More Pocket PC and Smartphone 2002 news! I just got this from Beth Goza, Microsoft:<br /><br />"Microsoft believes that software is a key enabler of what can become a thriving wireless ecosystem - one that benefits all who participate from carriers, device manufacturers, and developers to mobile professionals and the organizations they work for. To that end, Microsoft is demonstrating significant progress and industry support with the following announcements at GSM:<br /><br /><b>Microsoft Announces the Pocket PC Phone Edition</b> software, the platform which enables device manufactures to combine the best of the PDA with integrated wireless technology for both voice and data communications - a great PDA and a great mobile phone. Microsoft is showcasing devices from O2 and HP -- HP will announce the Jornada 928 WDA based on our Pocket PC Phone Edition software.<br /><br /><b>Microsoft and Texas Instruments are introducing a reference design for building Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 devices powered by TI's integrated chipset</b> and will be demonstrating prototype hardware at the show. This high quality, ready-made solution enables OEMs or carriers to quickly enter the market with a Smartphone device. In support of this news, Compal announced their immediate intent to build and bring to market handsets based on this reference design.<br /><br /><b>Microsoft and Intel form Mobile Alliance.</b> Microsoft and Intel are working on next genereration reference designs for both Pocket PC and Smartphones that will benefit device manufacturers (quicker time to market w/ high-quality, smart devices) carriers (more choice, lower costs, ability to build new revenue streams around wireless data), and mobile professionals (smart devices, lower costs, more choice)"

Aren't MS testing their "next generation" PPC OS right now?

Now we have Windows XP (*4), Windows.net Server (*4), Windows CE.net, PPC.net (beta), Handheld PC 2k (dead?), PPC 2k2 Phone Edition and Smartphone. I'm sure I've left some out, it's kind of getting ridiculous. I'm getting the impression that the new marketing slogan will be something like "Windows everywhere", of course they'll just be admitting their actual permanent strategy if it is...

I'm not aware of that. The next version is still around a pretty big corner.

What did you think they were doing? Of course it was the intention to bring the Windows programming model and great connectivity to as many devices as possible.

First of all, "Windows everywhere" is a good slogan, maybe they will steal, I mean aquire it from you.

Next I will stay on my pet gripe, still no mention of CDMA smart phones. ANd I think smartphones darn well better have Bluetooth built in.

I don't know if anyone watches The Simpsons (I'm sure someone here does), but I'm just picturing the episode where Homer starts his own Internet company and Bill Gates comes around and "Aquires" it... Very funny. :)

I'm with you on both counts:
What do we want: 1xRTT!
When do we want it: Now!
What do we want: Bluetooth enabled smartphones
when do we want it: Now!

Not a war cry that rolls off the tonge (I can't spell: it must be 2 in the morning again! (and sure enough)) really is it... :)

Thanks I forgot that one.

You forgot the "...and we all lived happily ever after..." bit. ;)

The only problem with it is that there are probably shots of "RTCW" (Return To Castle Wolfenstein) running on a Smartphone somewhere...

If it is true, it would have some serious show off value! :D

ps. the pocket pc site with a funny name! that's a cool angle, don't let Microsoft see it...

... As are the other dull and boring Nokia games (and yes, there's a card game for the older users to play as well);

(ok, I confess, the Snowblarding and the Soccer aren't actually released yet :-()

Of course, I had to go hunting for these screenshots because I don't play games :wink: , It just proves my point, Micro$oft not only locks users into M$ technology, but also into M$ thinking. As my signature says.....

Doesn't matter much if they are a fake, I played with a smartphone, and from the specs i've seen looks like doom will be very possible....as far as anything else goes micorsoft will have a niche...the 500lb gorilla in a different cage is still a 500lb gorilla it may not own the market but it will own a piece of it that you can't deny...come on even audiovox has market share with their phones (albiet their insides are usually qualcomm) btw is the 9210 even widely available? The one version won't be out for a little while still and i bet it will be an arm and a leg( although PPC aren't cheap eiher!)

What are you talking about? Don't you know that Nokia 9210 is available in Europe already about 1 year and since 2 months Nokia 9290 (the same but American standard) is also availble in USA. Just go to http://www.nokiausa.com and buy it!

And these screenshots are not a fakes. I am not a gaming fun, so they are not impressing ME, but having 640x200 resolution and full Qwerty keyboard (forget stylus? who needs it then?) is quite useful also for PRODUCTIVITY applications.

Anyway: please visit web site of my close friend at
http://My-Communicator.com in case you are interested in these phones - he has there gazzilions of software for these phones for immediate download...

This said, I am going to bed to sleep, because here, in Europe, night is deep already...

I saw one today, they are in the states but not yet ready for use and a ways away from sale. Nokia is apparently going to be giving them to their employees as their Work Mobile Phones. Not everyone, but if you carry a phone, looks as though they will carry the communicator. The screen is damn good, no doubt about it and it isn't too bulky. It is still a sizable phone.

I hear the price will be between 800 and $1000, so don't expect it to selll more than a few thousand units in the states. That is well above the price point americans will pay for phones. I believe the magic number is $299, those phones costing more don't do very well at all.

I am no fan of Nokia, but that phone is pretty cool.

Wakey! Wakey! While you're a waitin', I'm a playin'.

Ok dude, you're totally obsessed with your 9210 aren't you. Do you have Hexen, Quake, SimCity 2000 or Quake II on that thing yet? They're just butt ugly, have been since the 9110. You won't catch me with one of those, the form factor is just not right in my opinion.

Ok dude, you're totally obsessed with your 9210 aren't you.

:wink: And your point is?

Anyway, not to the point where I can't see any faults in it. Neither do I claim that Nokia has saved the world or that the 9210 has invented the concept of speech.

:D I'm sure that if we met on a site dedicated to, say, the merits of Diesel and/or Petrol (gas), neither Nokia nor Micro$oft would be mentioned.

Actually, I do feel bad about my posts (honest) and I know I've ranted (sorry), but I get wound up when I'm told that something is so obviously not up to standard simply because it's not made by the company that makes everything else. It affects my sense of fairness. Sorry old chap (dude).

My point is not that Microsoft products are pants, just that they're not the only viable option. I get upset when I'm told they are - it kinda suggests I'm stupid for not choosing a Micro$oft product.

And by the way, I would never suggest that Nokia or Palm are technological saints and yes, there are bugs in non Microsoft products.

Oh, nothing, just, you know, that ranting about Doom on your 9210 doesn't really cut the mustard with regards to "out there" gaming.

Don't be, I found it quite funny (not in a nasty way). It effects my sence of fairness too. No problem old bean. ;)

I think it's called MS Time 2056. ;)

I heard/saw something saying that they were already testing their "Next Gen" Pocket PC OS. It can't take that long, not with MS Time 12BC Beta...

It's cool no harm no foul :P now after all that .... friends still? Hehehe in all truth I have a Nokia phone and love it but I still think there is plenty of room for MS in the phone market and it will eventually boil down to what features people deem important....

Actually I heard that Bill has decided to invest in major shares of Texaco. I guess he wants to make sure that cars have gas to go so that people can buy MS products. Also good cars can have Microsoft embeded car computers.

What's a troll?

Is this a reference to my days as Ferdinand? I hope I haven't put anything on here to offend you again! If you have a problem with anything I've said, you're free to e-mail me (I believe my main e-mail address is available in my profile).

But you can't really blame a bloke for being upset when he reads things like this -> http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2002feb/bpd20020219010320.htm

And this -> http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/7/24134.html

And this -> http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/ms_tuncom/major/mtc-00030613.htm (I know it's Palm that's saying all this, but if Palm are lying, they can be sued off the planet for so many things including contempt of court).

And I quote Bill Gates:

"We really need to demonstrate to people like Nokia why our PDA will connect to Office in a better way than other PDAs even if that means changing how we do flexible schema in Outlook and how we tie some of our audio and video advanced work to only run on our PDAs." - Sorry if it offends, but I like to think outside the box, unlike the person who keeps writing equally abbrasive comments like;

All mobile operators and handset makers; pay close attention now! The real mobile Internet is coming to a device near you - very soon, users are taking control over their devices! Instant messaging, backgrounds and ringing tones can no longer drive any multi-million dollar business plans. Want to make money in this market? Here's what you need to do: Innovate!

I'm sure that I'd read some interesting comments if I could influence people with the statement; "BeOS was the first (and probably still is the only) stable and useable OS that has ever graced a hard drive." This is patently not true, but such sentiments are being made here regarding Micro$oft technology.

Does joining a debate make me a troll? Does trying to see the benefits, while being able to see the drawbacks, in all technology make me a troll? Then I'm a troll old chap!

I've apologised for my attitude, not my inclusive views.

:) You're on the right track since it <U>is</U> a Celtic tongue. It's Welsh (though I must admit that someone with more Welsh literary skill would probably point out that my mutations are all to pot :cry: ).

It says (to people in general, not to anybody in particular :) );

The world is BIG

Not such a profound statement I suppose, but in my part of Wales, most people are born in one valley and die in the next! :lol:
