http://www.planetneil.com/faq/flash-techniques.html

"As photographers we're always looking for perfect light. And yet, the quality of available light isn't always ideal. It is rarely perfect. But I feel that in using flash wisely, I'm able to enhance or over-ride the available light. With careful use of flash, I am more in control of light, and hence the way my photos will look - than if I had just accepted the existing ambient light. Instead of waiting for perfect light, I use what I have ...
and add flash to make the best of the situation... I'm a heavy user of flash - most of my photos have flash one way or another. But I try and hide that fact. I nearly always have an on-camera flash, but I try to diffuse it or bounce it wherever possible. "

I just bookmarked this article for perpetual future reference. Fantastic! The author talks about the right way of using on-camera flash in almost all scenarios when people take photographs with people in them. He demonstrates the techniques on wedding photos which is ideal because wedding photos really do need to be perfect. But best of all, for all the various photographs and scenarios, the author provides the flash and ISO settings that go with it. Very cool, and it should be required reading.

Interesting stuff, although when I first saw the headline I thought it was about "built-in" flash. After reading through though it's clearly about using an external flash that's attached to the camera's hot shoe. Good techniques though, I try and use the flash to bounce off stuff whenever I can.
