Dale Coffing has put together a huge number of screen shots that shows off the work that HP has done with the software on the HP 5450. It's worth a look to see how deeply they've integrated their on-board hardware with the Pocket PC OS. I'm itching to try one of these, but I can't see adopting it as my primary Pocket PC until they integrate a cell phone. I'm a one device man. :D

Mine's on order. I think it looks like a a killer device if only they could cram WiFi,GSM/GPRS, and Bluetooth, I would be content to not upgrade for a while. :D

This things looks and sounds KILLER! A little steep pricewise for me at the moment, but maybe one day  Hopefully by then it'll have everything entropy mentioned in it as well + higher res. OLED 4" display and 128 or 256MB RAM. Oh yeah, can't forget a type II cf slot for a microdrive... but by then I bet we'll see 2 or 3GB SD cards too :D

I too am waiting to get my hands on this "almost better than sliced bread" device, to communicate with my T68i (via Bluetooth) and my WiFi WAN at the office.

Sorry to hear you are a "one device kind of person" Jason. I tried it with the Kyocera 6035 and just got tired of lugging all that weight around everywhere. I just don't think that "big beautiful screen and small phone formfactor" will ever work (I don't think it's physically possible...unless you can somehow project the small phone screen as a virtual hologram...hum?)

Now I can unload my PC card sled, Air Card, Air Card monthly service, WiFi PC Card and all those extra external sled batteries (all for my 3870) and replace them with this "all in one device" (well almost, except for the GSM phone). Finally, one bill, one service for all my wireless voice and data needs (also a former Plam VII and VIIx user). Just sounds too simple.

Jason,

If this is your level of activity when taking some time off, TAKE MORE TIME OFF!

Man! You have been a posting machine.

How are you doing with the XDA? I noticed your post that you are now a one device man. Any drawbacks? I keep coming back to the 12 bit screen. I bought a Casio brick over an Ipaq years ago over that.

I agree with Jason though..I am also looking for one device that I can use as a Cell Phone & PocketPC (must be Tri-band GSM..dual band is a waste..) and for that price 128 RAM should be standard.

Does anyone know what happened to the Tri-band GSM accessary posted on HP's web site (for 3900 series). They kept on saying it'll be available in Aug. 02 then Oct. 02 and now I do not find it at al......

I did take time off - all day Saturday and Sunday. :D That's a lot of time off from the site for me!

Yeah, I love it! I really wish it had WiFi built in, and more RAM, but overall I'm thrilled with the hardware. It works great on Fido (http://www.fido.ca), and the 12-bit colour limitation doesn't bug me that much. Any good photo viewing application has 12-bit optimization, so I only ever notice it on photos viewed through Pocket Internet Explorer, and even then it's not enough to bug me. :-)

Well then, aside from the Rumored Dell PPC PE coming out, is anyone else aware of any other more immediate PPC PE's coming out?

Competition makes the price go down and makes Dan a happy guy.

As with their desktops, they offer a quality product at reasonable prices but it's not enough for me. This HP really seems to set the standard for a high end PPC and is enough to make any self respecting geek get happy (even happier at a lower price.) I def would have liked to see 128mb for that price. Oddly enough, I would never touch an HP desktop (or Compaq for that matter) even though I think they have done a fine job at the ppc forefront. At least didn;t debut this at $750 like the 3970.

I'm one of the 85 votes (What PDA would you buy, poll) for pda/phone combinations and I don't even have a phone edition PPC. I have the Toshiba from Sprint. I used to have a Jornada 565 and there is no way I'm coming back to a disconected device. My company has a contract with Sprint and I can't wait for them to offer PPC PE. I will wait until then to get my new device. I don't care the brand really.

Jason, where is the IR port on the XDA and is it in a place that would make it possible to use the IR modem?

One of the main things holding me back from a new purchase that does not support CF is the loss of my treasured CF modem. True, the PPCPhoneEdition could potentially eliminate the need to use a CF modem to ever connect, but it would be nice when travelling on business and sitting in my hotel room, to be able to dial-up into my RAS and not have to spend EXPENSIVE GPRS data. If I can't use the CF modem with a PPCPE, perhaps I could use the IR modem?

Well, it will probably be the same brand, or more to the point, an XDA rebranded for Sprint. When I first saw the XDA the Microsoft rep SWORE there would be a CDMA version coming not long after the GSM version and Sprint has shown a real need to compete in the data services arena so I'm thinking that as soon as that's available Sprint will have one (and plus, is it just me, or does the Thera just scream "PLACEHOLDER" to anyone else?)

I have ordered this lovely device as well and i cant wait to get my hands on it. I am refreshing my h3850 as we speak, i am selling it to a guy towmorow :( snif snif. that leaves me with no pocket pc until the new ipaq is available. Anyone knows a specific date?? i mean official not rumors.

I have thought on waitting for the GSM enabled one and be a one device man but i dont feel it will work flawlessly. Of course the senario that i thought will work since i the new ipaq supports the headset profile:) you can just have the ipaq and a tiny bluetooth headset in you pocket to make phone calls (but i guess it will be 2 devices again).

Anyway i droped the GSM enabled ipaq idea since i will love running a wifi network at home with my ipaq :)

I also am waiting for a phone like this Jason, so when do you think the first one will be available cause i am getting really confused i have been a daily reader of the site for a a year and 1/2 since my last pockewt pc broke. I haven't bought a new one while waiting for a dream pocket pc phone. So when is HP going to comply are there any plans. I heard something awhile ago about something being released in january maybe that was a sleeve anyways does anyone know when i can buy a pocket pc again.....

I am also waiting for a PPC PE, ideally it would be an iPaq. Studying the screens over at Dale's, HP sure is adding value. Using my iPaq as remote control sounds great. You should see my living room, I need 3 controls to work all the things. Vibrating alarm is something I have always missed. Also, having a 1st gen iPaq, I have a great bunch of accesories, and its great not having to reinvest in things I like having when I update. Yeah I would love 128 Mb but I will just pop in a SD card and be done with it.

I cannot decide whether I would prefer phone+bluetooth or phone+wifi. I am almost sure they will offer 2 but not 3, as per the internal pics the new iPaq only has space for 2 wireless modules. Chances are, it will be phone+bluetooth - the bluetooth module is very small, bt is a one chip technology, and it has a tiny internal battery. The wifi module is quite larger and has the external antenna and I guess connectors for higher voltage/amperage. Thus, the phone module can use the same space, just the longer antenna. I guess it was not released at the same time due to the fact that it emits more radiation, thus more risk of interference, harder design and more shielding req'd. And the new series had to be out for xmas.

All this are guesses of course. I don't think we'll see a phone-wifi-bt solution ever, its quite much to ask. But if we get a phone-bt unit, which I am sure we will, I wonder how it will work with a wifi sdio card in - utter wireless flexibility - my wireless lan at home and work, gprs out in the field, and bt for the cool toys (read, wireless headset).

Whatever, sorry for the rant there. I am also in for an all-in-one device, and I think the capabilities on a PPC PE has no comparison. The future, think the software that can be done with it!! (I am a developer)

As usual, THANKS Jason for the site.

Best wishes,

Juan

Upper left corner, pointed a little to the left. IR modem would work easily.

Very doubtful it will hit the UK before January - based on the 3870 and 3970 releases...

More accurate now to say you're a 2-device or 3-device man, I think (i.e. don't forget the (BT) headset) :) Illegal in most states to talk w/o a handsfree while driving? Well, I guess you can also use car-mounted solutions...

So can anyone clear up, does the 5450 support BT headset profile?

Duncan

st63z,

The BT Headset-AG profile is supported by the 5450. The HP FAQ is inaccurate. The manual and the BT qualification site both state that the Hedaset profile is implemented.

Doubts cleared up now? :)

They were great pictures, and just confirmed that I want my next PDA to be a 5450.

One downside is that they got rid of the treble control, and the bass control went from 13 settings to 5. I guess that's not a big deal, as I've never used it. :-)

Regarding one-piece vs. two-piece, I guess I'm a hybrid. I think the ideal would be one of two scenarios.

1. A wireless Pocket PC (for data, not voice) and a good cell phone. That way I could use my Pocket PC to browse the Net "anywhere" without any complications, and I'd still have a full-featured cell phone.

2. A Pocket PC with Bluetooth and a Bluetooth-enabled SmartPhone. That way I could browse the Net "anywhere" without my Pocket PC, but if I wanted the bigger screen of my Pocket PC, I could initiate a Bluetooth connection to the SmartPhone.

I just don't believe that you can have a great small phone and still have an adequate screen (if you call Pocket PC screens "adequate") in one device.

Dale's photos showed that headsets were supported, but he also said the software wasn't final. At the end of this is the relevant screen.
