With a 400 mhz Xscale processor, integrated Bluetooth, and dual slots, this device looks like a serious contender. It's everything that some of you wanted the e310 to be! At $599, it's got a decent price tag, and Amazon is offering free shipping. This is an affiliate link, so all orders help to support this site.

• Lightweight, thin Pocket PC with 64 MB RAM and 32 MB ROM and blazing fast 400 MHz Xscale processor
• Dual expansion capabilities: built-in CompactFlash and Secure Digital (SD) slots
• Integrated wireless Bluetooth and WLAN capabilities
• 240 x 320 pixel TFT LCD screen displays more than 64,000 colors

And before anyone gets excited, the "WLAN" they're talking about isn't Wifi - as far as I know, they're suggesting that Bluetooth with an access point will turn this into a WLAN device.

Is the integrated BT 'capabilities' as a result of sdio bt card or real integrated into device?

That's a good question the pic shows a Toshiba card (doesn't look like the BT)so maybe it's "integrated" like the microdrive was in their last model? Well I will be finding out soon enough! :D http://sprinklerhead.com/toshiba_e740_01.jpg

I just read a note on PDABuzz from a guy in Ireland who had his new bluetooth card hooked up to the site with a 33MZ Sony running an old technology Blazer browser. If that could do that, imagine what this new Toshiba at 400MZ with a real browser could do?

Or a Zaurus with a blue tooth card and Opera.

It is really coming together, this Tech New World. I think Toshiba is really onto something with the e310, e740, and 550G (is that the right name for the new Japanese model with the 4 inch screen?). Splendid products.

Can one expect a real 2 fold increase in speed (400 vs 206)? If so it would be definetely worth it!

@Jason

Why do you think, that the 740 will not have WiFi?
I'm not sure that Toshiba will use the bluetooth for LAN access. The 740 does not even have the LAN profile for bluetooth.

@ I.Bergman

No, you can not expect a real speed increase as long as the software is not rewritten for Xscale.
Tests with the FSC Loox show that you will hardly feel any speed increase.
Engineers from FSC told us, that for now you will get higher performance for games, video and some special apps only.

btw: the Loox does have a bluetooth LAN profile and much more ...

Does availability at Amazon lend any hope that the e740 will be at brick and mortar retailers (Best Buy, CompUSA etc.) ? I know this is the "enterprise" device.

Wow!

The fonts on that screenie entropy1980 posted are incredibly clear. I don't remember ClearType looking *that* clear on my old school iPaq. If that's a real screenie, I'm extremely impressed.

Wonder if it'll hit Aussie shores?

Bluetooth is integrated.

See it in person before you buy one. If it uses the same screen as the e310 -- and it might, since it seems to use pretty much the same casing -- then ClearType is horrible in real life. The e310 has the worst ClearType of any Pocket PC I've seen, worse than the iPaq by far. The top quarter of each letter is a distinct pale steel blue, and the bottom three quarters of each letter is a slate gray rather than black. The e310 may be great for folks transitioning from a Palm m515, but ebook wonks should give it a miss.

Don't trust screenshots.

If it's worse though we could probably see a fix like Compaq is releasing to fix the way the text is rendered....

I could be wrong, but I'm be shocked if Toshiba delivered a Pocket PC with both Bluetooth and 802.11b integrated for only $599 and only a 1100 mAh battery. I'll stand by my belief that this device is Bluetooth only - the days of having both Bluetooth and WIFI are not yet here...soon. :-)

Is that a I know something you don't soon or a it's in a press release somwhere soon? :D although in light of recent news I can't see HP suprising us with that advancement for a while till they weed out what they are doing....

I would have ordered one of these yesterday, *but* they didn't use the four inch screen on it. I don't understand. If they already have the form factor done for the 550 which has a 4-incher, and which is apparently out in Japan, why not use it for us too? Why make us stick with that tiny 3.5" screen? Is an integrated BT module that huge?

I hit reload on the Amazon page I opened this morning and the header has now changed. It no longer says Toshiba E740, but now says MaxTech PD922. The rest of the content of the page has remained mostly the same. They've crossed out the $599 price and put "Too low to display" next to it.

Here's a copy/paste:

Maxtech PD922

I checked Maxtech's website, and the nearest thing they display is the PD920 which is a Palm-sized PC, not a PocketPC.

By the way, I'm holding out on ordering until I find an Xscale PocketPC that has all the expected features as well as CF & SD (SDIO compatible) and built-in Bluetooth or WiFi AND control pad diagonals. Wake me up when it is available - I've got the money set aside just waiting for the right model to come along.

Hmm... so for those that ordered it earlier. That may not have ordered what they think they ordered. :? Who knows... maybe another one of those "up for a few hours and then quickly taken down because they didn't mean to put them up in the first place" deals? All I can say is 'wierd'.

They took the link out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, the link is gone and a search of the site for the Toshiba e740 comes back with nothing. Hmmm, guess someone complained about the old bait and switch. So what happens to all the people who ordered it yesterday? Did they get a"MaxtechPPC", a Toshiba, or a Refund? Any of you guys that ordered hear anything yet? They did this to me with the HP 56x Battery W/MMC, shipped me the AC adapter. They changed the link after I ordered it, even the packing slip said Battery w/MMC, but in the box was an AC Adapter. Anyway, it would be interesting to know what happened here if anyone out there knows. I was seriously considering ordering it and then it was gone :(

Odds are they'll get the right product - Amazon has done this before with Pocket PCs...

After I placed my order with Amazon Thursday evening, I promptly received a confirming e-mail with the correct product description. Yet, when I logged into my Amazon account just now, the order detail provided the following description:

1 of: Toshiba e740 Pocket PC [Electronics]
MaxTech
$599.99

Obviously, the appearance of the word "MaxTech" does not inspire confidence. So I've sent an e-mail to Amazon's customer service department requesting an explanation and a detailed description of the item they intend to ship to me. I'll post their response on this board when I recieve it.

I am now very skeptical that Amazon's offer (and my order) was valid; but I've got my fingers crossed. :?

And thank you Jason for pointing out my misconception about the integrated WiFi. If this Amazon order turns out to be valid, I'll be sure to have a CF WiFi card in my possesion when the e740 arrives.

More to come as this drama unfolds.

Bob

Thanks for the post. This is good news! :D Now, lets hope they ship in two weeks as promised.

Sorry to detour from the thread, but can anyone recommend a CF WiFi (802.11b) card that they've had very good experience with. I'm aware of several, but they vary widely in price. Toshiba's online store sells an Intel model for $179. D-Link offers one for $99.00. Thats a large difference in price.

The Symbol or Socket cards are simply awesome - nice and small. The D-Link card is just too honkin' big (I have both).

I seem to get better range from my d-link than from my socket I think the "honking bigness" aids in the distance but then again it could be me...although the form factor of the socket is amazing.

What about the new SMC card? Anyone used it? They claim to have a range of almost twice the D-link or Symbol cards.
