The project I'm working on continues: first it was the Intel CPU (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=11879), then it was the Kingston RAM (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=11926), and now it's time for storage: Western Digital sent me three drives for the machine I'm building. First, we have a single Raptor drive (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=189&language=en) (150 GB of storage, 10,000 RPM), and two WD RE2's (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=238) each offering 500 GB worth of storage at 7200 RPM. The RE2 is an enterprise-class drive offering a three-year warranty and 1.2 million hours MTBF (mean time between failure). Lots of fast storage, and meant to run for a long time without failure. What am I building? I'm almost done collecting the parts, so the mystery will be revealed soon enough... ;-)

I just built a media and backup server. Consists of a Celeron D, 512MB RAM, and four 400GB SATA drives. Two of the drives are setup in RAID1 which is for backups and other important stuff. 1.2TB with 400GB mirrored ;)

Going to post about it on gear diary in a few days. After its received some testing.

Nice! The system I'm building is going to be designed to be a little more...active...when it comes to media manipulation. 8)

Haha fair enough. At this point all I wanted was a storage server with some mirrored backup. I thought about 800GB mirrored but it just took too much space. 800GB normal and 400GB raided seemed like a good compromise :)

I have my desktop and MacBook Pro for heavylifting. Gotta love Core 2 Duo!!

Ah, come on Jason! That's still weak! Where's your "A" game? Back around the begining of the year, I upgraded my "uber" box with about 2.2GB of storage. (4 - 750GB drives, RAID5) Unfortunately, I do have a good hunk of that filled up now too.
