<a href="http://store.palm.com/Catalog/Promotions/LOR2.asp">http://store.palm.com/Catalog/Promotions/LOR2.asp</a><br /><br />For $399 you can buy the DVD "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and get a free Palm M515. Of course, you still would need to buy a PDA you could rip the DVD to and watch it on. <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif" /><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2002/20020814-lotr.jpg" />

Wow! $399 for Lord of the Rings? What a bargain!

Palm had better find a way to move the M1xx series before they end up with stockpiles of unwanted inventory. I say...dump them into the sea, they might make a nice artificial reef.

Seems rather fitting. The Lord of Declining Market Share bundles Lord of the Rings.

I wouldn't be as bad if they offered up the Platinum Series Extended Edition Collector's Gift Set instead of the boring old 2 disc version you can get at Walmart for $17. :D

LOL Does anyone know when McDonalds is planning on giving away a Palm with every Happymeal?

Is that the gift set with the full trilogy? I got my Fellowship of the Ring on sale at Best Buy for 15-16 bucks (forgot to bring my 10% coupon), which came w/ some stupid rebate coupon for the gift set...

On a total side note, you can test drive a KIA, and get the dvd for free...

So, where currently is the best, most up to date instructions and software recomendations for ripping a DVD. Of course, these are all DVD's I own....I plan on ripping a couple to my new $12.95 Toshiba 2GB PCMCIA Card (thanks to a heads up from PocketPC Thoughts) to watch on my iPaq during a 10 hour plus flight to Fiji in early September. Or shame on me for even asking such a question? :)

Thanks in advance!

i wish i had more time this week to make some funny parodies of "free palm with purchase of x" or "free x with purchase of a palm" or "free x with pocket pc"...you get the point...

hmm, i'd also like to dig in and see if i can find some metrics on if these marketing efforts work for selling palms or kias.

cheers,

Now if they offered a free m515 if I test drove a KIA, now that'd be a good deal.

Even better if I previewed the LOTR trailer and got a free Kia.

Or better yet..give away a free M515 when you buy Palm stock. :P God knows it needs a boost.

The sad part is, the M515 has more equity and long term value than the company!

Wow, i love how wrong that is. $30 for LOTR?...yeah, if I was buying two. Hopefully people looking at this realize that you can get a Palm 515 for like $380 then go buy LOTR in the store all for the same price. Plus you would get LOTR the same day, instead of waiting for the second shipment from Palm.

I have heard NEO DVD is a great DVD ripper it will take all night but has tons of settings and should work great with just about anything. Then again. I don't know much about things.

DVD ripping really isn't a one click solution. You need to know about the source's aspect ratio, so that the image can be resized and cropped correctly etc. If you want to do it right, check out www.doom9.org
That site has some guides on dvd ripping from A to Z, using different methods. On www.projectmayo.com you will find some guides on how to encode correctly for the pocketpc. I find region2 dvd's easier to rip, because they are the correct framerate. Region1 dvd's aren't 25fps, so you need to do inverse telecine, which takes a long time. Anyway, good luck. You can mail me @ [email protected] if you have some questions. And no, dvd ripping isn't illegal in case someone would start nagging ;)

Well....technically, it is. It's illegal to break the copyright protection on the DVD, and any ripper based on DeCSS is doing just that. I still do it, mind you, so I'm not throwing stones, but you shouldn't think that it's perfectly legal. :-)

Copyright laws are a joke, in the States AND in Europe. Normally the consumer has the right to make a personal copy for himself but it is unclear whether overriding copyright protection to do this is illegal or not. Another thing , IFPI (belgian organisation against piracy www.ifpi.be doesn't know itself what is legal or not. They say that making a personal copy of a CD you bought is perfectly legal. Now let's say that I make a personal copy for myself, keep the copy and sell the original, would that be legal or illegal? IFPI has no idea ;) Really, they were asked that in an interview and they weren't sure, what kind of signal is that to the consumers ?

Anyway, the fact that ripping my own DVD's might be illegal makes it even more exciting ;) Living on the edge etc. ;-p

In 2001, Senator Hollings introduced a draft bill called the "Security Systems Standards and Certification Act" (SSSCA). Many people thought that the bill was so biased towards the media companies that it would never pass the draft stage. But on March 21st, the SSSCA became an official bill under the new name of the "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act" (CBDTPA). This is bad news because it means that there's a real chance that this bill could become a law. (Full text of the CBDTPA.)

Why the CBDTPA is bad for us.
Historically, our country has enjoyed a balance between the rights of copyright holders and the rights of citizens who legally acquire copyrighted works. Recent copyright legislation has eroded that balance to the detriment of consumers. The CBDTPA promises to shift the balance even further by placing more power in the hands of a small number of media companies. We see four major problems with the CBDTPA.

The following LINK (http://www.digitalconsumer.org/cbdtpa/cbdtpa-inf.html) has a vanilla form that this site will send to congress for you. All you have to do is fill out the info and submit it.

My fault.....

We went from LOTR & Palm to petitioning congress. What I should have said was "Let's take this DVD ripping & Gov't petition to a new off topic thread".......

Too late now, as I don't see this thread ever getting back on topic!
