearing those.

As for your definitions, they aren't how I use them, but that's irrelevant. As long as people know what you mean by them, that's good enough, and I like your differentiation.

I use "nerd" and "geek" interchangeably, and "dork" just means anybody who looks weird in a geeky way.

Wouldn't listening to your mom's friend and typing be a bit difficult after being lynched? :-D

That's what I do. I don't see the need to spend money on a hat like this. Aluminum foil is much cheaper - a $1.69 roll will last months. :silly:

It also keeps aliens from scanning my brain. :new-alien:

That's too funny Ed. :D

I think I have forund a new defence against alien invasion. If we were to simply remove the tin foil from Ed's head and allow the aliens to scan his brain, I'm sure it would scare them the hell out of our corner of the universe. They would be sure to tell their friends to stay away. Those humans are way to far out for us. It will take us centuries to straighten out that brood. :D

I sent this one in. I found it the other day on some other site. Geez, at least give credit where credit is due.

Any way, at least you're making fun of it like it should be made fun of. It ranks right up there with pet rocks and those tin foil cellphone antenna boosters.

The wildest thing about these hats is the price that they're asking. What idiot would pay that much for one of these?

Wait, what am I saying, they're making them, so obviously SOMEONE believes them.

It also looks as if you can turn the flap up and fisten it using a snap. So you only look like a dork when you're making a phone call...
