View Full Version : Wes Salmon gets his stinger yanked

Wow. <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif" /> When I heard this news I was completely shocked: HandHeld Media Group (HHMG) has let Wes Salmon go from PDABuzz. They just acquired the site this year from CompanionLink, amidst many promises of keeping the site just like it always was - and now they're going to run the site without the guy who started it and made it the killer PDA community site that it is today. Sheesh. Not cool at all. <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_evil.gif" /><br /><br />I admit that I don't often venture past the opening page of PDABuzz, but I've long admired their vibrant community, and consider it a benchmark that I wanted to strive for. The best community sites all have one thing in common: a person who represents the best of that community, one who guides and shapes the community. That person was Wes, and he did it with style. Now that shaping will be done by the people from HandHeld Media Group (Denny, Rick, and Dave). <br /><br />No offence to those guys at HHMG, but when I picked up the recent "Buyers Guide", I really wasn't impressed. Their "reviews" of Pocket PCs are extremely Palm biased (they said the battery life of ALL Pocket PCs was "abysmal"), and the back page MP3 rant was somewhat entertaining, but very uninformed. Nothing in that magazine made me feel like these guys were trusted experts that I should listen to - almost every article I read was lacking in some way. <br /><br />I can only predict that PDABuzz will turn into the Palm-happy bastion that their magazine is. I think it's a blow to the PDA community in general when "generic" PDA sites like PDABuzz go away. It's important to have enthusiast sites like Thoughts, but ultimately there's a huge role for sites that take a more balanced approach to PDAs and their operating systems. We'll miss ya' Buzz...<br /><br />If you'd like to <a href="http://forums.pdabuzz.net/showthread.php?s=2d3233950256f8ff833740ea046196a2&threadid=40396">discuss this</a> over at PDABuzz, or give Wes a fond farewell, do so. I'm sure he'll be checking out this thread as well. I've also published the entire statements from Wes and HHMG just in case they get changed as this unfolds. &lt;!><br /><br />My time at PDABuzz.com has come to an end <br />Posted by Wes on Wednesday, July 03, 2002 - 3:27 PM PDT<br /><br />"It is with much regret that I post this message, but as of July 5th, 2002, I will no longer be Senior Editor of PDABuzz.com. As many of you know, PDABuzz.com was my creation and has been my full time job since January, 2000 after being acquired by CompanionLink Software in August, 1999, followed by Handheld Media Group in March of 2002. I was informed of my pending release by Handheld Media Group on Friday, June 28th. I was offered the option to regain ownership of the site after 6 months of unpaid employment, however I am unable to accept this offer for financial reasons.<br /><br />In responses to my release, PDABuzz.com has received resignations from all of our volunteer discussion forum moderators. I cannot tell you how much these people have helped me over the years and how much better they made PDABuzz.com as a result. I am truly grateful for their support and hard work. The moderator group has issued a letter to the PDABuzz.com community regarding this situation, which is available here.<br /><br />In closing I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported me and this site since it launched in October of 1998. Without the continued support of our readers, we could have never become one of the most popular and successful PDA websites on the Internet. My time at PDABuzz.com has been an immensely fulfilling life experience, one that will be cherished for many years to come.<br /><br />For the sake of not cluttering up the forums with messages regarding this announcement, please direct any questions or comments to me at my personal website or via email.<br /><br />Farewell and once again, Thank You,<br />Wes Salmon"<br /><br />And here's the Handheld Media Group's posting:<br /><br />"Handheld Media Group Adjustments at PDABuzz.com<br /><br />The world continues to change and we are forced to change with it. With great regret we’ve had to let Wes Salmon, PDABuzz’s Founder and Senior Editor go. We have nothing but admiration for what Wes has done over the years and will do our best to stick to his successful formula…great news, robust and insightful boards…a great community for handheld device users.<br /><br />PDABuzz will now be guided by three very talented and respected editors: Denny Atkin, Rick Broida and Dave Johnson.<br /><br />Through knowledge and expertise in the handheld market as publishers of Handheld Computing magazines and newsletters our editors will strive to bring additional features, product reviews (hardware, software and accessories) and analysis of the market. Over time PDABuzz will present a greater variety and quantity of information for individuals as well as businesses large and small and provide more emphasis on Wireless technologies.<br /><br />PDABuzz will miss the current moderators and look to others among you to help continue the great tradition of the buzz discussion boards. Find out more about Handheld Media Group at About Us and can contact us with questions or comments at [email protected]."

I was wondering why the site has not been updated for a while. Thanks for the update, Jason. Sorry to see Wes go.

The second site I visit (right after Pocket PC Thoughts) has always been PDABuzz. Wes ran a nice balanced PDA site that covered both Pocket PC and Palm (as well as other platforms) fairly, and without bias. Compared to another site that has taken a noticable Palm bias on over the last year, PDABuzz had remained unbiased and a great source of information on PDAs in general and Palms and Pocket PCs specifically.

We'll miss you Wes. We wish you good luck and hope to see your work someplace else soon.

PDABuzz will now be guided by three very talented and respected editors: Denny Atkin, Rick Broida and Dave Johnson.

What a joke.....

With these guys at the helm PDABuzz just became PALMBuzz....

I wish Wes all the luck in the world, he really did have a great site.....

Let's hope Wes starts another PDA site. PDABuzz isn't going to be the same without him there and I'll definitely jump ship to whatever he starts (I hope) in the future.

Absolutely pathetic. One of the foremost PDA web sites is gone forever as far as I am concerned. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Wes and what he has done. Good luck with your future Wes!

It looks like the parent company is very Palm oriented. I guess they're not interested in a site that covers both Palm and Pocket PC in a fair and unbiased manner.

Wow 8O. I can't believe they did that. It's sad sad day for the loyal PDABuzzers. Like Jason I have always kinda had PDABuzz as a benchmark for my site. My site is actually little more like PDABuzz in the fact that I cover the whole range of PDAs, so building a site like PDABuzz has maybe been a little bigger goal for me than for Jason. And Wes was PDABuzz. Like Gene Roddenberry when he was asked how much he knew about Star Trek and his reply - "I am StarTrek". Same way with Wes and PDABuzz. Besy of luck to Wes in his future!

Don't have much time to comment much now, but I wanted to throw out a couple of comments.

1) Wes and I didn't always see eye to eye, but even in our most heated moments he never banned me, so I respect him for that. ;) I have a great deal of respect for him for his building a great site. The layout worked well. The forum software was very good. And the reviews were well written. It and Brighthand were the two best platform-independent sites out there, with Brighthand having a more utilitarian-bias and PDABuzz having a more geek-bias.

2) I don't agree with the conspiracy theorists here who think that this was some underlying plan to convert PDABuzz to a Palm-focused site. I believe that the new owners probably want to keep it multi-platform. What I do think is that they probably bought the site for a song with the intention all along to let Wes go. Why try to build such a large community of your own when you can buy one for cheap? My sympathies to Wes.

This was a business decision, I'd wager.

Which will probably transform PDAbuzz from an ENTHUSIAST, for-the-love-of-PDA's place to a corporate run portal.

I'll stick with people who ain't in it just for the cash.

Ugh....it's hard to believe it's over. Wes was (and still is) such a great guy, and really did have quite the site. PDABuzz became a small part of my day-to-day life, and now it's kinda gone.

Finding a new haunt will be hard, though you guys have a pretty nice site here :) It'll just be a bit hard fitting in at first, I'm sure. I remember when I was still a newbie over there.

Also, Jason, you're welcome to publish the Mods' letter as well, since I'm sure HHMG will yank that ASAP too. Saddest thing I ever had to write over there. Thanks for posting the others too. Wes really did get shafted this time around.

That he be fired or work 6 months WITHOUT pay to regain ownership of the site

ThomasC22

If Wes was willing to work for 6 months without pay they would return ownership of the site to him.

My thought is that they knew he wouldn't be able to do this so they offered in an attempt to soften their image and retain PDABuzz members.

This news does really blow bad.

Any comments on what's going on with the new website owners and Wes would be pure speculation, so I won't bother with that.

I will say this though:

Wes was that website, through and through. I found him the most "balanced" of all the pda-based site owners out there - not in a mental way (grin) but in a fair and objective tact way. Wes could get heated at times, but I've never seen tale of anyone getting booted from the boards who didn't absolutely, positively deserve it (trolls being what they are).

His reviews were short, but told me what I wanted to know about the products.

His commentary was sometimes tongue in cheek, but usually underlaced with a certain respect and "report the news" that I really came to enjoy over the past few years.

He'll be missed, and PDABuzz won't be the same. Already I see signs of things to come - just a few hours ago, someone posted a note in the Sony Clie forum about a software app that handles typing better, and the "new" board managers edited it, saying it was an ad. How they knew it was an outright ad, I dunno, but I didn't see elements of that from Wes. If he deleted posts or edited them, he'd give the benefit of the doubt first.

One reason why I don't participate over at Brighthand much anymore is because of all that crap that went down last year with Steve, the boards, and the instant deletes. I have no respect for that. Wes wasn't like that, even through some tough threads (and I remember reading some), and as the PDABuzz guy, I gave him all the props I could, and it was often one of two or three pda-based sites I'd point people to if they ever had any queries about PDAs.

Wes, you'll be missed, and if you start up another site, let us know. There'll be an instant legion showing up to blow away your servers with traffic.

Good lord! 8O

Sounds like nothing more than a front to take control of the site from Wes. They made him an offer that he had to refuse, in order to cover the real plot.

Shameless....absolutely shameless. :?

I wonder if it's just conincidence that the PDA Buzz forums went down at around midnight... I had just finished writing my own little missive about Wes' departure and clicked "Submit", when I noticed the site was down. Fortunately, I'd copied it to the clipboard, first, but nobody I know can get to the site. Draw your own conclusions...

I've been a member of PDA Buzz since it was started early in 1999, when there were no moderators or anyone else -- it was just Wes getting his site off the ground. I even wrote one of the earliest user reviews of the old Uniden PC100A (http://www.pdabuzz.com/Reviews/Uniden~PC100.html) Palm-size PC. I was never active in the forums, but had come to rely on the site as a source of timely, unbiased news and information. As another poster here said, it was the site I went two just after coming here to Thoughts.

I hope the community will find a way to live on without him, but from what I read there (before the forums died), many of the regulars are planning to leave the site in protest. I'd like to think that Wes would prefer things go on without him, and that the community he worked so hard to build will live on, but I don't see that happening. I think many long-time visitors will not be returning.

Well, there may be problems elsewhere, then. I instant messaged a few friends on other ISPs and they can't get to http://forums.pdabuzz.net, either. (We can all ping it, though.)

I guess with all that's going on over there, I just let my conspiracy theories kick in and assumed the worst. If you were the new management and virtually everyone was shouting out against you, wouldn't you make an effort to silence them?

To PDABuzz Readers, HHMG:

For nearly four years, Wes has run this great site, putting a lot of work and sweat into it, and most importantly, his personality. He created a site and discussion board where everyone felt at home, from the youngest newbie up to the oldest pro. PDABuzz became a strong community. Several thousand (nearly 30,000 now) users who had at least one common interest could come together and share ideas, and even a number of friendships formed.

One by one, us moderators have come together and obtained our ranks because we were hand selected by Wes as folks who could show leadership and responsibilities in his Forum. A lot of us have stuck with this and stayed on because of the bond we've formed with Wes, along with the bonds we've formed with each other and the rest of the PDABuzz community.

We moderators feel that a lot of the site's flavor comes from Wes' personality and style, and without Wes, the site loses a lot of why we were here in the first place. For most of us, Wes was PDABuzz, and vice versa, and we'd never see it any other way.

This is why, as of today, July 3rd, myself and the rest of the PDABuzz Mods are resigning our duties as forum moderators.

We would personally like to thank all of the users and especially Wes for making the site what it is. For us, the decision to leave was both hard and saddening, but something we felt necessary and partially out of a show of respect and loyalty to Wes.

Thanks for all the memories and good times.

Here's another reason why I'm sad to see Wes go from PDABuzz:

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/wes.gif

See that number of posts? That says "I'm involved with my community", and to me, no greater level of respect can be given to people that the time he spent posting and responding to things. Way to go Wes! :D

Dave Conger
07-04-2002, 07:22 AM
And it isn't just the number of posts. Wes always put an effort into anything that happened on that site. Remember the Pocket PC 2002 release. There were SO MANY pages of content. I remember one of my friends from college leaving me a message saying to go over there because the coverage was great. Buzz has always been one of my favorite sites to check for new and content, but it won't be the same without the great Senior Editor Wes. Thanks for everything Wes, hope to see you over here.

I thought of a great software/web program that users can use to subscribe to web boycotts. The software would go beyond petitions in that it would actually prevent the user from acessing a site without extra efforts.

Groups of like minded individuals could subscribe to a group boycott plan so they need not keep up with individual site boycotts.

PDABuzz won't live, at least as what we loved it as. Wes, and the mods, made PDABuzz the place to be. HMG were fools, plain and simple. Didn't they know this would happen? They'll lose a fair chunk of their reputation for this. I registered here a few days ago(or was it a few weeks? I lose track of time over the summer), and it looks like I'll be here a bit more, but its going to be harder finding a Palm site(as I really don't like PalmInfoCenter for discussions). But enough of what I'm going to do, I just thank you Wes, you made the best PDA site I've been to. And I thank the mods that were there; they went above and beyond the call of duty, each and every one of them.

Like I also posted over at "that other site" : Thoughts may not be the most.. unbiased site around [let's face it] But for now, it sure seems like a better place to hang out then PDAbuzz. At least untill it's clear what these fools are up to.

I think it's pretty obvious a fair amount of PDAbuzz users will be migrating to other sites; some here, some elsewhere. But I for one would like to extend a hand & friendship to all our PDA loving brethren. PPC or otherwise. United in a common disgust we stand.

I'm not that frequent a visitor over at PDABuzz, and I haven't yet met Wes (maybe one of these days in my travels...), but I've always had the utmost respect for PDABuzz as a place where you could receive balanced reporting (and messages from EdBot, errr... EdH, stirring the pot  ). I received the weekly report of the news every Monday, and read through it - always finding good stuff. With Wes gone... I think the heart and soul of PDABuzz is gone. It isn't like he had time to groom someone else for the job and then say "So long folks... I'm off to pursue different adventures, but I'll still be around!"... they just tore into the chest of PDABuzz, ripped out the heart, and left a gaping hole right in the middle.

Wes: best of luck in the future, and I certainly hope to see you at some point in the future! Keep your head up, and be proud of what you accomplished. Heck, build another PDA site and people will follow.

But sadly, it isn't.

Don't get me wrong, I love this place. I've been coming to the site itself since the first day (it was pretty crappy looking back then :)) but in the end what made PDABuzz so special was that it was platform agnostic which PocketPcThoughts is not and was never intended to be (hence the "Palm users stop sending me spam" note at the top of the page now!).

Don't get me wrong, I'll still visit PocketPcThoughts and probably post alot more now (pocketpcthoughts and pdabuzz were the only PDA Sites I visited more than once a day up untill now but pdabuzz was pretty much my exclusive posting home) but I will very much miss the cross-community interaction.

What a crock!!! I just read this news item at the Buzz again. Sounds sooooooo nice but apparently it was just a smokescreen.

PDABuzz.com to be acquired yet again!
Posted by Wes on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 10:00 AM PST

Long time PDABuzz.com users may recall that back in August of 1999, close to one year after this site was launched, we were acquired by CompanionLink Software, Inc. It was this acquisition that not only kept the "lights on" around here so to speak, but allowed PDABuzz.com to grow at a record pace. Today CompanionLink Software and Handheld Media Group (HHMG) announced that this site will be changing hands yet again, with HHMG acquiring PDABuzz.com as their first step to broadening their mobile computing coverage beyond the PalmOS market. Along with HHMG comes a number of great opportunities for PDABuzz.com to expand and enhance the already great array of content we currently offer.

As the person who built PDABuzz.com from the ground up, I can assure you that I debated long and hard about this acquisition, wondering if the philosophy and direction in which Handheld Media Group intended would match my goals and aspirations for this site. I can say that after a number of meetings with the key people at HHMG, I am confident that we are in fact on the same page and that PDABuzz.com will continue to develop into what I've always strived for, the best multi-platform mobile computing site available.

Of course, with any major change such as this will come questions and possibly concerns from our users. To help address these, I have listed below what in my opinion will be the two most common questions users will have about this announcement.

Question: Who will run the site now?
Answer: I will, just like always. I will continue to do what I've been doing here for years, writing, editing, discussing, and yes even arguing on occasion. :)

Question: How will the current industry coverage change?
Answer: It won't. Currently we cover all aspects of mobile computing including PalmOS, Pocket PC, Windows CE, Symbian/EPOC, Wireless, Smartphones and anything mobile that isn't a laptop. This coverage will continue and will only get better with this acquisition.
And of course, if you have any other questions, suggestions, or concerns about announcement, please feel free to post them in our discussion thread for this news item or email me directly.

In closing, I would like to personally thank those at CompanionLink Software for the many years of support they have offered, without which PDABuzz.com would be only a memory. You guys have been great and I wish you only the best of luck in the future.

I guess I'm just posting this kind of stuff so that we can see what a crappy move this was by HHMG and we still have some notion of that when they wipe the forums over there.

Here's a quote by Denny Atkin of HHMG in the news item thread when HHMG first got the site in March; it's not the entire post:

Fear not. When I heard from the business office that we were in talks with PDABuzz, I was totally jazzed. Wes does a superb job here, and it's one of a very few sites I was already hitting daily. I'm extremely excited that we're going to be able to work together on future projects. The last thing we'd want to do is change a thing here. I'm just glad to have someone of Wes' expertise as part of the group. (And you should know Wes better than to think he'd put up with us barging in and screwing up his site!)

Okay, this was longwinded. Blame it on posting late at night after a long week. To sum up:
1) Denny likes Pocket PCs. He likes Palms. He's anxious to play with the new Linux Zaurus. Variety is good. So stop picking on him, or he'll continue to refer to himself in third person.
2) PDABuzz rocks. Nobody wants to screw that up. Wes will still be running the show, and the biggest change is that he'll have access to our writing staff for future projects.

God only know if the goodbye thread at pdabuzz will survive the weekend so I will repost here as well....

Shameless post. There's always pocketpcpassion.com 's discussion boards HEHE sorry....

Seriously though. Who gets rid of the creator of a site? This makes absolutely no sense. While they are at it why don't they post a letter on the main page calling all their users stupid morons. I mean that would have the same basic effect.

I bounce back and forth between moderating over at pocketpcpassion and here. I come here often because of the seemingly unbiased news and reviews that came out of this staff. I have yet to find ANY other site on the net that plays both sides (I think Brighthand is a tad too pro Palm IMHO.) like PDAbuzz does. Today is a sad day not for Pocket PC fans. Not for Palm fans. But for PDA fans in general.

Wes. Good luck in whatever endeavors you attempt in the future. This has to be a knock at you self confidence. (I can’t imagine a person on the planet that it wouldn't unnerve.) Just know that your talent and your skills will find a home somewhere and you will succeed just as well as you have in the past. Good luck

PS- pdabuzz has been blackballed by me. I'm done here. If a media conglomerate can treat a valuable resource like Wes like this god knows how they will treat the rest of the site. I think we can get ready for a major biasness to occur or the quality of the site will start to slip. In any case back to my forums on ppcpass..... damn.

...but in the end what made PDABuzz so special was that it was platform agnostic which PocketPcThoughts is not and was never intended to be ...

...but I will very much miss the cross-community interaction.

I feel the same way. I don't use PPC but love to read up on what's new in all of the platforms out there. I would hate to lose that.

Not sure if this will be the place everyone migrates too, but (no offense to this site) i hope it's not. Maybe a new general pda site will pop up? Will someone in the community step up to the call?
