http://www.nikon.ca/products/d40x/

In the never-ending game of one-upmanship, Nikon has released the D40x - sadly, the press release below doesn't give useful information such as exactly how the D40 and the D40x are different, and since I don't know all the D40 specs off the top of my head, I can't say for sure what the D40x adds for the extra $200 USD MSRP it is over the D40. Don't you just love marketing? At any rate, with an MSRP of $999 CAD and $799 USD, this looks like a great entry-level DSLR.

[high-resolution image also available]

Mississauga, ON, March 6, 2007 - Nikon Canada Inc. today introduced the Nikon D40x Digital SLR, the sister camera to Nikon D40. The D40x offers many advanced digital technologies found in Nikon’s professional digital SLR (D SLR) models, but is incredibly easy to use and affordable, making it ideal for first-time D SLR buyers.

Loaded with Nikon’s exclusive 3D Colour Matrix Metering II, an improved image processing engine, and superb Auto White Balance, the D40x is equipped to produce truly high-quality images. When combined with world-famous Nikkor lenses, these features help to ensure perfect exposure, refined details and natural, vivid colours. The camera’s 10.2-megapixel CCD image sensor makes it easy to produce large prints or perform extensive cropping without losing fine detail.

The D40x offers a near-instant power-up time of 0.18 seconds, as well as a continuous shooting mode that makes it possible to capture up to 100 JPEG images at speeds up to 3 frames per second. The camera’s razor-sharp autofocus ensures crisp images in a wide variety of shooting situations. Photographers will also benefit from D40x’s incredible battery power of up to 520 images** per charge, and wide ISO sensitivity of 100 to 1600, plus HI-1.<!>

Nikon’s market-leading i-TTL flash control simplifies flash photography, automatically evaluating ideal flash exposure in any lighting situation. The camera’s rotating mode dial gives users access to Eight Digital Vari-Program modes, offering creative shooting options, optimized for common shooting situations. For further control over aperture and shutter speed, P/S/A/M modes are also available.

The D40x’s retouch menu offers exclusive Nikon in-camera image editing features, such as D-lighting, which rescues underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight by creating a copy of the image and adding light and detail where necessary, while leaving properly exposed areas alone. Photographers can also easily correct red-eye, or apply Monochrome effects to convert an image to Black-and-White, Sepia Tone or Cyanotype.

The D40x and its sister model, the D40, are Nikon’s smallest and most compact D SLR cameras, each offering the same ergonomic design and streamlined interface for intuitive operation. The bright viewfinder eases composition, while the 2.5-inch large LCD monitor, with wide viewing angle, makes for easy menu navigation and image viewing.
Entry-level users will appreciate the built-in Help menu, providing access to key camera features at the touch of a button.

Major Features

Intuitive and reliable operation
* The most compact Nikon digital SLR offering 10.2-megapixel CCD, featuring simple controls and ergonomics
* Large 2.5-inch LCD monitor with easy-to-view menus, large fonts and stylish colour schemes
* Bright and clear viewfinder with 0.8x magnification for precise composition
* Long-life rechargeable lithium-ion battery allows up to 520 images* on a single charge**
* In-camera sample images
help photographers select the right camera settings
* Optional Wireless Remote Control ML-L3 for easy remote shutter release

Superior image quality and resolution
* 10.2-effective-megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD imaging sensor, producing 3,872 x 2,592-pixel images
* High-precision digital image processing algorithms for natural-looking pictures with faithful colour and tone reproduction
* Nikon’s 3D Colour Matrix Metering II for ideal exposures in almost any lighting condition
* Variable Centre-weighted Metering and Spot Metering centred on the active focus area
* Auto White Balance for natural colours, plus six different manual white balance settings and user-defined preset white balance

Fast and precise responses
* Quick 0.18-sec. power-up lets photographers respond to every photographic opportunity
* Fast continuous shooting mode enables up to 100 JPEG images (FINE L-size or smaller) at 3 frames* per second
* Advanced three-area AF system and refined algorithms for fast, efficient and precise autofocus
* Versatile shutter speed control ranging from 30s to 1/4000s, plus
bulb*

Accurate automated and manual controls for predictable results
* Eight Digital Vari-Programs adjust camera settings automatically for scene-specific pictures. The D40 was a 6.1 megapixel camera, so the upgrade to the 10.1 megapixel is significant. From other sites I've read, the D40x also has an increased ISO range and a few other upgrades.

Given that the D50 seems to be on it's way out (Circuit City no longer carries it), it seems the D40x might be replacing that model?

Edit: It seems after checking, the D50 was also a 6.1 megapixel model. So the D40x is an upgrade to that as well.

it adds megapixels. going from 6 (d40) to 10 (d40x), it can do 3.0 fps and can go to 100 ISO at the lowest in stead of 200. That's about it.

Thanks for the info guys. Seems strange to me that they'd not just update the D50 line...
