<a href="http://www.zayotech.com/">http://www.zayotech.com/</a><br /><br />Racer-X sends in this link to a new Pocket PC 2002. It should be available by October 15 and <a href="http://www.mobileplanet.com/vendor.asp?vendor_name=ZAY&src=IVZAY">you can pre-order it now from Mobile Planet</a>. Here are the specs:<br /><br />• $550 - Order between 10/1/02 and 12/31/02 and get a $50 rebate though- available at ZayoTech's site through the Special Offer link.<br />• 400MHz X-Scale<br />• Pocket PC 2002<br />• 3.5 inch reflective 16 bit screen with "Exclusive architecture speeds graphics"<br />• SD/MMC slot, optional CF sleeve (See image in the comments)<br />• FastIR, SlowIR. <i>(Now, the iPAQ has always had FIR in the hardware but it was never implemented. Not sure if that was a driver or PPC 2K2 issue)</i><br />• 4.9" L x 2.9"W x 0.5"D <i>(By comparison, the Palm M515 is 4.5" x 3.1" x .5", so this is a bit longer, tad narrower)</i><br />• 4.9 oz. <i>(Identical to the M515)</i><br />• Li-Ion battery<br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2002/20020918-zayo.jpg" /><br /><br />Very cool. While typing this note, I found out that <a href="http://www.dalecoffing.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=89348">Dale "I have every Pocket PC months before you even hear about it" Coffing is readying a review for it</a>, which should be live on Thursday.&lt;!><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2002/20020918-zayosleeve.jpg" />

Clarinet Systems actually makes a replacement FIR driver for the 36xx and 37xx series iPAQs. It works very well except you can't copy anything to the Storage Card through it. The driver appears to disable Storage card access across ActiveSync. Also at $20 it's a pretty limited market.

I think you have to understand that, for the time being, any PPC going for ultraslim is going to have to omit built in CF support simply because the size of a slot that could take the card would add to much bulk.

I think it's healthy as long as both the dual slot high end market AND the lower end slimmer market develop.

I've been playing with the Zayo Pocket PC for a while, now. I didn't think it was possible, but this tiny PPC has completely replaced my Toshiba! For those of you that would like to know more about this new PDA, Julie and I should have a joint review up sometime next week.

Next week is going to be interesting! :D

I'll see how it performs... I'm supposed to get the original ASUS MyPal A 600 version and the throttling looks promising... 100MHz to 400MHz with a draw of .8V to 1.8V on the CPU.

OK, just a little historical perspective here...this could very well be a great PPC with no problems whatsoever but let's remember that this is EXACTLY how the whole Amigo mess started.

No name company releases a product that looks just great, gets decent to good reviews, and that's where everything goes to hell.

Lesson: Be Careful about jumping on the bandwagon of a product from an unproven company no matter how good it looks.

Thomas, you're right, but behind the Zayo is Asus. And that's *not* a no-name brand that usually has quality products. But I don't know about Customer Service for Zayo branded products of course. But it hardly can be any worse than Sony CS. :( I guess time will tell.

UGH! That CF sleeve is ugly! Surely they could have designed a better looking sleeve.

But the unit itself is pretty slick. While I was in Hong Kong last July, the distributor of the ZAYO in HK was generous enough to let me play with the ZAYO. Its pretty slim, as slim as a Clie T615, plus the lights on the buttons is a nice touch, feels quite sturdy when being held.

After living with my e550g's 4" screen for over two weeks, I could NEVER go back to a small 3.5" screen again.

I don't see why. Specially because according to the pictures here:

the Zayo is thicker than the e310 and in my evaluation the same thicknes as the e740 that includes SD and CF

Who in the he^* is Zayo?

I understand that the machine itself is made by Asus, but Who runs their tech? If they didn't design or manufacture the machine (Asus did), how good will their tech support be? That said, how good will their ongoing support be (Updates, etc.)

I agree with the previous statement. This is how all those folks got Amigo'ed.

Be careful out there, kids!

Look before you leap!

But many people have actually tried the Zayo, unlike the hype for the Amigo.

Not exactly on-topic, but I was considering snagging a second-hand Amigo as my first Pocket PC (built-in PCMCIA slot and very low budget is why) and I noticed these comments about it... what's the story? :?

The Fast IR of this stuff is surely fully implemented. I've transferrd a 3.45 MB file from my notebook to the device via fast IR and it just took about 53 seconds to complete.
