Zune Thoughts community member randalllewis posted an interesting comment in our forums that I thought was worth sharing:

"Here is a little secret about the new firmware upgrade- it can't be installed if your Zune is nearly full. I have two 8GB Zunes. After plugging in, my Zune with less than a 1GB of space just sat there and did not download the new firmware When I tried to force it to do so, I received the message that no update was available. Plugging in my Zune with about half of its memory available, the update downloaded and installed without issue. I think a warning about this issue would be appropriate somewhere on the Zune software."

So if you have a Zune that won't accept the firmware upgrade, try freeing up some space. Or, as I've had to do twice now with my Zune 80, disconnect it, reboot it, then re-connect it.
