Penbase Visual Designer is a one-stop rapid development environment for generating Java-based enterprise-ready mobile solutions that synchronize seamlessly with corporate databases, enabling real-time delivery, processing and update of mission-critical data wherever and whenever required.
This latest edition of Penbase Visual Designer enables developers to generate powerful applications for Palm OS and Pocket PC in a single development project, thereby dramatically reducing time to market and eliminating versioning issues in multi-platform contexts.
Complementary to Penbase Engine™ 1.0, the high-power mobile relational database engine, and Penbase SyncML Server™ 1.0, the wireless synchronization solution, Penbase Visual Designer generates mobile applications that incorporate both the Penbase Engine and Penbase SyncML Server components, ready to be deployed over mobile devices.
Penbase Visual Designer’s integrated application editor enables even the most inexperienced developers to quickly create powerful applications featuring genuine relational database functions by simple drag-and-drop of the Penbase Visual Designer tools.
Built-in connectors provide connectivity with any ODBC-compliant corporate data source and 4D. Optional connectors enable direct connectivity with most popular solutions including SAP, Oracle, Sybase and DB2.
Penbase Visual Designer’s also includes a reference target device feature that enables users to take into account all the specific hardware features of the different devices on which the applications run.
As part of the Penbase System, synchronization can be carried out locally, via the PDA cradle using standard HotSync™ or ActiveSync™ technologies, or wirelessly over any standard communications protocol such as Internet, GSM, GPRS, Bluetooth, 802.11 or UMTS via Penbase SyncML Server.

Developing applications simultaneously for Palm OS and Pocket PC with Penbase Visual Designer is extremely easy.
On opening a mobile development project, the developer chooses the target reference devices. After having set out the application logic and designed the user interface for one target OS (e.g. Palm OS), the developer uses the Switch Target command to activate the other target OS (e.g. Pocket PC). The only changes to make for the second target OS are the layout of the GUI elements on the screen using the WYSIWYG editor interface.
