I've resisted the temptation to buy the normal DVD and have held out for this Platinum Series Extended Edition. It's being released on November 12th, and contains an amazing four DVDs: discs one and two contain the feature, with an added 30 minutes of extra footage 8O, and discs three and four are crammed full of special features. This is what the DVD medium was made for! Amazon is making this $25.99 package even sweeter though - $10 mail in rebate, and a $10.50 admission for the Two Towers movie due in December. Your net cost after all is said and done? $5.49. 8O Oh to live in the US!

Of course, if you're really hardcore, you won't order anything less than this collectors version. Check out those bookends! My Canadian brethren can also order the Platinum package from Amazon.ca or the collectors edition. And did I mention that Spiderman rocks too? (affiliate links all around)

I dont think its off topic at all

Personally, I hope that once all of them come out, they will make a special edition megapack with all of them :bday:

How annoyed was I when I found out there was a special edition after buying the 'normal' edition.
Now I have to shell out further bucks and seeing that Oz doesn't jump on the 'rebate wagon' anywhere near the likes of our North American friends.... :(
Oh to be stuck on an island....

Yup, it is great to live in the USA :)

Although, I'm not sure, I loved the movie but it was already pretty long...30 more minutes?!?!?

hmmmm...

The Spider-Man DVD did rock by the way!

That's why I got the "regular" version for free from Blockbuster. :D

Actually, *you* could have bought the original DVD for not much more (at least in the US):

Circuit City sold the original DVD new for only $15.99 (both widescreen and fullscreen versions). In that DVD, is/was a coupon for a $5 rebate off the extended version to be released in November, making the original DVD price actually $10.99. Given that I was going to at least rent the original DVD if I didn't buy it, the renatal would have cost me around $3.50 for a couple of days, making the actual cost of the standard version DVD $7.49!

Added to that the low Amazon cost of $25.99 for the extended version, minus the free movie ticket (money I would of been spending anyway) it all adds up to a great deal: For right around $30 (US), you get the theatrical release DVD, the extended version DVD, and a movie ticket to the Two Towers......sweeeet.

Don't most movie theaters refuse passes, coupons and, gift certificates for the first week or so of a new release? Of course, this is a good deal even without the free tickets, and personally I'll see it a couple times in the theater anyway.

I plan on holding off until 2004/2005. I'll buy the cheap ones now (well, not $5 after goofy deals) and then buy some $100 mega-collector set when they are all done.

OK, took the plunge.

LOTR and SW2 are on the way. It's the first time I've ordered from Amazon.ca. Actually, it's also the first time I've ordered DVD's online. The price seemed relatively good actually. I've looked before, but found the prices too high. I guess they've come down. Plus I didn't pay anything for shipping so that made a difference I'm sure.

I purchased the original DVD and much of the extras material was repeated multiple times.

Okay, I'm dense. Just ordered this (thanks Jason, this is too near to my heart to be off topic!). But I don't see where I get the mail in rebate or the Two Towers discount. Where are these goodies?

Ya being in Vancouver we lose some of those US perks, but I'm still looking forward to this collectors edition. I guess A&B Sound next week for some more shopping after today again. I picked up the new U2 limited edition cd and bonus dvd and also a sweet digital optical audio cable for my dvd to receiver. I'm ready for movies baby!

I'm with Ed on this one. I'll get all of the 'extended' versions at once - call around a group of friends and settle down for a day of middle-earth. 3 hours each = 9 hours or so! :D

I take it that the first two DVDs are two separate versions of the film? One is the original and the second the extended? Or is 1/2 the movie on the first and the rest on the second? I don't remember ever seeing a movie that was divided like this on DVD. Interesting.

No, the film is divided over two DVD's. From the reviews I have read, this is not as awful as it sounds, the cut is done in a very convenient place (mentioned where, I dont remember) and the movie is so long, the rest is not unwelcomed. I know it is rather unconventional, but (from what I remember reading) it was necesary not due to the length of the film, but more to the quantity of DTS soundtracks included with it (something like 10).

The vlaue of this package is VERY high for a fan, it is just PACKED with material and most of the extras are (according to what I read) not in the previous release many of us bought (I didnt, been waiting for this 4 CD set all the time)

Let's hope not in this case. According to Amazon's site, the free movie pass is only good from December 18 (opening day) to December 31.

Just so you know in order to qualify for the $10 rebate you also must purchase the theatrical release DVD, FYI.

AND the $59 extended version, not the $25 extended version.....that gets a $5 rebate.

My wife will love this collection and so we waited after hearing about it early this year. The break is appreciated since the movie is really long including now the extra 30 minutes. Another week to go...

Heh heh - I've been to a lot of the sites where the film was made (being a NZer thats a bonus aye?! :D ) I actually have a friend who bumped into Peter Jackson on the street coincidently my mate happened to have a Poster of the film with him, which Mr Jackson was happy to sign..!!

Amazon Canada is selling the set for $CA 37.95.

Also, I hear Toronto is THE ONLY Nth American exhibition of the props from the film. I hope to head down there and take a look.

Nice being a Kiwi in Toronto.. ;-)
