The survey covering the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain found that the French lead Europe in terms of online television consumption with 59% of people choosing to watch previews and episodes of their favorite shows via the web with the Germans trailing at 33%. The survey did not ask where the respondents obtained the content, ignoring the reality that many were possibly downloading television shows from BitTorrent or similar services."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/motorola.jpg" /> <br /><br />Um...right. All I have to say is: Puff, puff, pass. Don't bogart the spliff Motorola.

mm, its possible. It says they watch some tv online.. they dont watch all their tv online. I know a few non techie people who watch prime time shows like CSI on the internet cause its air times conflict with their scehdual. Others like me and some friends watch mostly downloaded stuff. I generaly watch nothing but anime, but I do keep up with the new doctor who, and mythbusters. :)

I think that number is very plausible. I watch the news online when I happen to miss them (legally) and now small Finnish broadcasters are focusing on the net ever so more. Finnish MTV3 (not the I-want-my-MTV...) are broadcasting Formula 1 races live on the net (for a fee), and Finnish national broadcasting company -- YLE -- has started their old shows from the archive on the net as well (free).

I am also using the unofficial distributions chains to keep tabs on my favorite shows that no-one is broadcasting here anymore: Stargate SG-1 as well as Stargate Atlantis. I'm sure to keep buying those DVDs because the studios do have to get their money from something.
What makes is a bit worse, is that I know that I'm not the only one doing this: lots of people I know are doing it. So, I believe the 45% number can be quite close to the truth. (But it does sound a bit salted by Moto. :) )

Those numbers are BS. How do I know?

Broadband penetration is only 14.1% in the EU. There's no way 45% of households watch TV over the internet in the EU. It's not physically possible.

The title of the survey is misleading (yeah, I'm stating the obvious here ;) ). The EU does not equal Europe which does not equal United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain which were only countries surveyed. Seems like Moto does not know the difference or has done an oversimplification for those who do not know their geography. The UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain might be part of the EU (and Europe) and the largest amount of populations of the EU, but that doesn't mean the countries are "Europe" and can adequately reflect the situation in every European country.

Also, the article mentions:
45% of European broadband users
which does not mean 45% of European households. :)
