View Full Version : Does your HP Jornada 565/568 have a dust problem?

I swear, if I like a certain model of Pocket PC, it ends up having a dust problem. Last time it was my famously dusty iPAQ (so dusty that I was accused of faking the photos). Now my HP 565 is getting too dusty for my liking. How about your Jornada 56x Pocket PC? How much dust do you have in it? Cast your vote!

What I don't get is why isn't HP being more forthcoming with this? They know Compaq was having the same problems, so they know that consumers are aware of this.

Are they trying to reduce repair/RMA's?

I've had my 567 since November, and it has a couple pieces of dust in the display. I exchanged my unit three times before getting one that didn't develop into a total snowstorm within a week.

It's just frustrating that the company seems to refuse to acknowledge or fix the problem. Too busy with the upcomming merge proxy fight I guess :)

Hehe. Obviously, the dust problem isn't restricted to Pocket PCs only -

The only real answer in my opinion is -

One dust spec is one too many

Had to vote no dust on this 568. Notice I said this. The other 4 that I had went back with blizzards. This one had been clean since 11/15/01, got it shipped to me in Vegas during Comdex, and haven't had any dust yet. 2 + months and no snow yet. :D

Had mine for about 3+ months now. Not a a single sign of dust anywhere. Guess I'm lucky. For the rest of you, I hope PPC manufacturers start sealing all screens :!:

New out of the box my 568 had 1 speck of dust. Now after 3 weeks, 3 specks of dust!

I'm dust free for now, but I've only had mine for a week. I never had a problem with dust on my iPAQ, and I'm hoping that my luck holds.

Sent my original 567 from Dell back the next day b/c it had 3 glowing moon rocks in it when I took it brand new out of the box.

Got a replacement 2 days later. It developed dust a month later...4 big specs. Sent it back to HP.

Got a replacement three days later. 4 specs in the bottom left hand corner, one big one at the edge of the screen on the middle right side.

SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I returned two units, one to HP and one to Dell, before getting one that is dust free and has been for 2 months. It is a refurbished unit, that is as good as new. My experience tells me never use compressed air to blow the dust off the screen. Just wipe it gently with a lint free cloth.

After my first swap out, I waited until the forums started saying that they had the dust problem solved. My 3rd unit came in early January and has been dust free for about a month. Hopefully that won't change.

Can you use larger fonts please. I can't see the topic of this discussion because my HP 565 is full of dust and it is very hard to see what's written on the screen.

Returned it for another... so far, so good after a week.... but it took 2 months for the original to build up enough dust to make it annoying.

:D

No dust... It took me 3 units to be able to make this statement though. I think they have a handle on it now although I think it took a while to drift down. It seems that the topic is settling down and I hear fewer people complaining that their replacements have dust also. We can only hope!

HP Canada told me a while back that anything after week 49 would be dust free... there have been some reported cases since but I think it has slowed down significantly.

Hi all:

I had a similar type problem with an old IPAQ and now that I'm PDAless I am investigating in making a new purchase. Any recommendations? I'm afraid to try something different than the IPAQ but I've heard so many good things about all the other new units. Please help me....

Thanks,
Anthony

Part of the problem may be that HP doesn't actually make the Jornada. All PDA production is outsourced to overseas OEMs. Mainly Taiwan based firms. How HP deals with this problem depends on how good the lines of communication are between the company and the contract firms they hire.

Personally, I wouldn't tolerate so much as one spec of dust in my PDA. The only PocketPC I "trust" right now is the iPaq 38xx series, only because it has a sealed LCD.

Not only do I have dust, but I also have a dust mite that crawls around the screen every so often!
Fortunately I work next door to the HP service centre, so I can drop mine in for replacement any time.

Just received my third unit today. It arrived clean but so did my original and the last replacement. We'll see.

20xxx = no dust, as far as I can tell, and if such a thing is possible.

It took me 5 tries to get it done, and untold haggling with HP. Now, I am extremely happy with the unit!

I considered to purchase a HP unit because it looks so cool. However, I am afraid of the dust issues. So, I bought a Casio E-200 instead. I have much more confidence in Casio because I am also an owner of a E-115.

I have more dust than I would like ... and it's getting worse. I am awaiting my first (and hopefully LAST) replacement from HP. At least their support was quick and painless. I'll see on Monday....

This is my fifth 568. I love it, but the dust issue is terrible. This is my fifth one already. This time, there is a HUGE particle of dust. It really looks like a part of a dried leaf.

As far as hp's response that it is purely cosmetic...I paid $600 for this thing! I don't want a single fleck of anything in the screen...

I bought the 568 because the 548 was sturdy, reliable, but a little slow. hp is sort of dropping the ball...

In all fairness, they have been quite cooperable with the exchange policy.

No dust, and I've had it a month and a half now. I do have one dead pixel, though.
