View Full Version : Synchronizing (a la ActiveSync) directly to a Linux system

I saw an entry in Freshmeat today about an application for synchronizing a PocketPC Contacts database into KDE's address book (http://www.jardino.nildram.co.uk/). Since KDE mostly runs on *nix systems (I think there's a Win port, though), I was intrigued. When I got to the web site, I saw the following:

You will need to get the synce project stuff working on your machine first.

The link was to a SourceForge page (http://sourceforge.net/projects/synce). The SynCE project describes itself as:

SynCE : Synchronize windows CE ! This is a clean room implementation of the RAPI protocol, plus a set of tools to synchronize some services of a Windows CE device ( mail, contacts, etc...) with a computer, like ActiveSync does.

This is the first time that I've seen this capability actually implemented for Linux. I'm kind of anxious to try this out, but I need to wait until I get home tonight (I have a three day weekend coming up, so I'll have some time!).

The reason that I think this is very interesting is that, with source code available, there's an opportunity to do ActiveSync right! (Remember Jason's recent rant about ActiveSync and two computers not working the way he wanted? Here's a possible solution!) It would be funny if Linux could get the Home/Office synchronization right, making Microsoft's ActiveSync look bad in comparison... if anything, it might get the Microsoft engineers on the ball and add the missing capabilities!

Has anybody else used SynCE driver (USB) or the address book synchronizing utilities? Any first impressions?

Hi,

seeing that this post is almost two weeks old, what is your conclusion ? Is it any good ?

Cheers,
