Both have 400 mHZ Xscale CPUs, but now have the ability to underclock the CPU to 100 mHZ for power saving. The GX will come with 128 MB of RAM - nice! Yes, I was just relaying that the current U.S. e550G found in CompUSA stores can actually underclock to 200 MHz.

This can be found under Settings, System tab, Processor icon.

That looks like the same remote unit that works with the current e570/Maestro. I have it, it works pretty well.

Anyone know if thsi will be offered in the US and if so, when? I've got a brother who's comping at the bit to move form Palm to PocketPC and I've been trying to get him to wait a bit for some of the "next generation" ones to come out. This one would probably be one he's be interested in.

OK, I take no responsibility for anyone messing up any expensive equipment they might have with this suggestion BUT...

wouldn't it be possible to take the current Genio ROM and flash one of these Japanese units? Then reinstall the underclocking software and your set.

I remember it worked with Casio units at one time...

Did it come with the device or did you purchase it seperately?

I agree completely. It's the same way with their cars. When I was into dumping $$$ into my Civic Si, all the really neat stuff that I wanted was only available in Japan. Unfortunately for me, there are several US importers that are happy to get the items for you, but they like to charge big $$$'s. ;)

Has anyone tried the e570 remote with the e550g? There are button settings in the media player that point to something called remote?
Anyone with ideas?

Why would anyone want to underclock to 100? I'll wait until software and EUU3 is released and see if they is any optimization for the Xscale chip. Maybe then the 100 wouldn't be that bad.

Currently the NYC 5th Avenue store has a deal on the e550g, $50 trade in for PDA(any CE in any condition, I traded in a IPAQ3630 with a dropped screen), $50 instant savings, $50 Manufacturers rebate. 599 - 150 = Not bad price.

I bought the remote from Audiovox (it was on their accessories page, I don't think it's there now though). It works perfectly with the e550G. :)

Hi

A few comments:

- If you are worried aboiut smashing the screen they have also released a hard cover: http://www.genio-e.com/pda/products/acc.htm

- The current e550G only has underclocking to 200 but it looks like this will have down to 100.

- Older Casio machines in Japan also had an inline remote and it has been available separately for the Genio for a while now.

- It's not true Japan always gets the good stuff first. It took a long time to get iPAQs out here and they are always behind the US. Actually even the first Pocket PC took months to get here after release in the US. Microsoft are getting better but software upgrades e.g. Active Synch and WMP also take longer. As for MS Reader there's no chance we can get a Japanese version at the moment and the English version when it could be downloaded does not work on Japanese machines. Another example, forget Stinger or Pocket PC Phone edition, I don't think we'll be seeing those over here unfortunately. There are a lot of products which come out in the US/Europe which we don't see over here, although the reverse is also true.

By the way, I'm planning on heading over to Vegas for Comdex from Japan for just 3.5 days so I'd love to hear if there are any Pocket PC events going on :-)

I take that back--I just checked the Audiovox site, and the remote is back, and listed as being for the e550G too: "EM1032 - Earphone Headset with One Button Remote for Maestro & Genio e550G Pocket PCs".

Andrew, any chance you could provide the answer to my long quest? I've been trying to find out if the PC card expansion sled for the e550G will accept/work with the Sierra Air Card 750--the gps/gprs pc card for T-Mobile. Audiovox can't give me that information. Since you are in Japan, is that something you know or can find out?

I'm afraid I don't have any idea about what cards in the US work with the jacket and I doubt Toshiba Japan do either. The reseller over there is probably the only one who can provide that info. I did see this realted post on these forums though: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3502

Can you not go into a shop and test it? I would help testing if I could but I don't have the jacket and couldn't get hold of the card myself.

Sorry I can't be of much help.

A post on Brighthand claims it "apparently will not work": http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=5b0dadc4448c695de83b8f8ce7d332f4&threadid=63609

Too bad this new unit doesn't have a transflective screen. It would make this unit REALLY REALLY attractive. I've already seen the thread at Brighthand about the DUST which sounds really bad on these units.

Presumably for extra power savings. If you're only using Pocket Word or something, you might not need 400 MHz, but you might want longer battery life.

Yes, that "Japan always gets the good stuff first" comment was a sweeping generalization. The reason for Japan getting the Toshiba Pocket PC first and the U.S. getting the iPAQ first seems obvious -- Toshiba is a Japanese company, Compaq (HP) is a U.S. company. Where was the Loox released first? Europe, I think. Where is Fujitsu-Siemens located -- Japan/Germany.

That said, there are stores where you can go to buy Japanese goods in the U.S. "Fresh Gear" (or maybe "Tech Live") on Tech TV had a story about them. I even think I saw a Loox in the store they visited.

It looks like they took a pic of a 550 and photoshop'd on some headphones to tie us over until the release. Too bad it will only be released in Japan!
