I was reading the advertisement for the v35 on viewsonic's website (http://www.viewsonic.com/pdf/pocketpc.pdf). And as I was reading the technical specs, it mentioned the OS installed was... "Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 Premium Edition." What does this mean? Is that the X-Scale optimized version only available to OEMS through Microsoft? Or what?

No such luck. All Premium Edition means is that all the options "are built-in" as opposed to the 2002 upgrade (for older 3600 Ipaq's) which was missing such things as Terminal Server client and Word spell check. As I understand it, those "add-ons" could be loaded separately into the device's RAM.

According to Derek Brown (as per the current Brighthand thread), there will be no specific X-Scale optimizations only to keep compatibility will current SA and other mobile devices such as Smart Phones.

In other words, these new 400/300mhz devices will continue to "underperform" for quite awhile longer.

Really makes me think....do I really want to get rid of my Jornada 568 which in alot of ways performs much better than X-Scale and has great battery life? I don't think so!

HTH!

And remember that the battery life improvements aren't as much as you might think...

Microsoft made a Standard Edition that lacked some of the software, but no one ever used it - all Pocket PCs are "premium" devices.

Well - except for Compaq who offered the 'Professional' (standard) edition as an upgrade to the 3600 series iPAQs. There is at least one manuafcturer (can't for the life of me remember what they are called) who are/have been making Pocket PCs using the stripped down version with tailored add-ons for specialist applications. They were featured in a UK magazine a while back...
