NotesCat is a small, free! tool that puts the category index onto the Pocket PC, and allows you to view Notes by Category. It does not change the note-taker/note-viewer app; you still use the built-in notes.exe. What it does is provide an indexed view to your notes - you can list them by category on the Pocket PC. When you tap&hold on a particular note, the notes.exe app is brought up to view that particular note.

Check it out. With about 1000 notes on my PPC, it gives me the organization I always wanted. Maybe it will work for you too.

install image: (6mb msi)

limitations/bugs/features:

- The MSI is a whopping 6MB !! That's what I get with VS.NET
- Tested with Outlook XP + ActiveSync 3.5 + Windows XP; also with Outlook2003 + AS v3.7 + WinXP; other combinations have not been tested. This app has not been tested with ActiveSync 3.1 or Outlook versions before XP.
- Requires .NET Framework v1.1 on the PC (see windowsupdate.com) ; this is for the desktop portion of this app that creates the index.
- Requires .NET Compact Framework on PPC - this is for the NotesCat app. See below for the URL.
- does not sync notes in subfolders
- tested only on iPaq 3650 (builds for other processors are included in the MSI)
- not tested with notes belonging to multiple categories
- not tested with multi-byte charsets in subject
- cannot modify the category of the note on the PPC (but you can modify notes within outlook as usual on the desktop).
- does not do "conditional" sync of categories or filtering; all categories of notes get synched to the device
- I don't know anything about sync-ing to storage cards. This app shouldn't affect that.
- requires the use of ActiveSync file synchronization to transfer the index

Update:
