<a href="http://www.dell.com/ca/en/dhs/products/series_pda_snp.htm">http://www.dell.com/ca/en/dhs/products/series_pda_snp.htm</a> <br /><br />They're a day late, but Dell Canada is now offering the Axim X5. What I wonder about though is the $50 US rebate that Dell.com is offering - I can't seem to find it on the Dell Canada Web site. The 400 Mhz Axim X5 is selling for $549 CND (about $349 US), and the 300 Mhz model is $408 (about $264 US). Pretty good pricing, but the lack of the rebate is hurting here - I've send an email to Dell's Canadian PR firm to get a confirmation on this rebate issue.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/axim_x5_series_advanced.jpg" />

According to my Dell Sales Rep you still get the $80 CDN off as a rebate - but like you said I want too want to see it on paper before I commit. -

Update yes it is $80 rebate but you have to mail it in.. which brings the price down to about $470 CDN which is what Toshiba e310 sells for these days in Canada. The deal is sweet. ViewSonic v35 sells for $479. Choices, choices, choices.

I followed the link you supplied Jason, and added a 300Mhz model to my cart. Then went to checkout, and there is a tab at the top that says: Shopping Cart, and another that says: Detailed View. If you click the detailed view you'll see a line entry like the following:

Mail-In Rebate Promotion

$80 OFF Mail-in Rebate
RBTAXIM-[009-4060]

Looks like the rebate is there! :D

Aha! Good to know - thanks guys.

Makes you wonder though why they wouldn't have the info on the rebate front and center? People might add it to their cart more easily if it was $80 cheaper... :D

Jason, don't you have a partner link with Dell?? I noticed it with the US site, nothing for us Canucks?

That would be too obvious and too easy and large companies seldom are obvious and easy to understand, but then again I am a cynic or a realist depending on your point of view. I work for one of these mammoths – I see it everyday.

This morning I ordered an Axim X5 (400MHz version) by phone from Dell Canada. The total price I was quoted was $556 Canadian incl. GST. This made no sense to me as the dell.ca site quotes $549 (Axim) + $25 (shipping) + GST, which amounts to a total of $614. So I asked the Sales Rep to break it down. He told me the Axim was $520 excl. GST and the shipping was no-charge. With GST this comes to the aforementioned $556. In effect, I am paying $440 for the Axim after the $80 mail-in rebate. Perhaps Dell made a mistake to my benefit, and there is a current advantage to ordering by phone (until they become aware of the error).
BTW, I was told to expect 10-15 business days before I receive the device.

They probably only gave you a USB travel sync cable instead of the full cradle. That may be the reason for the $30 difference and I would verify that with them in case you really want a cradle. It seems phone sales is providing free shipping which is not available online.
One thing I noted in the other forum is there seems to be an error on the Canadian site and it is offering the 3-yr exchange warranty as a no cost option. This is normally a $150 option, so if you'd prefer to have that and don't mind being forced to have the cradle and pay for shipping (on the 400 mhz version you can't remove the cradle to save the $30, whereas you can with the 300 mhz and still have the warranty error) you're saving about $95.

Any Canadians get that 10% off that all the americans are talking about?

Well, I just ordered the 300Mhz unit from Dell... There's no 10% available for Canadians, in fact the codes are completely different three numbers a dash and then three or four more numbers. He assured me that there's no such thing for Canadians. He was going to charge me $25 shipping, but I told him I was told yesterday I could get it free. He then put me on hold for a minute and came back and agreed to the free shipping. He said that that they won't actually ship until the end of November and that they haven't even started making them yet. Also mentioned that it should be here some time before mid-December, possibly sooner...

sweetpete, you're right. My order did not include the cradle. I changed the order to include the cradle and the total came to...you guessed it - $549 + tax. Shipping is free for phone orders after the Sales Rep puts you on hold and "speaks to the supervisor". For web orders there is no way to avoid the $25 shipping costs.
BTW, I doubt Dell Canada will commit to the "free" 3 yr warranty on the dell.ca web site. They'll end up offering you to take it (and pay) or leave it.

I just realised that I had been charged $29 for the cradle which I did not want. I just got them to cancel it after fifteen minutes on the phone and a lot of phone tag. For some reason he kept pushing me to cancel the order and order from the web? Hopefully they'll fix this. I won't think about it until I can check the order status online or see what I'm charged on my VISA.

I agree, not worth it for me, I'd rather have free shipping. Not to mention, would I really want it for three years :D

No, I don't seem to be able to do anything with Dell.ca...thanks for thinking of me though. :-)

I don't disagree about wanting to keep it. We're gadget freaks and I don't think these last even 1-2 yrs for most
I thought I'd point it out in case someone wanted to take advantage of it. After all, I know my boss had hist original Palm for something like 4 yrs before he upgraded. Some people are happy with what the device is capable of doing and will continue to use it as long as it'll last.

On a side note, I think they would be legally bound to giving you the deal here in Canada as it's an advertised feature with no price attached. They may try and take it back later, but if you fight back, they'd have to give in. I've read in the past that this isn't necessarily true in the US as companies have cancelled orders where big $ mistakes were made.

Sweetpete, I understand why he kept the old palm for 4 years.....they haven't changed much in that long :)

I know where you're coming from. I'm getting my wife a PPC too. I've finally converted her from her old handspring. I'm leaning towards the Viewsonic just becuase of it's weight. She needs something that can be easily carried along with our little one and all her toys.

The Canadian $80 rebate form is now available online at http://www.dell.com/downloads/ca/dell/Nov_Axim_rebate_form_en.pdf. It is currently valid until December 31, 2002.

No 10% off, for me but I did get on the spot $80 rebate so with GST and shipping I am getting my 400MHz X5 for $507.18 CDN. I am happy with that - still half the price of my 3850 when I bought it.

From the pictures this device looks as big and thick as a Philips Nino. I hope you guys are happy if it turns out to be that. I'll wait for a review before ordering one. Congrats to all of you who ordered it, make sure to come back and review your experiences! :D

szamot, how the heck did you manage to get $80 instant rebate? I tried to convince my sales rep to give me that when I ordered mine yesterday, but it was totally out of the question. Tell us, what's the trick?

The guy I talked to at Dell said they have a way of doing it. I asked if this was because we were a corporate client and he said no. I just called him to ask if he wants extra business, had to leave a voice mail, if he does not object I will give you his direct number if that's fine with Thoughts. Less work is a good thing. Now I am going to see if there is 10% off for being their preferred client, who has been forgotten.

Please let me know if you can, I have to cancel my order, they screwed it up sort of. They charged me for a cradle. I phoned customer service, and he said after I receive it he will credit me for the cradle. But I don't really want the cradle any way, I don't need the hassle. Not to mention I wouldn't mind getting the rebate right away. You should have got free shipping as well...

Still wondering about how to get 10% off :D

I thought when I looked earlier this week they had "smaller" leather case for the Axim. Now all I see is the executive type case that won't let you put it into your pocket.

This is what has kept me from ordering so far. I like to carry my HP567 naked with the cover. But since the Axim doesn't come with a cover I would need a case small enough to put into my pocket.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
-Eric

I'm sure that same company that is making those steel or aluminum (forgot which) screen covers for the E-310 and such will introduce a model for the Dell as well, apparently they have one for almost anything. Not to mention that there will probably be plenty of third party cases to go around. Is the screen really so weak as to necessitate a cover?
