Depends if you think you will really need/want/use the extra features the 3900 series has that your 3835 doesn't have....and if you want to shell out another $650-750.

what extra features????
The screen on the 3900 is supposed to be much better than that of the 3800.
The 3900's also have larger iPAQ File Store ROM's.
X-Scale too - but that is of limited/no benefit right now.
SDIO - meaning the 3900's are the first iPAQ's that can accept non-memory SD cards, like SD-Bluetooth or an SD Camera.

The BIGGEST single reason you should upgrade to the 3900 over the 3800 is the Screen. Simply stated, it's incredible. Easily as bright and vivid as the Sony Clie' NR70. Until you see the two side by side you'll think I'm crazy for saying such a thing - but there is a HUGE difference. The 3900 uses a transflective color screen that features true, deep black levels and offers strong backlighting. Photos, Text, web browsing - everythng looks brighter, crisper and much sharper on the 3900.

Other featured improvements are the 48MB file store area, SDIO compatible SD expansion slot (not just for memory cards), "faster" 400MHz xScale processor. While you won't really see a difference - it's definetely not a drawback in speed (no slower).

I own the H3975 model (bluetooth version) and just purchased a Sony/Ericcson T68M mobile phone (GPRS/GSM through VoiceStream) and I can connect to the phone via Bluetooth for either dial-up access or for slightly faster GPRS connection. For those who have this combination and need help setting it up - just email me and I'll send you a step-by-step page of instructions. email is ([email protected])

If I'm not mistaken, it is only the 3970s that have 48MB of RAM, the 3950s still only have 32MB.

ROM not RAM.

IIRC - aplogies if I'm wrong - the 39xx is the first iPaq set with built-in expansion without having to deal with a clunky sleeve.

No, the 38xx units had SD too. The 39xx is the first unit with a fully functional SDIO slot, though.

:D I upgraded from the 3850 to the 3950 let me tell you that the difference is huge, the 3950 picture quality is awesome to me the best in the market today (I compared it side by side with Casio, Toshiba and 3850) Do not believe what people who do not own the 3950 tell you about it. Once you see the image quality inside and outside (under strong sunlight) that this ipaq has and the increased speed compared to the 3850 you will be very satisfied. When I turned it on and I saw the brightness compared to the 3850 I felt I took a jump into the next century.

There is a problem. The Aircard will register a signal and dial. But you'll get a "Cannot Detect Carrier" message. Have talked with Sierra and Verizon [altered Compaq as well]. S&V acknowledge the issue, say they are working on it but no idea when the fix will be available.

Anyone with this problem who has a work around or suggestion [other than reverting to my 3850]?

I would consider buying the 3950...if it weren't so God damn expensive. $650 for a standalone PDA??? That is INSANE!

Incidentally, I blew my chance to pick one up for $540 direct from Compaq. I placed the order, but decided later to back out because I don't particularly like the iPaq in general. Buyers remorse really sucks.

$540 foo? how did you swing that?

The prices on the 3900's are dropping at a good rate...down almost $50 now.

Someone at Brighthand posted a coupon code (HP20) for Compaq's Small Biz web site. It give you a 20% discount off the price of the 3900 series during checkout. Not bad. But just before my order was about to ship, I backed out of the deal. Now the offer has expired. I kind of regret that decision now. :?

The lowest I've seen on the 3950 is $611. That's still way too expensive for something that offers so little.
